Chapter 5: The King's Mark

962 Words
The hall did not calm. If anything— it grew worse. Voices rose. Anger spread. Disbelief echoed through every corner of the chamber. “A human cannot be a mate!” “This is against our laws!” “The King has lost control—” “Enough.” Kael didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. The single word cut through the chaos like a blade. Silence fell instantly. Every Lycan froze. Even the air seemed to still. That was his power. Absolute. Unquestioned. --- At the far end of the hall, five figures rose. The Council of Alphas. Each one powerful. Each one dangerous. And none of them pleased. One of them stepped forward. Tall. Scarred. His golden eyes burned with open hostility. “Your Majesty,” he said coldly, “you dare bring a human into our sacred court… and now claim she is your mate?” A low murmur followed. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t react. “She is not just human,” he replied calmly. The Alpha scoffed. “Then what is she?” For a brief moment— Kael’s gaze shifted to me. And something in it changed. Softer. Possessive. Certain. Then he said: “She is mine.” --- The words hit harder than anything else. Mine. Not a title. Not a role. A claim. My breath caught. And judging by the reaction around us— everyone else felt it too. --- Another Alpha stepped forward. Older. His presence quieter—but heavier. More dangerous in a different way. “This is not just about you, Kael,” he said. “The prophecy speaks clearly.” The room shifted again. Even the warriors looked uneasy now. Kael’s jaw tightened. “I am aware of the prophecy.” “Then you understand the risk.” Silence stretched. Tense. Waiting. The first Alpha growled. “A human tied to the throne will bring chaos. The other packs will see weakness. They will challenge you.” Kael’s aura exploded. Invisible. But undeniable. The torches flickered violently. The ground itself seemed to tremble beneath the weight of his power. “No one questions my strength.” His voice was low. Deadly. Final. The Alpha stepped back. Not by choice. By instinct. --- I stood there— caught in the middle of something far bigger than me. Prophecy? Mate? King? None of this made sense. None of this was supposed to be my life. --- Then suddenly— Kael grabbed my wrist. Gasps filled the hall. The contact sent a sharp pulse through my body. Heat. Power. Something alive. Before I could react, he pulled me closer— until I stood directly beside him. My heart raced. “What are you doing?” I whispered. He didn’t answer. Instead, he looked at the council. “Watch carefully.” The room fell silent again. Tense. Expectant. Dangerous. --- Kael’s hand moved— slowly— deliberately— to my chin. He tilted my face upward. Forcing me to meet his gaze. My breath caught. There was something different in his eyes now. Something deeper. Primal. “What are you doing?” I asked again, softer this time. Still— no answer. --- Then— I saw it. His fangs. Sharp. Deadly. Too real. Too close. My pulse spiked. “Wait—” I didn’t finish. Because in the next second— he bit me. --- Pain shot through my neck. Sharp. Sudden. A gasp tore from my lips. But it didn’t last. The pain changed. Twisted. Melted into something else entirely. Heat. Blinding. Powerful. It rushed through my veins like fire. Like something ancient waking up inside me. I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. The world blurred. And for a split second— golden light flickered beneath my skin. --- Then— it stopped. Kael pulled back slowly. His grip still steady on me. Holding me upright. Holding me close. Too close. The room was silent. Completely silent. --- I lifted my shaking hand to my neck. And froze. A symbol burned faintly into my skin. Glowing. Alive. Real. “What… did you do to me?” I whispered. No one answered. Because they were all staring. --- One of the Alphas stepped forward slowly. His eyes wide. Voice barely above a whisper. “The bond…” He looked at Kael. Then at me. “It has begun.” --- Shock spread across the hall. Not anger this time. Not disbelief. Something else. Something deeper. Fear. --- The first Alpha slammed his fist against his throne. “This is madness!” But the older Alpha raised his hand. “No,” he said quietly. His gaze remained fixed on me. “This… is fate.” --- My chest tightened. Fate? I didn’t want this. I didn’t choose this. “I didn’t agree to this!” I snapped, my voice shaking. Kael finally looked at me. Really looked. And for a moment— something unreadable flickered in his eyes. “You were never meant to have a choice,” he said. --- Those words hit harder than the bite. Harder than the mark. Harder than everything. --- I took a step back. But the connection— the bond— it pulled. Subtle. Unseen. But there. Tying me to him. Whether I wanted it or not. --- “I was sold,” I said quietly. “And now I’m what?” His expression hardened again. Controlled. King. “You are bound to me.” --- Silence. Heavy. Unavoidable. --- I had entered this palace as a prisoner. Then became a mystery. Now? I was something far worse. Something permanent. Something dangerous. Something that could not be undone. --- And judging by the fear in the council’s eyes— The entire kingdom had just realized it.
