CHAPTER 7: THE MARK OF THE SHADOW The courtyard had barely settled from the previous battle when tension rose again like a storm gathering over the pack. The wounded warrior’s words echoed in my mind long after he was carried away, The Shadow Pack is back. No one spoke loudly anymore. The whispers had turned into silence, the kind that came before something far worse. I stood near the entrance of the pack house, the cool night air brushing against my skin as unease settled deep in my chest. Across the courtyard, warriors moved quickly, reinforcing defenses, sharpening weapons, preparing for something none of them fully understood. And at the center of it all stood Alpha Kael, issuing orders with calm precision, though I could feel the storm brewing beneath his control. His eyes met mine briefly, and something unspoken passed between us before he turned away again. Selena appeared moments later, her expression sharper than ever, her usual elegance replaced with visible frustration. “This is not a coincidence,” she said, her voice low but firm as she approached Kael. “First the rogue attack, now the Shadow Pack. Something is happening.” Kael didn’t respond immediately. His gaze was fixed on the northern forest, dark and unreadable. “I know,” he said finally. “Which is why we need to act carefully.” Selena scoffed softly, folding her arms. “Carefully? Or blindly trusting her?” Her eyes flicked toward me with clear accusation. I stiffened but didn’t look away this time. Something inside me had changed, and I refused to shrink under her gaze again. “I don’t trust coincidences,” Selena continued, stepping closer. “A girl who suddenly gains a wolf, a silver one at that, and now an ancient enemy returns? You expect me to believe those things are unrelated?” The courtyard fell quieter as a few nearby warriors pretended not to listen. Kael’s voice dropped slightly. “Enough, Selena.” But she didn’t stop. “No,” she said sharply. “You need to see what’s right in front of you. She is connected to this.” Her finger pointed directly at me now, and for a moment, the old fear tried to rise again, but it didn’t take hold. My wolf stirred instead, calm but alert. “I didn’t summon anyone,” I said quietly, my voice steady despite the weight of her accusation. Selena’s lips curved into a cold smile. “Maybe not intentionally.” Kael stepped between us then, his presence cutting through the tension instantly. “That’s enough,” he said firmly. “We don’t have time for this.” His tone left no room for argument, but Selena’s eyes burned with silent defiance as she stepped back. Before anything else could be said, a second horn blast echoed through the territory, louder and more urgent than before. Every wolf froze. Then chaos erupted again. “Movement at the northern ridge!” a guard shouted from the wall. Kael turned instantly. “Positions!” he commanded. “All warriors to the northern line!” Wolves shifted and ran without hesitation, the pack moving like a single living force. My heart pounded as the same pull from before surged through me again. Fear and adrenaline mixed into something sharper, something stronger. I didn’t think this time, I ran with them. The northern ridge was darker than the rest of the territory, the trees thicker, the shadows deeper. By the time we arrived, the warriors had already formed a defensive line. Growls rippled through the forest as shapes began to emerge from the darkness. My breath caught. These weren’t rogues. They moved differently, organized, controlled, silent until they chose not to be. Then I saw it. A mark burned into their fur near the shoulder, a twisted crescent surrounded by claw-like lines. The Shadow Pack. A low, chilling howl rose from their ranks, and it sent a shiver down my spine. It wasn’t just a call, it was a warning. Kael stepped forward in his wolf form, larger and more imposing than any wolf on our side. His presence alone held the line steady. But even he seemed tense. The Shadow Pack wolves didn’t rush in blindly like rogues. They spread out slowly, circling, watching, calculating. They were testing us. “Stay behind the front line,” one of the warriors muttered to me, but I barely heard him. My focus was locked on the enemy. My wolf was restless again. They know us, she whispered. They can feel us. I swallowed hard. “Why?” Because we are what they were waiting for. The words sent a chill through me, but there was no time to question it. Without warning, the Shadow Pack attacked. They moved as one, crashing into our defenses with terrifying coordination. The impact shook the ground beneath my feet. Snarls and cries filled the air as wolves clashed violently. I hesitated for only a second before shifting again. The transformation came faster now, smoother, as if my body had already begun to accept it as natural. The moment my paws hit the ground, everything sharpened. A Shadow wolf lunged toward one of our younger warriors. I intercepted it, slamming into its side with enough force to send it tumbling. It recovered quickly, too quickly, and came at me again. This one was stronger than the rogues had been. Smarter too. It feinted left, then struck from the right, claws grazing my side. Pain flared, but I pushed through it, countering with a bite aimed at its neck. It twisted away, barely avoiding it. We circled each other, both waiting for the other to slip. Around us, the battle raged harder. I could feel the strain on our pack. The Shadow wolves weren’t just attacking, they were probing, searching. For something. For me, my wolf whispered. The realization hit me like a blow. They weren’t here by accident. The wolf in front of me suddenly lunged again, faster than before. This time I met it head-on. Our bodies collided, teeth snapping, claws tearing. I felt its strength, but mine surged to match it, and then surpass it. A strange energy flowed through me, stronger than anything I had felt before. With a powerful twist, I forced it to the ground, my jaws closing around its throat. It froze. For a moment, the entire battlefield seemed to pause. The Shadow wolf beneath me didn’t fight. It stared at me. Then, slowly, it lowered its gaze. Submission. Shock rippled through the nearby wolves, both ours and theirs. I released it, stepping back cautiously. The wolf scrambled away, retreating instead of attacking again. That was when I noticed something else. The other Shadow wolves had stopped advancing. They were watching now. Watching me. Kael noticed it too. He shifted back into human form, breathing heavily as he scanned the battlefield. “Fall back!” he ordered suddenly. The command caught everyone off guard, but no one disobeyed. The warriors pulled back, regrouping quickly. The Shadow Pack didn’t chase. Instead, they slowly retreated into the forest, disappearing as silently as they had come. The battle ended as abruptly as it had begun. But the silence that followed was heavier than before. Kael turned toward me immediately, his expression intense. “They weren’t here to fight,” he said. “They were here to confirm.” My chest tightened. “Confirm what?” His gaze locked onto mine. “You.” The word landed heavily between us. Behind him, Selena looked furious, but also unsettled. “This proves it,” she said. “They came because of her.” No one argued this time. Because deep down, we all knew it was true. As the warriors began tending to the wounded, I stood there, my heart still racing, my mind spinning. My wolf was quiet now, but not calm. Waiting. Watching. This is only the beginning, she whispered again. And for the first time, I truly believed it. Because somewhere out there in the darkness, the Shadow Pack was watching. And now… they knew exactly where to find me.
