All her life, Elena Reed has been mocked as the wolfless orphan of the Black Moon Pack. At her coming-of-age ceremony, she finally feels the Mate Bond—with Damon Black, the future Alpha and the man she has loved for years.

But Damon rejects her before the entire pack, choosing a political alliance over a wolfless mate.

When Elena is framed for stealing the pack’s sacred relic, Damon sees the cracks in the accusation—and remains silent. Exiled and hunted by rogues, Elena is left to die beyond the pack borders.

She should have vanished without a trace.

Instead, she is rescued by Kael Draven, the feared King of Lycans. Beneath Elena’s damaged bond and suppressed scent, Kael’s wolf senses royal blood the world believed extinct.

As a strange power awakens inside her, Elena must uncover the truth about her missing wolf, her broken bond, and the inheritance hidden from her since childhood. Meanwhile, Damon discovers the betrayal he allowed and comes searching for the woman he cast away—while a powerful enemy at the royal court will do anything to bury Elena’s identity forever.

She was rejected as a wolfless nobody.

But when she returns, she will no longer be waiting for an Alpha, a king, or fate itself to choose her.

This time, Elena will choose for herself.

Chapter 1:Mate
By the time Alpha Marcus called my name, every other twenty-year-old in the courtyard had heard their wolf. I was the last one standing outside the ring of white stones. Moonlight washed the packhouse courtyard in silver. Families crowded the benches, wrapping arms around sons and daughters who had staggered out of the circle laughing, crying, or shaking from the first voice inside their heads. The air was thick with pride, sweat, and the wild new scents of awakened wolves. No one waited for me. I pressed my cold fingers against the skirt Mara had made before she died. The dark green fabric was a little too short now, but it was the only thing I owned that still felt like a mother's hand resting between my shoulder blades. You can do this, I told myself. For years, I had watched younger pack members shift while I remained painfully human. Tonight was my final chance to prove the whispers wrong. If a wolf answered me under the full moon, the pack would have to stop calling me broken. Maybe I would finally stop believing them. "Elena Reed." Alpha Marcus's voice carried across the courtyard. "Step forward." I lifted my chin and walked. The whispers started before I reached the stones. "Why is she even here?" "Maybe the moon likes lost causes." A few people laughed. I kept my gaze on the center of the circle. Then I made the mistake of looking to Alpha Marcus's right. Damon stood beside his father, broad-shouldered and still in a black ceremonial shirt. He was not smiling with the others. Firelight caught the hard line of his jaw and the dark hair falling over his brow. His attention rested on me with an intensity that made the rest of the courtyard blur. He had watched me that way for years, always from a distance, always when he thought I would not notice. I had built too many foolish hopes from those stolen looks. Damon was the future Alpha. I was the pack's wolfless orphan. Whatever lived in the silences between us had never been given a name. Tonight, I let myself imagine that could change. The moment I stepped into the circle, the stones chilled the soles of my shoes. A hush moved through the crowd. Alpha Marcus raised one hand. "Close your eyes." I obeyed. "Breathe. Let the moon find what belongs to you." I drew in cold air until my lungs hurt. At first, I heard only the crackle of the braziers and someone shifting on a wooden bench. I reached inward, searching for the presence everyone described: a second heartbeat, a voice, a creature pacing behind my ribs. There was nothing. I tried again. Please. I searched every quiet place inside myself. I thought of Rowan's steady hands teaching me to wrap a sprained wrist. I thought of Mara humming over jars of dried herbs. I thought of all the nights I had lain awake after they were gone, promising myself that if I could only awaken, I could earn a place here without them. Still nothing answered. The silence inside me seemed to widen until it swallowed the whole courtyard. "Do you hear her?" Alpha Marcus asked. My throat tightened. "No, Alpha." Disappointment passed over his face, quickly replaced by something worse—certainty. "Try once more." I shut my eyes harder. My nails cut into my palms. I begged without words, offering whatever part of me the moon wanted in exchange for one sign that I was not empty. A strange pressure gathered beneath my breastbone. For one hopeful second, I thought something had found me. Then the pressure vanished. No voice. No wolf. No shift. Someone near the front muttered, "Wolfless." This time, no one told them to be quiet. I opened my eyes. Alpha Marcus lowered his hand. "Enough," he said. The word struck more cleanly than the laughter. I looked past him to Damon. His expression had gone rigid. His fingers curled at his sides, but he did not step forward. He did not speak. Of course he