CHAPTER 4: THE ALPHA WHO BOWED
The forest fell silent after Alpha Kael lowered his head.
Even the wind seemed to pause, as if the entire world had witnessed something impossible.
An Alpha bowing.
Not in submission.
Not in defeat.
But in instinctive recognition.
I stood frozen in my silver wolf form, my heart pounding wildly inside my chest. Moonlight washed over my fur, making it shimmer like liquid metal.
Kael remained still several feet away, his massive black wolf watching me with burning golden eyes.
Shock rolled from him in powerful waves.
Confusion.
Recognition.
And something deeper.
Something neither of us understood.
My wolf stirred inside me, calm and steady.
“Do not fear him,” she whispered.
Her voice sounded clearer now.
Stronger.
“Who are you?” I asked silently.
“I am yours.”
Warmth spread through my chest.
“And you are mine.”
Before I could respond, Kael took a cautious step forward.
Instinct surged through me immediately.
My body tensed.
A low warning growl vibrated in my throat before I even realized it.
Kael stopped instantly.
His ears tilted back slightly.
Not in aggression.
In caution.
Respect.
No one had ever looked at me like that before.
No one had ever treated me like an equal.
Slowly, carefully, Kael lowered himself onto his haunches.
His golden eyes never left mine.
The Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack, the strongest wolf for miles, sat quietly before me as if waiting for permission to move.
The realization shook me.
How could this be possible?
I had been nothing.
Less than nothing.
A wolfless servant.
A rejected mate.
And now,
An Alpha treated me like a queen.
Fear and power twisted together inside me.
My wolf nudged gently against my thoughts.
“You were never weak.”
I didn’t know whether to believe her.
Kael shifted first.
His massive wolf form dissolved into human skin and muscle in seconds. He stood before me, tall and powerful, completely unashamed of his nakedness as most wolves were.
His blond hair fell messily across his forehead.
His chest rose and fell slowly as he tried to steady his breathing.
“Lira,” he said quietly.
Hearing my name in his voice sent an unfamiliar warmth through me.
I focused on shifting.
The transformation came easier than I expected. My bones shifted smoothly, fur retreating into skin until I stood barefoot on the cold forest floor.
Kael stared.
Shock flickered across his face again.
“You shifted…” he said.
His voice sounded hoarse.
“You have a wolf.”
I wrapped my arms around myself instinctively.
“I didn’t know.”
His eyes searched mine.
“That’s impossible. Every wolf manifests at eighteen.”
“I’m nineteen.”
Silence fell between us.
Kael shook his head slowly.
“No wolf appears this late.”
“I told you I didn’t know.”
Something unreadable passed through his eyes.
Then he stepped closer.
Too close.
The mate bond stirred faintly between us, but it felt different now.
Weaker.
As if something far greater stood in its place.
“Your wolf,” he said quietly. “She’s not normal.”
Fear flickered in my chest.
“What do you mean?”
“I felt her power from across the territory.”
My breath caught.
“No ordinary wolf could do that.”
Panic tightened around my heart.
“What am I?”
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached out slowly.
His hand hovered near my cheek.
I froze.
For a moment, I thought he might touch me.
Then he stopped himself.
Guilt flickered across his face.
“I rejected you,” he said quietly.
The words cut deep despite everything.
“I know.”
His jaw tightened.
“I shouldn’t have done it so quickly.”
Pain rose inside me.
But my wolf stirred again.
Steady.
Strong.
“You do not need him.”
And for the first time,
I believed it.
“I should go,” I said softly.
Kael’s eyes darkened.
“This isn’t over.”
I turned and walked away.
He didn’t stop me.
But I could feel his eyes on my back the entire time.
The next morning, the pack buzzed with tension.
Something had changed.
I could feel it the moment I stepped outside.
Whispers followed me as I walked.
Eyes lingered too long.
The wolves sensed something.
Even if they didn’t understand it yet.
As I passed through the yard, Darren stood with several warriors.
Their conversation stopped when they saw me.
Darren frowned.
“Something’s off about her.”
I kept walking.
Ignoring them felt easier now.
Their opinions didn’t matter the way they once had.
Still,
Unease curled inside me.
Kael knew.
And if he knew…
It was only a matter of time before everyone else did too.
Training began shortly after sunrise.
Normally servants stayed far from the field.
But today,
Kael ordered everyone to gather.
Even the lowest-ranked wolves.
Including me.
I stood at the edge of the training ground with the other servants, unsure why we had been called.
Kael stood before the pack.
Strong.
Commanding.
Unshakable.
“This pack is under threat,” he announced.
Murmurs spread immediately.
“There was a power surge in our territory last night.”
My stomach tightened.
Kael’s eyes found mine briefly before returning to the crowd.
“We must remain alert.”
Selena stepped forward gracefully.
Future Luna.
Perfect Selena.
“What kind of threat?” she asked.
Kael hesitated.
“I don’t know yet.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
Then her gaze shifted toward me.
Suspicion flickered there.
Cold and sharp.
I looked away quickly.
Training exercises began soon after.
Wolves sparred in pairs across the field.
Growls and shouts filled the air.
I stayed near the supply tables, organizing equipment as usual.
But something felt wrong.
The energy inside me pulsed restlessly.
Alive.
Awake.
Watching.
Suddenly,
A warrior crashed into the supply table beside me.
Weapons clattered loudly to the ground.
The warrior groaned in pain.
Without thinking, I reached down and lifted him.
Easily.
Like he weighed nothing.
He stared at me in shock.
“So strong…”
Realization hit me too late.
Others had seen.
Several wolves stood frozen nearby.
Watching.
Whispering.
Fear prickled down my spine.
I stepped back quickly.
“I just reacted,” I said.
No one answered.
Then,
Everything changed.
A horn sounded suddenly from the outer gates.
Sharp.
Urgent.
Danger.
Kael turned instantly.
“Attack formation!”
The pack moved at once.
Warriors shifted mid-run, wolves bursting free in flashes of fur and muscle.
Panic spread across the grounds.
I stood frozen.
“What do I do?” I whispered.
My wolf answered instantly.
“Fight.”
A howl echoed from the distance.
Not one of ours.
Enemy wolves.
And they were close.
Very close.
Kael shifted into his massive black wolf and raced toward the gates.
Without thinking,
I followed.
The power inside me surged wildly.
Alive.
Hungry.
Ready.
And somewhere deep inside,
My wolf smiled.
Because the rejected girl was about to show the world what she truly was.
