Zoe slipped out of bed, leaving Lorna sleeping. She’d slept too, after they made love. But at almost four A.M., she’d woken. She knew why. She’d decided something. She grabbed some sweatpants and a hoodie and stepped outside the motel room, leaving the door open slightly. There was a wooden walkway outside it that ran around the square of motel cabins. The SUV stood parked a short distance away. Zoe sat on the edge of the walkway. From her pocket she took her cell phone and the postcard with the number and e-mail address. She wasn’t sure what the time would be where Eloise was. She didn’t much care. The phone rang a few times, and Zoe feared it would go to message. She’d hang up if it did.
