Chapter 4: The Pack's Eyes

1087 Words
I barely slept that night. The room they gave me was far larger than any bedroom I had ever seen. Soft carpets covered the floor, and tall windows revealed the dark forest stretching endlessly beyond the castle walls. But comfort meant nothing when your entire life had just been turned upside down. I sat on the edge of the enormous bed, staring at the moonlight spilling across the floor. Mate. The word still echoed in my mind. The Lycan King had said I smelled like a mate. But that was impossible. Humans didn’t become mates to Lycans. Everyone knew that. At least… that was what I had always believed. A sudden knock on the door startled me. “Come in,” I said hesitantly. The door opened slowly, and a young maid stepped inside carrying a tray of food. She looked nervous. Very nervous. Her eyes flickered toward me with curiosity before quickly lowering again. “Your breakfast,” she said softly. I hadn’t even realized morning had come. The sunlight outside had replaced the moonlight, filling the room with warm golden light. “Thank you,” I replied. She placed the tray on a small table and stepped back quickly. “His Majesty requests your presence in the main hall.” My stomach tightened immediately. “The King wants to see me?” “Yes.” Her voice dropped slightly. “The entire pack is gathered.” That did not sound good. “Why?” I asked nervously. She shook her head quickly. “I don’t know.” Which meant she probably did know but was too afraid to say it. I sighed quietly. “Alright.” The maid bowed slightly and hurried out of the room. I changed into the clothes they had left for me—a simple dark dress that was far more elegant than anything I owned before. Everything in this place screamed wealth and power. It reminded me again that I didn’t belong here. After taking a deep breath, I stepped out of the room. Two guards were already waiting in the hallway. “Follow us,” one of them said. I nodded silently. They escorted me through the massive castle corridors again. This time I noticed more details: large portraits on the walls, ancient weapons displayed in glass cases, and guards standing at attention every few meters. This place was built like a fortress. Eventually we reached the main hall. The doors were enormous—at least three times my height. One of the guards pushed them open. The moment I stepped inside, dozens of eyes turned toward me. My heart nearly stopped. The hall was filled with Lycans. Men and women stood in groups across the massive room, their powerful builds and sharp gazes making them look more like warriors than ordinary people. And every single one of them was staring at me. Whispers immediately spread through the crowd. “That’s the human.” “The one the King brought.” “Why is she here?” I swallowed nervously. This was worse than I expected. Far worse. At the far end of the hall stood the Lycan King. He sat casually on a large throne carved from dark wood, one arm resting against the armrest. Even surrounded by dozens of powerful Lycans, he still commanded the entire room effortlessly. His golden eyes lifted the moment I entered. They locked onto mine instantly. The whispers grew louder. The guards guided me forward through the crowd. Every step felt heavier than the last. The Lycans parted slowly as we passed, watching me with curiosity… and suspicion. When I finally reached the front of the hall, the guards stepped aside. Leaving me alone. Completely exposed in front of the entire pack. The Lycan King leaned forward slightly. “Good morning,” he said calmly. I forced myself to answer. “Good morning… Your Majesty.” A faint smile touched his lips. The pack watched silently. Then he stood. The movement alone commanded instant attention. The entire room fell quiet. “This,” he announced, gesturing toward me, “is Alina.” Hearing my name echo through the hall felt strange. “She will be staying in the castle.” The room exploded with murmurs. “A human?” “Why?” “This is ridiculous.” My cheeks burned under the intense attention. One tall Lycan stepped forward from the crowd. His expression was clearly displeased. “Your Majesty,” he said respectfully, though his tone carried doubt. “Yes, Marcus?” the King replied calmly. Marcus glanced at me with obvious disapproval. “Why is a human allowed inside the pack’s home?” The tension in the room thickened. Everyone waited for the King’s answer. The Lycan King’s golden eyes shifted briefly toward me again. Then he spoke. “Because I said so.” The simple answer carried enough authority to silence most of the room. But Marcus still looked uneasy. “With respect, Your Majesty… humans are not part of the pack.” “I’m aware.” “Then why—” Before Marcus could finish, something unexpected happened. A sudden wave of energy filled the room. I felt it immediately. It was powerful. Wild. Dangerous. The Lycan King’s expression had changed. His golden eyes were glowing brighter now. And suddenly… a low growl escaped his chest. The sound froze everyone in place. Even Marcus stepped back slightly. The King’s gaze remained locked on me. His wolf was reacting. I could feel it somehow. The room fell completely silent. Even the air felt heavy. The Lycan King slowly stepped down from the throne platform. Each step echoed across the hall. He walked directly toward me. My heart raced. “What’s happening?” I whispered. But no one answered. The Lycans watched nervously as their king stopped directly in front of me. His eyes burned with intense emotion now. Possessiveness. Confusion. And something deeper. Something primal. He leaned slightly closer. And once again… He inhaled my scent. A deep rumble vibrated through his chest. Then he said the one thing that made the entire room erupt into chaos. “She smells like my mate.” Gasps echoed through the hall. Shock filled every face. Marcus stared at the King in disbelief. “That’s impossible!” But the King’s voice was absolute when he answered. “My wolf does not lie.” And suddenly… Every Lycan in the room was staring at me like I had just changed their entire world.
