ChapterOne
As Angel, now Lucia worked in the poultry farm, she kept her transistor radio beside her, listening to the soothing music as she went about her duties. Suddenly, an advertisement caught her attention. "Mr. Smith, a real estate billionaire in the city of Rome, is in need of a female housekeeper in his luxurious mansion," the announcer said. Lucia's heart skipped a beat. "Could it possibly be the same Mr. Smith who rejected me seven years ago?" She wondered. She shook her head, trying to push the thought away. But something inside her told her that she needed to pursue this opportunity. Gathering her courage, she made her way to the telephone booth nearby and dialed the number provided in the advertisement. After a moment of ringing, a deep voice answered on the other end. "Hello, this is Mr. Smith's residence. How may I help you?" the voice said. "Um, yes. I'm calling about the housekeeping position. Is it still available?" Lucia asked nervously. . "Yes, it is. Are you interested in applying?" Mr. Smith responded, his voice still carrying that gentle tone she remembered so well. Lucia hesitated for a moment before responding, "Yes, I am. I am looking for a job at the moment and I thought this might be a good opportunity." There was a pause on the other end, and then the voice replied, "Very well. Please come in for an interview tomorrow at 10 AM. The address is 123 Via Veneto, Rome." The thought of facing Mr. Smith again made Lucial's palms sweat. She knew that her appearance might have changed since they last saw each other, but how could she be sure he wouldn't recognize her? "Thank you, I'll be there," Lucia said before hanging up with a mix of excitement and nervousness. The conversation left Lucia feeling both hopeful and apprehensive. As she hung up the phone, she couldn't help but feared that recognizing her would jeopardize her chances of getting the job. "Nevertheless, I will attend the interview. This could be my chance to walk back into Smith's life and make him pay for all the pains his rejection had caused me", she told herself. She sat in silence, her mind wandered back to the pain of Smith's rejection and the hardships she had endured since then. Her mind raced back to the unfortunate event which she regarded as the worst part of her existence Angel and Smith, a soon-to-be-married couple, decided to visit Fred, whom Smith had chosen to be his best man. Fred had heard wonderful things about Angel from Smith but had never seen her in person. When they arrived, Angel was shocked to come face-to-face with Fred, the man she had met at a club two years ago and had stolen a large sum of money from. Recognizing her, Fred wasted no time in informing Smith that his beloved fiancee was the same girl who had betrayed him and fled with his money. "I can't continue with this marriage. You have proven not to be trusted and I can't marry who I can't trust", Smith's voice thundered. Angel's pleas echoed through the room, each word filled with desperation and regret. Tears streamed down her face, her torn heart breaking with every passing moment. But Smith, his face hardened with anger, remained unmoved by her display of emotions. "I can't believe you," Smith spat, his voice dripping with disappointment. "All this time, you've been lying to me, keeping secrets from me." Angel's voice trembled as she replied, "I didn't want to burden you with my past, Smith. I thought that by leaving it behind, I could create a better future for both of us." Smith's eyes narrowed, frustration etched on his face. "A better future? How can we have a future built on a foundation of secrecy? If Fred had not told me of your ugly past, would you have told me of this heinous crime you committed? What else have you been hiding? I can't get married to a thief who robbed my friend years ago" Angel's gaze dropped to the floor, unable to meet his accusing stare. "I've made mistakes in the past, Smith. Horrible mistakes that I wish I could erase. The event you are referring to happened two years ago before I met you. Yes I put drugs into Fred's drink, and made away with his money. I used that money to turn my life around, working tirelessly to build a successful restaurant and leave my troubled past behind". She paused for seconds. "I am a changed person now, Smith. Please believe me. I believed that by starting anew, I could leave that darkness behind." She concluded. "Starting anew? How can we build anything when trust has been shattered? How can I trust you with my heart when you haven't been honest with me? You ought to be behind bars now, and have no business with getting married" Smith's voice rose with anger, his words cutting through the air like a knife. "I love you, Smith. I never wanted to hurt you. Every woman has a dark chapter she doesn't want to read aloud. Please, give me another chance. I'll do anything to make it right." Angel's tears continued to flow, her heartache consuming her every breath. "I can't, Angel. I can't marry someone I can't trust. Emily has been there for me, through thick and thin. She has never hidden anything from me. I have chosen her over you." Smith said remaining resolute, his decision firmly made. "Who is Emily?" Angel asked in astonishment. She hadn't heard such a name in his mouth before. "It's none of your business, but if you care to know, she is someone better than you. There are no hidden things about her, unlike you who has numerous skeletons in your cupboard". Smith fired on. The weight of his words crushed Angel's heart, agony etched across her face. "Please, Smith. I beg you… don't do this. Don't abandon me. I'm begging for your forgiveness." Smith's resolve hardened, his eyes blazing with determination. "No, Angel. It's over. Take your belongings and leave. Our happiness can never be built on a foundation of lies." Tears welled up in Angel's eyes as she hurriedly gathered her few possessions strewn throughout the room. The weight of rejection heavy on her shoulders, she felt utterly defeated. Smith watched her every move, his emotions tightly controlled. As Angel walked towards the door, her tears fell freely, leaving a trail of heartache in her wake. The door closed behind her, marking the end of their once beautiful love story. Suddenly, a sound interrupted Lucia's reverie, sending a jolt of surprise through her. It was the familiar chime of the street clock, sounding twelve resonant tones, signaling noon. The sound echoed through the quiet room, cutting through the stillness and filling the air with its presence. "It's 12 noon already; time to feed the birds". She shouted as she jumped out of the wooden armchair in her room to attend to the birds. "This maybe a payback time for Smith" Lucia reminded herself as she walked into one of the cubicles. She had spent far too long allowing her past to hold her captive, and she yearned for a chance to avenge for all she has been through.. With this new glaring job opportunity, Lucia felt it was time to creep back into Smith's life and make him pay for his rejection and all she had suffered as a result. "I'll show him what he's missed out on," she muttered to herself, the determination clear in her voice. Lucia spent the rest of the evening preparing for the interview, choosing her clothes carefully and revising her resume. Despite her concerns about being recognized, she was determined to present herself as the capable and efficient housekeeper Mr. Smith was looking for. "How I wish I could get this job", Lucia said.
