Chapter 12: The Challenge of the Alpha

598 Words
The courtyard outside the palace was thick with tension. Rebel wolves stood behind their leader, their eyes locked on the balcony above. Flames from shattered torches flickered wildly, casting long, shifting shadows across the battlefield. At the center of it all stood Magnus. The rebel Alpha rested his sword against his shoulder, a slow, confident smile spreading across his face. “Come out, little queen,” he called mockingly. “Or is the great Lycan King hiding you?” Inside the palace, Alina stood near the balcony doors, her heart pounding. Every word echoed in her chest. Kael stepped in front of her, blocking her path. “You are not going out there,” he said firmly. Alina looked up at him. “But he’s calling me out.” “He’s baiting you,” Kael replied. “And you’re walking straight into his trap.” Frustration flashed in her eyes. “And what happens if I keep hiding behind you?” she shot back. “The entire kingdom already thinks I’m the reason this war started.” Kael’s expression darkened. “You are not responsible for Magnus’ rebellion.” “But I am part of the prophecy,” Alina said quietly. Silence stretched between them. Then slowly— She pulled her wrist free. “I’m not running anymore.” Before Kael could stop her, she stepped out onto the balcony. A wave of murmurs spread across the courtyard. Magnus’ grin widened instantly. “Well… the mysterious human finally shows herself.” Alina forced herself to stand tall, gripping the railing. “You wanted to see me,” she called down. “Now you have.” Magnus began walking forward, his boots echoing across the stone. “Interesting,” he said, studying her closely. “You don’t look like someone capable of shaking an entire battlefield.” Alina’s grip tightened. “I didn’t do it on purpose.” Magnus’ smile deepened. “That makes it far more dangerous.” He stopped directly below her. “Power without control,” he continued, “is the deadliest weapon of all.” Before Alina could respond, Kael stepped beside her. His presence alone shifted the atmosphere. Magnus laughed. “There he is—the mighty king guarding his fragile little mate.” A low growl escaped Kael. “Leave now, Magnus,” he said coldly. “Or this rebellion ends tonight.” Magnus tilted his head slightly. “You think I came all this way just to talk?” He raised his sword, pointing it toward Alina. “I came to prove your throne is weak.” The rebel wolves behind him growled in agreement. “Let her come down,” Magnus continued. “Let the Moon-Bound Queen face me.” Kael’s voice dropped dangerously low. “That will never happen.” Magnus shrugged. “Then the war continues.” Without warning— He moved. Fast. Rebel wolves surged forward, charging toward the palace gates. Chaos erupted once again. Kael turned sharply. “Stay inside,” he ordered. But as he prepared to leap back into the battlefield— Alina froze. That feeling again. Warm. Powerful. Uncontrollable. Her breath hitched. Her hands began to glow faintly. “Oh no…” Below, Magnus saw it immediately. His eyes lit up with excitement. “So… it awakens again.” Kael spun around. “ALINA! STOP!” But it was already too late. The light around her hands intensified, swirling like a living force. Stronger than before. Wilder. And this time— Every wolf in the courtyard felt it. The Moon-Bound power… Was rising again.
