Chapter 2: The King interest

1233 Words
“You smell… interesting.” The Lycan King’s voice was low and dangerous, like the quiet rumble before a storm. A chill ran through my body. His golden eyes remained fixed on me, studying me in a way that made my heart pound painfully inside my chest. I could barely breathe under the intensity of his gaze. I had heard many terrifying stories about the Lycan King. They said he was ruthless. Merciless. A monster who ruled with absolute dominance. But none of those stories prepared me for the overwhelming presence of the man standing before me now. He was tall—much taller than I expected—with broad shoulders and powerful muscles that strained against his dark uniform. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, and his sharp jawline gave him the appearance of a warrior carved from stone. Everything about him radiated power. Dangerous power. And yet his attention was entirely focused on me. The silence in the room stretched painfully long. Finally, he spoke again. “Look at me.” My eyes had unconsciously fallen to the floor, but his command forced my gaze back up. The moment our eyes met again, I felt trapped. Those golden eyes were unlike anything I had ever seen. Predatory. Dominant. Like a wolf watching its prey. He stepped closer. My heart skipped a beat. Every instinct in my body screamed at me to run. But I couldn’t move. His presence alone was enough to freeze me in place. “You’re human,” he said calmly. It wasn’t a question. “Yes,” I answered softly. He circled me slowly, like a predator examining something unusual. The movement made my nerves tighten. “You don’t belong in my territory.” His voice was calm, but there was something dangerous beneath it. I swallowed nervously. “I didn’t choose to come here.” For a moment, I thought I had angered him. But instead, the corner of his lips lifted slightly. A small, amused smirk. “No,” he said. “I suppose you didn’t.” He stopped directly in front of me again. Our height difference forced me to tilt my head up to meet his gaze. “Your family sold you willingly.” The bluntness of his words made my chest tighten. I hated how easily he said it. As if my life had no value. “They had no choice,” I whispered. He raised an eyebrow. “No choice?” His voice carried faint disbelief. I nodded slowly. “They owed a debt.” His eyes darkened slightly. “So they paid it with you.” The truth of that statement hurt more than I expected. But I forced myself to stay calm. “Yes.” The room fell silent again. For a moment, the Lycan King simply stared at me. Then something unexpected happened. He leaned closer. Too close. My breath caught in my throat. His face hovered inches from mine as he inhaled slowly, his golden eyes narrowing. The action confused me. “Strange,” he murmured. “What is?” I asked nervously. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, his gaze studied my face with unsettling intensity. “You don’t smell like a normal human.” My stomach dropped. “I… don’t understand.” Neither did he, apparently. His expression became thoughtful. Then he suddenly stepped back. “Leave us.” The guards immediately bowed their heads. “Yes, Your Majesty.” Within seconds, they exited the room, closing the massive doors behind them. The loud echo of the doors shutting made my heart race faster. Now we were alone. Completely alone. Panic flickered through my mind. I was trapped inside a giant castle with the most feared creature in the supernatural world. And there was no one to help me. The Lycan King walked back toward the large window overlooking the forest. Moonlight poured into the room, casting shadows across his face. “Do you know why you’re here?” he asked without turning around. I hesitated. “You bought me.” His shoulders shifted slightly. “That’s the simple explanation.” My confusion grew. “What’s the other explanation?” He turned slowly. His golden eyes glowed faintly in the moonlight. “Politics.” I blinked. “Politics?” “Yes.” He crossed the room again, his expression calm. “Your family’s territory borders mine.” I nodded slowly. “I know.” “Recently,” he continued, “some of my enemies have begun moving closer to that border.” A cold realization crept into my mind. “So… I’m a peace offering?” He tilted his head slightly. “Something like that.” The humiliation stung. My own family had given me away just to protect themselves. The Lycan King watched my reaction carefully. “You’re angry.” “Wouldn’t you be?” I asked quietly. His expression remained unreadable. “Anger is useless.” Easy for him to say. He was the king. He held all the power. Meanwhile, I had lost everything. My home. My family. My freedom. “You’re not a prisoner here,” he said suddenly. I looked at him skeptically. “Really?” “Yes.” His voice was firm. “You’re under my protection.” Protection. The word felt strange. “But I can’t leave,” I said. “No,” he agreed calmly. “So that sounds a lot like being a prisoner.” For a moment, silence filled the room again. Then, unexpectedly, the Lycan King laughed. A deep, amused sound. The reaction shocked me. “I like you,” he said. My eyes widened. “You do?” “Yes.” He studied me with growing interest. “Most humans would be trembling by now.” I shrugged slightly. “I’m still deciding whether you’re going to kill me.” His smile widened. “I’m not going to kill you.” Relief washed through me, though it was quickly replaced by another concern. “Then what are you going to do with me?” His golden eyes gleamed. “That depends.” “On what?” “On you.” My confusion deepened. “What does that mean?” He stepped closer again. Too close. The air between us felt charged with something dangerous. Something powerful. “You’re not what I expected.” “And what did you expect?” I asked carefully. “A weak, frightened girl.” I crossed my arms. “I am frightened.” “Yes,” he admitted. “But you’re still standing.” That seemed to impress him. Which confused me even more. Then his expression changed. His gaze darkened as he leaned closer again. Once again, he inhaled slowly. My heart pounded violently. “There it is again,” he murmured. “What?” “That scent.” My confusion grew. “What scent?” His golden eyes locked onto mine. “You.” The way he said it made my stomach twist nervously. “I don’t understand.” Neither did he. But something about me clearly intrigued him. And that realization was both terrifying… and strangely comforting. Because for the first time since arriving here, the ruthless Lycan King wasn’t looking at me like a prisoner. He was looking at me like a mystery he intended to solve. And somehow… that felt even more dangerous.
