Chapter 21:The best From the Mountains

644 Words
The battlefield fell into complete silence. Even the wounded wolves stopped growling. Every eye turned toward the dark mountains beyond the open field. Another roar echoed across the land. This time— It shook the ground beneath their feet. Alina felt the vibration travel through her body. The silver aura around her flickered, unstable. “What… is that?” she whispered. Kael didn’t answer immediately. His massive Lycan form remained rigid, golden eyes locked onto the distant darkness. Then, quietly— “A nightmare we hoped was gone forever.” Across the battlefield, Magnus turned as well. For the first time since the war began— His confident smile faded. From the shadows between the trees, something enormous moved. Branches snapped. The forest trembled. Then it stepped into the moonlight. Gasps spread through both armies. The creature was massive—easily taller than three wolves standing atop one another. Its body was covered in thick, dark scales that reflected the moonlight like armor. Its claws dug deep into the earth with every step. Its glowing red eyes swept across the battlefield. A jagged tail dragged behind it, carving lines into the ground. Alina’s breath caught. “That’s not a wolf…” One of the royal soldiers whispered, his voice shaking. “It’s a Shadow Beast.” Kael’s growl deepened. The creature opened its jaws and unleashed another deafening roar. The sound tore through the battlefield. Alina clutched her chest as the Moon-Bound power inside her surged violently. The silver light around her flared brighter. Magnus slowly lowered his sword. “Well… this is unexpected.” One of his men stepped closer, fear clear in his voice. “My Alpha… that thing will kill us all.” Magnus didn’t look away from the creature. “No.” His gaze shifted— Toward Alina. “It didn’t come for us.” The Shadow Beast lifted its head and inhaled deeply. Then— Its glowing red eyes locked onto one person. Alina. The creature let out a low, rumbling growl. And began moving toward her. Each step made the ground tremble. Alina’s heart pounded. “Why is it looking at me?” Kael moved instantly, placing himself between her and the advancing beast. His massive form blocked her completely. “You’ll have to go through me first.” The Shadow Beast roared— And charged. The impact when they collided sounded like thunder. Kael was forced backward, claws digging into the ground as he struggled against the creature’s overwhelming strength. Alina gasped. “Kael!” The surrounding warriors rushed forward, attacking from all sides— But their weapons barely left a mark on its scales. The beast swung one massive claw. Wolves were thrown aside like they weighed nothing. Chaos erupted again. Magnus watched carefully. Then muttered under his breath— “So that’s why the prophecy feared her power.” Alina’s silver aura flared violently. The moon above brightened. The light spread across the battlefield. The creature suddenly stopped. Its glowing red eyes fixed on her again. But this time— It didn’t attack. Slowly… It lowered its head. The battlefield froze. Alina’s breathing slowed as the energy inside her shifted. Not wild. Not out of control. Something deeper. Something connected. A realization formed in her mind. The beast hadn’t come to kill her. It had come— Because of her. Kael rose slowly to his feet, dust falling from his fur. His golden eyes moved from the creature… To Alina. Disbelief filled his voice. “The Moon-Bound…” A pause. “You can command it.” The Shadow Beast lifted its head and roared toward the sky. The sound echoed across the mountains. And in that moment— Everyone understood. The war between Kael and Magnus… Was no longer the greatest threat. Something older had awakened. Something far more powerful. And it had chosen Alina.
