Chapter 3:The Impossible Scent

The Lycan King continued staring at me as if I were some kind of puzzle. “You,” he repeated slowly. My confusion only deepened. “Yes… me,” I said carefully. “But what about me?” His golden eyes narrowed slightly. “That scent.” Again with the scent. “I’m just human,” I insisted. “No,” he said quietly. The word sent a strange chill through my body. “You may believe that,” he continued, “but my wolf says otherwise.” My heart skipped. His wolf? Every supernatural creature had an inner beast, but Lycans were known to be the strongest of them all. Their wolves were powerful, ancient, and incredibly instinctive. If his wolf was reacting to me… That couldn’t be good. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said quickly. For a moment he remained silent. Then he suddenly grabbed my wrist. The unexpected contact made me gasp. His grip was firm but not painful. Still, the heat of his touch made my pulse race. He pulled me slightly closer, studying my face again. “You’re afraid,” he observed. “Well… yes,” I admitted. “Good.” My eyes widened. “Good?” “Yes,” he said calmly. “Fear keeps people honest.” That didn’t exactly make me feel better. The room suddenly felt smaller with him standing so close. His golden eyes searched mine again. And once again he leaned closer. My heart hammered loudly in my chest. This time his nose brushed slightly against my hair as he inhaled deeply. My breath caught. He froze. Something had changed. I could feel it immediately. His body went completely still. His eyes widened slightly. And for the first time since I arrived… The ruthless Lycan King looked shocked. “What is it?” I asked nervously. He didn’t answer. Instead, he released my wrist slowly and stepped back. His expression had become serious. Almost troubled. “That’s impossible,” he muttered under his breath. My stomach twisted. “What’s impossible?” His gaze snapped back to me. “You should not smell like that.” My patience began to wear thin. “Like what?” Silence. For several seconds he simply stared at me again. Then he said something that made my heart stop. “You smell like a mate.” The word echoed loudly in my mind. Mate. I blinked in confusion. “I think you’re mistaken.” He shook his head immediately. “My wolf never makes mistakes.” My pulse quickened. “But I’m human.” “Yes,” he said slowly. “That’s the problem.” My confusion grew worse. “Why is that a problem?” “Because Lycans don’t mate with humans.” The seriousness in his voice made the situation feel far more complicated than I had realized. “So… what does that mean?” I asked carefully. His gaze remained fixed on me. “I don’t know.” That answer did not comfort me. Not at all. A heavy silence settled over the room. Finally he walked back toward the window again, his expression thoughtful. “This doesn’t make sense,” he said quietly. “What doesn’t?” “My wolf is reacting to you.” I hugged my arms around myself nervously. “And that’s bad?” “It’s… unusual.” That wasn’t exactly reassuring. He turned again. “Tell me about your parents.” The sudden question caught me off guard. “My parents?” “Yes.” I hesitated. “My mother died when I was young.” His expression softened slightly. “And your father?” “He remarried.” “Your stepmother.” I nodded. “She never liked me very much.” The corner of his mouth twitched slightly. “That much is obvious.” His bluntness made me sigh. “You’re not wrong.” He studied me again carefully. “Your mother,” he continued, “was she human?” “Yes.” “And your father?” “Yes.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “You’re certain?” “Of course I am.” The way he was questioning my identity made me uncomfortable. Why would it matter? “I grew up like any normal human,” I added. “I never had any special abilities or anything strange happen.” He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he continued watching me closely. Then he spoke again. “You may not be as human as you believe.” My heart skipped. “That’s ridiculous.” “Is it?” “Yes.” He crossed his arms, still looking thoughtful. “My wolf is rarely wrong.” I rubbed my temples slightly. “This is crazy.” “Perhaps.” His calm attitude only made things worse. “But until I understand what you are…” I froze. “What I am?” His eyes glowed faintly. “You’re staying here.” “I already figured that part out.” His lips curved slightly. “But now you have my full attention.” Something about the way he said that made my stomach twist. “Should I be worried about that?” His smirk returned. “Yes.” The answer came far too quickly. Before I could respond, a sudden knock echoed against the massive doors. The Lycan King’s expression immediately hardened. “Enter.” The doors opened and the silver-haired warrior from earlier stepped inside. He bowed respectfully. “Your Majesty.” “What is it, Adrian?” the King asked. “The northern patrol has returned.” “And?” “They captured one of the rogues.” The atmosphere in the room instantly shifted. The King’s golden eyes darkened dangerously. “A rogue in my territory?” “Yes, Your Majesty.” The King looked irritated. “Bring him to the dungeon.” Adrian nodded. “And the girl?” he asked, glancing briefly at me. The King’s gaze returned to me again. For a moment, his expression softened slightly. Then he spoke. “Prepare a room for her.” My eyes widened. “A room?” “Yes.” “You’re not locking me in a dungeon?” His eyebrow lifted. “Should I?” “No!” His smirk returned again. “You’re a guest here.” “A very unwilling guest.” “Still a guest.” I sighed quietly. Adrian nodded again. “It will be done, Your Majesty.” The Lycan King turned back toward the window. “And Adrian…” “Yes?” “Make sure she is treated properly.” Adrian looked surprised. “As you wish.” When the doors closed again, silence returned to the room. I slowly looked at the Lycan King. “Why are you being nice to me?” He didn’t turn around. “I’m not.” “That sounded pretty nice.” His voice was calm when he replied. “You’re simply too interesting to mistreat.” That answer somehow made me feel even more uneasy. Because the way he looked at me now… Was no longer the way a king looked at a prisoner. It was the way a wolf looked at something it had decided to claimed
