CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO Brian was still groggy when the alarm rang at five-thirty. With so much going on, he wanted to get an early start. He planned to examine the scene at Crystal Lake more carefully in the daylight. The six o’clock local news came on with a breaking story. Detective Springer sustained serious head injuries after a fall yesterday, while boating on Crystal Lake. He is unconscious fighting for his life at Mission Trauma Center in Asheville. The hospital says his prognosis is guarded. He wondered how they got the story so soon but, after all, the incident happened at a public venue and it was inevitable the press would get on it right away. A local detective badly hurt.