didn't. I had wanted a wolf. I had wanted Mara to have been right when she said being late did not mean being lesser. Most of all, I had wanted Damon to look at me tonight and see someone who could stand beside him. Instead, he had just watched the pack confirm exactly what I was. I could have run. The open gate stood beyond the last row of benches, and the forest waited in the darkness. For one weak moment, I pictured myself fleeing before anyone could see my eyes burn. But they had taken enough from me while I stood silent. I would not give them the sight of me breaking too. I smoothed Mara's skirt, turned, and walked out of the circle with my back straight. The crowd parted without touching me. New wolves had been hugged and welcomed when they left the stones. People leaned away from me as if my emptiness might spread. I counted my steps. One. Two. Three. I was nearly past the benches when a scent cut through smoke, sweat, and damp earth. Cedar. Rain on stone. Something warm and dark, like the first breath from a fire after a long winter. I stopped so abruptly that the heel behind me clipped my shoe. The scent filled my lungs again. Heat unfolded under my skin. It did not feel like the pressure in the circle. This was sharper, certain, alive. Every nerve in my body turned toward it before my mind understood why. One word rose from somewhere deeper than thought. Mate. My heart slammed against my ribs. That was impossible. I had no wolf to recognize anyone. I had just failed in front of the entire pack. But the pull tightened, invisible and undeniable. I turned. The crowd moved in broken pieces around me. Faces blurred. Voices dulled. The scent led past the white stones, past Alpha Marcus, straight to the man standing at his side. Damon. He stared at me as if the ground had split open between us. His eyes flashed amber. The change lasted less than a second, but I saw it. Ronan was close to the surface. Damon's chest rose on a hard breath, and his hand closed around the edge of the wooden platform until his knuckles whitened. He felt it too. Joy hit me so fast it hurt. All those years of waiting, all the glances I had told myself meant nothing, all the times he had found a reason to be in the healer's cottage when I was there—it had not been foolish. The moon had not given me a wolf, but it had given me him. The future Alpha of the Black Moon Pack was my mate. Damon stepped down from the platform. My breath caught. The crowd noticed him moving and quieted in a spreading wave. He crossed the courtyard without looking at anyone else. I wanted to smile. I almost did. Then I saw his face. There was no wonder in it. No relief. The shock had drained away, leaving his features controlled and cold. His gaze swept over my plain dress, the empty circle behind me, and the pack members still watching. It felt like being judged all over again. He stopped an arm's length away. The new pull inside me urged me closer, but his body had gone so still that I did not dare move. "Damon," I whispered. His scent deepened, and something rough vibrated low in his chest. Ronan knew me. Whatever Damon wanted to hide, his wolf did not. I held on to that. "You feel it," I said. His jaw flexed. "Answer me." My voice trembled, but I kept it loud enough for him to hear. "Please." For a moment, the future Alpha disappeared. He was only Damon—the man who had known me before Mara died, before the word wolfless became the first thing anyone saw when they looked at me. His eyes softened. Then Alpha Marcus said his name. "Damon." It was not a question. Damon looked over his shoulder. His father's expression gave nothing away, but I saw the warning in the set of his mouth. Around him, the senior pack members watched with open unease. When Damon faced me again, the softness was gone. "I feel it," he said quietly. The words should have made me happy. Instead, cold crept over the warmth under my skin. "Then why are you looking at me like that?" His gaze flicked toward the people nearest us. They were pretending not to listen and failing badly. "Not here." "This happened here." I glanced at the circle. "In front of everyone." "They don't know what happened." "They will." "No." The word came too fast. The bond—or whatever new thing burned between us—pulled painfully tight. I searched his face. "No?" He stepped closer, using his body to block me from the crowd. To anyone else, it might have looked protective. I could feel the tension running through him. "Don't say the word," he murmured. My hope cracked at the edges. "Why?" He did not answer. His eyes moved once more to the empty awakening circle, and this time I understood. He had felt the same bond I had. He knew I belonged to him by every law the pack honored. And he was ashamed that the moon had chosen a wolfless woman. Damon caught my wrist. His grip was careful, but it was still a command. "Come with me, Elena." The courtyard had gone almost silent behind us. I looked down at his hand, then back at the man I had wanted for years. "Where?" His eyes met mine, hard with a decision he had already begun to make. "Somewhere private."
