Chapter 1 The Last Breath
Chapter 1
The Last Breath
The rain had been falling for hours.
Elena watched it through the hospital window, each drop racing down the glass before disappearing into the darkness below.
She had always loved the rain.
Tonight, however, it sounded different.
Almost like a goodbye.
Her fingers trembled beneath the thin white blanket. The room was cold, but she could barely feel it anymore. Her body had become strangely distant from her, as though she were slowly becoming a ghost trapped inside her own skin.
A heart monitor beside her bed continued its steady rhythm.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, she remembered being a little girl, running barefoot through her grandmother's garden while the rain poured around her. She remembered her mother's voice calling her inside. She remembered laughter.
She remembered being happy.
Then the memories changed.
A broken promise.
A slammed door.
A face she had once trusted.
A voice whispering, I never loved you.
Elena opened her eyes.
A single tear slipped down her cheek.
"Why?" she whispered.
There was no answer.
She looked toward the empty chair beside her bed.
She had hoped someone would come.
Just one person.
Someone who would hold her hand and tell her that everything was going to be okay.
But the chair remained empty.
Perhaps that was the cruelest part.
She had spent her entire life afraid of being alone.
And now, at the end of it, she was.
The monitor beeped again.
Slower this time.
Beep.
...
Beep.
...
Beep.
Elena swallowed.
She wasn't ready.
Despite everything that had happened, despite all the pain she had carried, she wasn't ready to let go.
"I want more time," she whispered.
Her voice broke.
"Please."
The lights above her seemed to blur.
The rain outside became quieter.
Her heartbeat became weaker.
She thought about all the things she had never said.
I'm sorry.
I forgive you.
I love you.
I wish I had been brave enough.
Another tear escaped her eye.
Then suddenly—
Silence.
The monitor gave one long, continuous sound.
BEEEEEEEEEP.
Elena's eyes closed.
And the world disappeared.
---
She expected darkness.
Instead, she heard music.
Soft piano notes floated through the air, distant and beautiful.
Elena opened her eyes.
She was standing.
Her hospital gown was gone.
She looked down and found herself wearing a long white dress that moved gently even though there was no wind.
She turned around.
There was no hospital.
No rain.
No machines.
No pain.
Only an endless field beneath a sky filled with golden clouds.
"What... is this?"
Her voice echoed across the empty landscape.
Then someone answered.
"Where you go after you die."
Elena froze.
A woman stood several meters away.
She appeared to be around Elena's age, perhaps a little older. She wore a simple white dress and had long dark hair that moved gently in the breeze.
But there was something strange about her.
Elena couldn't explain it.
She felt as if she knew her.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled sadly.
"Someone who knows what you're going through."
"Am I dead?"
The woman's smile disappeared.
"Yes."
Elena's heart sank.
Even though she already knew the answer, hearing it made everything real.
She looked around.
"So this is heaven?"
"No."
"Then where am I?"
"Between."
"Between what?"
"Life and death."
Elena stared at her.
The woman walked closer.
"Most people pass through this place without remembering it. They see what they need to see, accept what they need to accept, and then they move on."
"Move on where?"
The woman looked toward the golden horizon.
"Somewhere beyond this."
Elena followed her gaze.
For the first time since waking, she felt peace.
Maybe this was it.
Maybe she could finally let go.
But then she remembered something.
"My mother."
The woman looked at her.
"What about her?"
"Will I see her?"
A pause.
"Not yet."
Elena's chest tightened.
"What do you mean?"
"Your story isn't finished."
Elena almost laughed.
"My story ended."
"No."
The woman stepped closer.
"You died. That doesn't mean your story ended."
Elena shook her head.
"I don't understand."
"You were given a choice."
"What choice?"
The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver object.
It looked like an old pocket watch.
She opened it.
The hands weren't moving.
"There are moments in every life that change everything," she said. "Some people wish they could go back and change those moments."
Elena stared at the watch.
"Can I?"
"Yes."
Her breath caught.
"But there is a price."
"What price?"
"You cannot return as the person you were."
Elena frowned.
"Then who will I be?"
"Someone new."
The woman closed the watch.
"Your memories will be hidden. Your old life will become a distant dream. You will be given another body, another name, another beginning."
"And my past?"
"It will find you."
A cold feeling moved through Elena.
"What does that mean?"
The woman didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward the horizon.
Dark clouds were beginning to gather in the distance.
"Someone is waiting for you."
"Who?"
The woman looked directly into Elena's eyes.
"The person who killed you."
Elena stopped breathing.
"What?"
Before she could ask another question, the peaceful field began to change.
The flowers around her withered.
The golden sky turned black.
The wind became violent.
The woman grabbed Elena's hand.
"You have to choose now."
"Choose what?"
"Death..."
She pointed toward the dark horizon.
"...or life."
Elena looked behind her.
The darkness was coming closer.
Then she looked ahead.
A brilliant white light appeared in the distance.
She could hear voices.
A baby's cry.
A woman's scream.
A man's desperate voice.
And somewhere among those sounds, she heard a whisper.
Her own voice.
Run.
Elena stepped backward.
"What is happening?"
The woman squeezed her hand.
"You're running out of time."
"I don't want to die again."
"Then don't."
Elena stared at the light.
She thought about the empty chair beside her hospital bed.
She thought about all the things she had never finished.
All the questions that had never been answered.
All the love she had never been brave enough to accept.
Maybe she had been given something no one else received.
A second chance.
Elena took one step toward the light.
Then another.
"Will I remember you?"
The woman smiled.
"Eventually."
"Who are you?"
The woman whispered four words.
Words that Elena would remember for the rest of her second life.
"I was you before you."
The light swallowed everything.
---
Elena screamed.
Air rushed into her lungs.
Her eyes opened.
Bright lights blinded her.
Voices surrounded her.
"She's breathing!"
"Get the doctor!"
"Her heartbeat is back!"
Elena gasped, desperately trying to understand where she was.
Someone placed a blanket over her.
She looked around.
White walls.
Medical equipment.
People moving around her.
A hospital.
Again.
But something was different.
She raised her hands.
They weren't hers.
They were smaller.
Younger.
Her heart raced.
"What happened?" a nurse asked.
Elena tried to speak.
Only a weak cry escaped her lips.
Then she heard a woman sobbing beside her.
"My baby..."
Elena turned toward the voice.
A young woman was crying.
A man stood beside her, holding her shoulder.
The woman looked down at Elena with tears streaming from her eyes.
"She's alive."
Elena stared at them.
Baby?
She tried to move.
She couldn't.
She tried to speak.
She couldn't.
Panic filled her chest.
Then she saw a mirror across the room.
Her reflection stared back at her.
A tiny newborn baby.
Elena's mind went completely silent.
She wanted to scream.
She wanted to wake up.
She wanted to go back.
But deep inside her heart, something whispered:
You chose this.
The hospital room suddenly became quiet.
And somewhere far away, thunder rolled across the sky.
Elena closed her newborn eyes.
She had been given another life.
But she didn't know yet that someone else had been given a second chance too.
And that person remembered everything.
