CHAPTER 6: THE SILVER WOLF The battlefield slowly fell silent. The last of the rogue wolves had fled into the darkness of the forest, their howls fading deeper into the mountains. The scent of blood still hung thick in the air, mixing with the damp smell of dirt and crushed leaves beneath the warriors’ paws. The Silver Claw Pack stood scattered across the outer courtyard. Some wolves were injured. Some were exhausted. But most of them were staring at me. Their gazes burned against my skin like fire. Shock. Suspicion. Curiosity. Fear. I shifted uncomfortably, suddenly aware that I stood in the center of the courtyard wearing nothing but Kael’s spare cloak that one of the warriors had quietly handed me after the battle. My hands trembled slightly as I tightened the cloak around myself. Only an hour ago, I had been invisible to these people. Now they looked at me like I had become something else entirely. Something dangerous. Kael stood a few feet away from me, his tall figure rigid and commanding. Even after the battle, his presence filled the entire courtyard with quiet authority. But unlike the others, he wasn’t whispering. He wasn’t questioning. He was simply watching me. Studying me. Trying to understand. The silence stretched uncomfortably until Selena finally broke it. “This is absurd.” Her sharp voice cut through the courtyard like a blade. She stepped forward, her elegant silver armor barely scratched despite the battle. Her eyes locked onto me with thinly veiled hatred. “She’s a servant,” Selena continued. “Servants do not suddenly become warriors overnight.” Several pack members nodded uncertainly. It was what they had always believed. Servants cleaned. Warriors fought. That was the order of the pack. But Kael’s voice came out calm and firm. “She fought.” Selena turned sharply toward him. “That doesn’t mean anything.” “She killed two rogues,” one warrior spoke from behind the crowd. Another added quietly, “And she forced one into submission.” Whispers spread through the courtyard again. Selena’s face tightened. “That’s impossible.” Kael didn’t raise his voice. But when he spoke again, the courtyard went completely silent. “Then explain what we all just witnessed.” Selena opened her mouth… then closed it again. Because she had no explanation. Neither did anyone else. Not even me. Kael finally turned fully toward me. “Come with me.” My heart skipped. Without another word, he walked toward the pack house. Everyone parted for him instantly. For a moment, I hesitated. Then I followed. The heavy wooden doors of the pack house closed behind us with a loud thud, cutting off the whispers outside. Inside, the warm light of lanterns illuminated the large council room. Kael walked to the center of the room before turning to face me. “Sit.” I sat slowly in one of the large chairs. The battle had drained my strength more than I realized. My arms still shook slightly. Kael remained standing. His golden eyes studied me carefully. “Tell me everything.” I frowned. “There’s not much to tell.” “Start with your wolf.” I hesitated. “I didn’t know I had one until last night.” “That shouldn’t be possible.” “I know.” “Then how did it happen?” I took a slow breath. “The night you rejected me… something happened.” His jaw tightened slightly. But he didn’t interrupt. “I ran into the forest,” I continued. “And then I heard a voice.” Kael’s eyes narrowed. “A voice?” “In my head.” “What did it say?” “That I wasn’t weak.” The words sounded strange now that I said them out loud. Kael leaned back against the edge of the table behind him. “And then?” “I passed out.” His brows furrowed. “When I woke up, everything felt different. My senses were stronger… and I could feel something inside me.” “Your wolf.” I nodded. “But I didn’t shift until tonight.” Kael was silent for several long seconds. Then he asked quietly, “Did your wolf say anything else?” My heart skipped. “She said they would fear us.” “Who?” “I don’t know.” Kael exhaled slowly. Something troubled him. I could see it in his expression. “What is it?” I asked. He looked at me carefully before answering. “Your wolf is silver.” “Yes.” “There are no silver wolves in this region.” I frowned. “What does that mean?” “It means your wolf may belong to an older bloodline.” A cold chill slid down my spine. “Older how?” Kael hesitated. Then he said the words slowly. “Royal.” The word hung heavily in the air. I stared at him. “That’s impossible.” “Maybe.” “But I’m just a servant.” Kael’s eyes softened slightly. “Maybe you were never meant to be one.” Before I could respond, the door burst open. Selena stormed into the room. Her face was pale with anger. “You cannot be serious.” Kael turned toward her calmly. “Knocking exists for a reason.” “I don’t care,” Selena snapped. “The council is already talking.” “About what?” “About her.” Her eyes burned as they landed on me. “They think she’s some kind of prophecy.” My stomach twisted. “What prophecy?” Selena laughed bitterly. “Oh, you haven’t told her?” Kael’s expression darkened. “That legend is centuries old.” “Legends don’t appear in battlefields,” Selena shot back. Silence filled the room again. My heart pounded. “What prophecy?” I repeated. Neither of them answered immediately. Finally, Kael spoke. “There is an old story among the wolf packs.” “About a silver wolf.” Selena crossed her arms. “Not just any silver wolf.” She stared directly at me. “The Silver Wolf Queen.” My breath caught. “That’s ridiculous.” “Maybe,” Selena said coldly. “But that legend says the Silver Wolf would rise during a time of war.” Kael’s gaze flicked toward the window. “War is coming.” Selena’s voice grew sharper. “And the legend says she would be powerful enough to unite or destroy every pack.” The room felt suddenly colder. My hands trembled. “I’m not a queen.” Selena smiled thinly. “That’s what worries me.” Before anyone could say anything else, A loud crash echoed from outside the pack house. All three of us turned instantly. Kael moved first. He rushed to the door and threw it open. Shouts filled the courtyard. A warrior stumbled toward the pack house, blood covering his chest. “Alpha!” Kael grabbed him before he collapsed. “What happened?” The warrior struggled to breathe. “They… they attacked the northern patrol…” Kael’s expression hardened. “Rogues?” The warrior shook his head weakly. “No.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “They wore the mark of the Shadow Pack.” Selena’s face went pale. “The Shadow Pack has been gone for years.” The warrior’s eyes widened with fear. “They’re back.” Outside, another distant howl echoed through the mountains. Long. Dark. Dangerous. Kael slowly stood. His golden eyes burned with determination. Then he looked at me. And for the first time since we met, There was no doubt in his voice. “If war is coming,” he said quietly. “We’re going to need the Silver Wolf.” My heart pounded violently. Because deep inside… My wolf whispered the same thing. The war had already begun.
