CHAPTER 5: BLOOD UNDER THE MOON The attack horn echoed across the Silver Claw territory again. Long. Sharp. Urgent. My heart slammed violently against my ribs as wolves rushed past me toward the outer gates. The peaceful night had shattered in seconds, replaced by chaos, growls, and the thunder of running feet. Warriors shifted mid-stride. Bones cracked. Fur burst through skin. Within moments the courtyard was filled with massive wolves racing toward battle. I froze near the weapon rack, fear gripping my chest. I had never fought before. Not once. Servants like me didn’t train with warriors. We cleaned their wounds after battles. We carried their weapons. But we never stood beside them. Yet the energy inside me pulsed harder than ever. Alive. Hungry. My wolf stirred again. We cannot hide now. “I don’t know how to fight,” I whispered. Her answer came instantly. Instinct will guide you. Another howl echoed beyond the gates. Enemy wolves. Many of them. The ground trembled as the pack rushed forward. Then I heard his voice. “Hold the western flank!” Alpha Kael. Power rolled through the air as he shifted into his massive black wolf. Even from a distance his presence commanded obedience. Warriors immediately obeyed his orders, forming defensive lines along the stone walls. I ran toward the gate before I could stop myself. My heart pounded wildly. What was I doing? I had no training. No experience. No right to stand on a battlefield. But something deep inside me refused to stay behind. The rejected girl was done hiding. When I reached the gates, the battle had already begun. Enemy wolves poured through the broken outer fence. Dark fur. Red eyes. Rogues. At least twenty of them. Their snarls echoed through the night as they crashed into the Silver Claw warriors. The clash of teeth and claws filled the air. Growls. Snaps. Painful yelps. Blood splattered across the dirt. Fear tried to lock my body in place. But my wolf pushed forward. Shift. I hesitated only a second before letting the transformation take over. The shift came faster than before. Bones bent and twisted. Silver fur exploded across my skin. My senses sharpened instantly. The battlefield became clear. I could hear every heartbeat. Smell every drop of blood. See every movement. And suddenly, I wasn’t afraid anymore. A rogue lunged toward a wounded warrior near the wall. Without thinking, I leaped forward. My paws slammed into the rogue mid-air, knocking him violently to the ground. The impact stunned both of us. The rogue snarled and snapped at my throat. But instinct took over. I twisted my body and slammed my paw across his skull. The force sent him crashing into the dirt. Shock rippled through me. I had done that. Before the rogue could recover, my wolf lunged again. My teeth sank into his shoulder. Hot blood filled my mouth. The rogue howled in pain. He struggled beneath me, but I was stronger. Much stronger. With one final snap of my jaws, The rogue went still. I stumbled backward, panting heavily. My first fight. My first kill. The realization sent a strange mixture of fear and adrenaline rushing through my veins. But there was no time to think. Another rogue charged toward me. This one was bigger. Faster. His eyes glowed red with hunger. He circled slowly, studying me. A low growl rumbled from my chest. He lunged suddenly. But my body moved before my mind could react. I ducked beneath his attack and slammed my shoulder into his ribs. The rogue flew sideways. Warriors nearby stopped fighting long enough to stare. A silver wolf. None of them had ever seen one like me before. The rogue recovered quickly and attacked again. This time I was ready. Our bodies collided violently. Claws scraped across my shoulder. Pain flashed through me, but it only fueled the fire burning inside my chest. I snapped at his throat. He barely dodged. But my wolf pushed harder. Faster. Stronger. Within seconds I had him pinned. My teeth hovered over his neck. The rogue froze. For a moment we stared at each other. Then he whimpered. Submission. The sound shocked me. I released him slowly. He scrambled backward and ran into the forest. I didn’t chase him. Something inside me told me the battle was already turning. And then I felt it. A powerful presence behind me. I turned. Alpha Kael stood several yards away in his massive black wolf form. His golden eyes burned as he stared at me. Shock rolled from him in waves. And something else. Respect. Around us, the Silver Claw warriors had begun pushing the rogues back toward the forest. The enemy numbers were shrinking quickly. The battle was nearly over. But Kael didn’t look at the retreating rogues. He only looked at me. I could feel his wolf studying mine. Curious. Confused. Drawn closer despite the broken bond between us. Slowly, Kael stepped forward. The warriors nearby moved aside automatically. Even the rogues seemed hesitant to approach him. The most powerful Alpha in the territory was watching me like I had become the greatest mystery of his life. My wolf stood tall beneath the moonlight. I refused to lower my head. I refused to submit. The warriors noticed immediately. Several gasped quietly. No wolf stood before an Alpha like that. Except… Apparently I did. Kael stopped a few feet away. His golden eyes locked onto mine. For a moment neither of us moved. The battlefield around us faded into silence. Then Kael did something that shocked everyone. He lowered his head slightly. Not a full bow. But enough. A gesture of respect. The warriors stared in disbelief. An Alpha acknowledging another wolf. And not just any wolf. A servant. The rejected girl. My chest tightened. I shifted back into human form slowly. My body trembled slightly from exhaustion as the fur retreated into my skin. The cool night air brushed against me again. Kael shifted a moment later. He stepped toward me, his expression intense. “Where did you learn to fight like that?” he asked quietly. “I didn’t.” His eyes narrowed. “That’s impossible.” “I just followed my instincts.” The warriors around us were whispering now. Confused. Shocked. Selena pushed her way through the crowd. Her eyes burned as they landed on me. “What is she doing here?” she demanded. “She fought,” one warrior replied. “She killed two rogues,” another added. Selena’s expression darkened. “That’s ridiculous. She’s a servant.” Kael didn’t take his eyes off me. “She’s not just a servant anymore.” Those words sent a ripple through the crowd. Selena stared at him in disbelief. “What are you saying?” Kael’s gaze remained fixed on me. “I’m saying we don’t know what she is yet.” The way he said it made my stomach twist. Because he was right. I didn’t know either. And deep inside me, My wolf whispered something that made my blood run cold. This is only the beginning. Far beyond the pack borders, hidden deep within the forest, another pair of glowing eyes watched the battle’s aftermath. A tall figure stood silently among the trees. His dark cloak blended perfectly with the night. A faint smile curved his lips. “So,” he murmured softly. “The Silver Wolf has awakened.” The man turned and disappeared into the darkness. And somewhere in the distance… A low, dangerous howl echoed beneath the moon. The war had only just begun.
