Chapter 2 - Unsettling Discoveries:
The morning sun filtered through the thin curtains of Clara's room, casting delicate patterns on the wooden floor. She woke early, her mind already buzzing with the information she'd gathered the previous day. Tom was still asleep, his soft snores a reminder of his skepticism. Clara dressed quickly, eager to delve deeper into the village’s history. Downstairs, the innkeeper, Mrs. Worthington, served her a modest breakfast of bread, cheese, and fresh fruit. Clara thanked her and started a conversation. "Mrs. Worthington, do you know where I might find records or any written history about Eldridge?" The innkeeper hesitated, her brow furrowing. “You might try the old church archives. Father Bernard keeps the records there. It’s not far, just at the edge of the village.” With a nod of gratitude, Clara finished her meal and set off towards the church. The building was as old as the village itself, its stone walls covered in creeping ivy. Inside, the scent of aged wood and candle wax filled the air. Father Bernard, a kind-looking man in his sixties, greeted her. “Dr. Bennett, I’ve been expecting you. Edgar mentioned your visit. How can I assist you?” Clara explained her quest for historical records, and Father Bernard led her to a dusty, dimly lit room filled with shelves of ancient books and scrolls. “These are our archives,” he said. “Take all the time you need.” Clara spent hours poring over the records, discovering a disturbing pattern. Every full moon, disappearances and animal killings were documented, stretching back hundreds of years. One name that repeatedly appeared in the records was Grimm. The Grimms were a reclusive family, living on the outskirts of Eldridge, often associated with dark tales and misfortune. Intrigued, Clara dug deeper. She found a particularly old and brittle manuscript detailing a grim story. An ancestor of the Grimms, a man named Heinrich, had committed a heinous act – an unspeakable crime against the village. In retaliation, the villagers had cursed him and his bloodline, condemning them to a life of torment and isolation. The more Clara read, the more she realized the curse might be more than mere superstition. She gathered her notes and left the church, her mind racing with new theories. As she walked back through the village, she was approached by an elderly woman with a kind, yet sorrowful face. “Dr. Bennett?” she asked. “Yes, that’s me,” Clara replied. “I’m Agnes. I heard you’re looking into the beast and the curse. I have something to share, if you’re willing to listen.” Clara nodded, eager to hear more. They walked to Agnes’s small cottage, where the air was filled with the scent of herbs and freshly baked bread. They sat by the fire, and Agnes began her tale. “My late husband, Samuel, was among those who tried to hunt the beast. He was a brave man, determined to end the curse. Many years ago, he and a group of villagers ventured into the forest on a night of the full moon. None of them returned. We only found traces of their belongings, torn and bloodied.” Clara listened intently, her heart aching for the loss Agnes had endured. “Do you know what drove them to such a dangerous mission?” Agnes sighed, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Desperation, mostly. We had lost so many animals, and then a child went missing. The village was in panic. They hoped that by confronting the beast, they could end our suffering. But it only brought more grief.” Clara reached out, holding Agnes’s hand. “I’m so sorry for your loss. Do you believe the Grimms are connected to the curse?” Agnes nodded slowly. “There’s something about that family. They’ve always been… different. They keep to themselves, and strange things happen around them. Some say they’re marked by the curse, others believe they have knowledge of it.” Clara felt a shiver run down her spine. “Do you know if any Grimms are still living in the village?” “Yes,” Agnes said softly. “There’s one left. Eliza Grimm. She lives in the old manor, deep in the forest. She’s rarely seen, but some say she knows more about the curse than anyone.” Clara’s resolve hardened. “I need to speak with her. Thank you, Agnes. You’ve been very helpful.” As Clara left Agnes’s cottage, the sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows over the village. She returned to the inn, where Tom was waiting, looking slightly more awake and curious. “Did you find anything?” he asked. “Plenty,” Clara replied. “We need to find Eliza Grimm. She might hold the key to this whole mystery.” Tom raised an eyebrow. “Grimms, huh? Sounds like something out of a fairy tale.” Clara smiled grimly. “Let’s hope this tale has a happy ending.” The following day, Clara and Tom prepared for their journey into the forest. They gathered supplies, including food, water, and basic camping gear, knowing the forest could be treacherous. Edgar provided them with a map and some final warnings. “Be careful,” he said. “The forest is alive with secrets, and not all of them are kind.” With a mixture of excitement and apprehension, Clara and Tom set off towards the forest, the path ahead both literally and figuratively shrouded in darkness. The ancient trees loomed overhead, their branches whispering secrets of the past, as they ventured deeper into the unknown, determined to uncover the truth behind the Lunar Curse.
