The Fire in the Frost
Chapter 1: The Fire in the Frost
For twenty-one years, Selene Rivers had lived a lie.
Dyeing her snow-white hair a dull brown and hiding her striking silver eyes behind dark contact lenses was a grueling daily ritual, but it was the price of survival. Raised in a quiet human village on the edge of the southern hills, she had always known she was an anomaly. She could hear a heartbeat from across a crowded room, outrun the fastest predators in the valley, and track scents carried on a freezing winter wind.
But tonight, on her twenty-first birthday, the strange fever that had been building beneath her skin for weeks finally reached a boiling point.
I have to move, her inner instincts screamed, a primal voice clawing at the back of her mind.
Ignoring the warning cries of her adoptive guardian, Amara, Selene sprinted deep into the frozen woods. The biting winter air whipped against her bare arms, but she didn't feel the cold. The heavy, raw-cut Moonstone pendant resting against her chest was blistering hot, humming with a rhythmic vibration that perfectly matched the frantic hammering of her heart.
She stopped in a secluded glade, gasping for breath as she clutched the burning relic. According to the dreams that haunted her sleep, her biological parents had died in a sea of fire and snarls to protect her, leaving her with nothing but this stone. She didn't want to be a hidden, fearful stray anymore. Tonight, she wanted answers from her own blood.
Snap.
Selene’s silver eyes pierced through the twilight shadows. The forest had gone dead silent. The wind held its breath, and the ambient sounds of nature vanished.
"Who's there?" she called out, her voice remarkably steady despite the sudden spike of adrenaline. "Step out."
A low, guttural chuckle vibrated through the trees.
Three massive, imposing figures stepped from the dense foliage. They didn't move like humans; they walked with a synchronized, heavy grace, their shoulders hunched and their eyes glowing a dull, predatory yellow. The leader—a scarred brute wearing heavy tactical leather—smiled, revealing elongated, jagged fangs.
"Well, well," the leader muttered, his voice a gravelly bark. "Varyn said the Lunaris scent was bleeding through the southern borders, but I didn't believe him. The last pure white wolf lineage, hiding right under our noses."
Selene backed up a step, her muscles coiling. Lunaris? Wolf lineage? The words triggered a violent thrum inside her chest. "I don't know who Varyn is. Turn around and leave before you regret it."
The men burst into mocking laughter. "The Alpha-less stray thinks she has a choice," the second hunter sneered, his fingers flexing as black claws tore through his skin. "Varyn wants her alive. Her blood holds the keys to the kingdom. Take her!"
In a split second, the two lackeys lunged.
They moved with supernatural velocity, but to Selene’s heightened senses, the world slowed to a crawl. The fever beneath her skin erupted into an absolute inferno. A raw, ancient power she had spent her entire life caging finally shattered its locks.
As the first attacker closed in, his claws reaching for her throat, Selene didn't flinch. She ducked beneath his swipe with impossible fluidity and drove her palm directly into his sternum. A loud, sickening crack echoed through the clearing as the massive shifter was sent flying backward, shattering an oak tree trunk upon impact.
The leader’s laughter cut off instantly. "What the hell... She hasn't even shifted yet!"
The second attacker tackled Selene to the frozen ground, his massive weight knocking the wind from her lungs. She fought back with savage, untamed fury, her fingers clawing at his throat as his fangs snapped inches from her face.
"Pin her down!" the leader roared, rushing forward.
The crushing pressure triggered something deep within Selene’s DNA. The Moonstone pendant against her chest fractured, releasing a blinding flash of pure white, celestial light. A scream tore from her throat, but halfway through, the sound transformed into a deafening, soul-shaking howl that rippled across the entire wolf kingdom.
Her bones snapped and elongated. Thick, luxurious fur pure, brilliant white as fresh winter snow erupted across her skin.
Within seconds, the human girl vanished. Standing over the terrified hunters was a massive, majestic white wolf. Her silver eyes glowed with an ancient, terrifying magic, and an aura of absolute royalty radiated from her form.
The second attacker scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his face pale with primitive terror. "The prophecy... The last Lunaris Queen's heir is alive!"
Selene, fully surrendered to the raw power of her wolf, let out another roaring howl, ready to tear her attackers apart. But before she could lunge, a sudden, oppressive shift in the wind made the fur on her spine stand on end.
The shadows at the edge of the clearing seemed to stretch and deepen. The air became suffocatingly heavy, crackling with an electric intensity that made Selene’s wolf whimper in sudden, involuntary recognition.
Out of the fog stepped a massive, midnight-black wolf. He was twice the size of the other shifters, his muscles rippling like coiled steel beneath his dark coat, and his eyes burned with a piercing, dominant gray.
It was Alpha Kael Duskbane.
Kael had spent years ruling the Eastern Hills with an iron fist, fueled by a burning desire for vengeance against Ruvan the red-eyed monster who had slaughtered his family and the legendary Lunaris clan. He had followed the whispers of a white-haired girl to the south, expecting a myth.
Instead, he found a wildfire.
The moment Kael’s gray eyes locked onto Selene’s pure white form, a physical shockwave of energy snapped between them. The primordial bond locked into place like a vice, making the blood in their veins roar.
Kael’s wolf stepped forward, a low, rumbling growl of possessiveness vibrating in his chest. He had found his fated mate, the key to taming his fracturing bloodline. But as Selene bared her fangs, her silver eyes flashing with a fierce demand for freedom, Kael realized she would rather tear the world down than submit to any Alpha.
