Ch. 2

I finished unpacking with both earphones blasting music so I wouldn't hear my roommate. It took a few hours to finish and neatly decorate my space. I took a picture and sent it to my mom. I heard a faint knock on the door and found Brittney looking into the room. I popped an earphone out to hear her invite us to an ice breaker event. I planned on skipping until she added it was required. She said it was a coed party to get to better know all the first-year students that were living on campus. I sighed, really not wanting to socialize. I checked my closet and chose a distressed band t-shirt, ankle jeans, black leather jacket and converse for tonight's festivities. I checked myself in the mirror, realizing my rose gold hair was a complete mess. I straightened it hoping it would help, but it made me look like I had a flat head. I curled my hair in soft curls and let it hang loosely around my shoulders. I puffed up my bangs and did some light makeup, making me not look so dead tired. I added some mascara to my long lashes, showing off my bright green eyes under them. I put a bit of blush, which accentuated my freckles more. Roommate seemed to be getting ready as well in a light pink dress with her long hair tied in a tight, tall ponytail. She wore shoes I would break my ankles in. They made her about 3 inches taller. I could use the height boost myself, but refused to make a fool out of myself in heels. I headed out before her, not wanting the awkwardness of leaving or arriving at the same time. The event was in the field between the girls' dorms and the boys' dorms. They had strung lights out, giving everything a warm glow. There were some fire pits scattered and some patio furniture spread throughout. They had refreshments and food at one table, and I quickly decided I would need a drink to get through this. Of course, I should have realized, as a school-sponsored thing, there would be no alcohol. I sighed, taking a soda instead and hoping the caffeine would help somehow. "Not pleased with the selection?" I looked up to find a tall blonde guy smiling at me. He had light blue eyes like the sky and a dreamy smile. "Was hoping for something a little more…" "Stronger?" He suggested, and I nodded my head, smiling. "How could you tell?" I asked him. "That heavy sigh you let out, " he laughed. "Could you hear that?" I blushed. "Most of us have excellent hearing, you know." Of course, stupid me. I forgot everyone here is supernatural and, as such, most of us have heightened senses. My blush deepened at his words. I placed my cold can of soda on my cheek, trying to cool it down. "Very cute." He pointed to my blush. "More like really embarrassing." I rolled my eyes. "My name's Nate." He introduced himself, hand stretched out. I took it as the music started to blare. "Rain." I yelled. How are we supposed to get to know people with music so loud? "Nice to meet you." He yelled back right as they turned the music down a bit. Everyone turned to look at him. I couldn't help it. Laughing so hard that his face started turning red. "Cute," I teased, using his words. He smiled. "Whatever," Nate and I talked for a while. He was really sweet. He was studying criminal law, wanting to help underrepresented supernaturals in court. I joke he won't get paid enough, but he was really passionate about it. We spoke for a while before Brittney popped up on the mic. "Hello everyone, and welcome again to Partha Octia University," she smiled again. I swear her smile is glued to her face. "We have games and prizes in store for you all, but first let me introduce the other RAs and important figures you need to know." She introduced everyone, and I remembered about 5 names out of the 15 people she introduced. Oops. I hung back as everyone, including Nate, headed towards the games. I wanted to sneak back to the dorms, having made my appearance. I saw my roommate in the distance with a familiar face. I looked more carefully as her arm was wrapped around familiar face's. He had dark shoulder-length hair that was straight as a board. He was pretty muscular, towering over roommate even with her 3 inch heels. His eyes met mine, and I felt the color leave my face. Luke. Luke's bright blue-brown eyes stared back at me, recognizing me at the same moment. His mouth cracked open, almost wanting to say something as he caught me. What the holy f**k. This was the last place I expected to find him. He swore he would never go to college. Luke was my first love and first bad heartbreak. He and I dated for most of high school. He disappeared without a word during our junior year. We had just had s*x for the first time the night before he vanished. I did not know where he went or what happened. I hadn't heard from him for 2 years and now here he was. He stepped toward me, making my roommate let go of his arm. I thought my heart would burst out of my chest at the speed it was beating now. I began to panic, wanting to get away. I turned around, running into the nearby woods. I let Heli take over, her paws pushing us forward into the night. The cold earth beneath us provided a pleasant relief from the heat we felt inside. Luke was here of all places after leaving me without a word 2 years ago. I remember how my heart shattered to pieces the day I found out he left. Heli kept us running, running away from memories. Running away from the night he took my virginity, running away from the night he professed his undying love. We were running away from those beautiful blue-brown eyes and long, dark hair. From those hands that knew just how to touch us, to the lips that tasted of honey. We ran for a while. The full moon behind us gave us more power and energy until we reached a cliff. Heli let out a long loud howl, letting me pour all my feelings out. What I didn't expect was a howl in return. We turned to look at a giant black wolf with hues of blue staring at Heli and I. Their golden eyes stared back at us as if they knew something we didn't. Heli began to approach him, slowly, cautiously. A smell of pine and cinnamon enveloped him, drawing us even closer. 'Mate' Heli said, and it all snapped into place. Before I could shift to talk to him in person, he turned and ran away. I had finally found my mate, but did not know what he looked like in person or what his name was. He literally ran away from us. What am I supposed to do with that?
