Lorna woke early. Too early to get up, but she was too restless to stay in bed. She rose carefully so as not to disturb Zoe. Zoe moved into the middle of the bed but didn’t wake and went still again. Lorna put on a shirt and padded quietly to the bathroom. When she came back out, she figured she might as well get something done. It was a couple of hours before Zoe would be likely to wake up, once it got light out. Lorna opened the laptop and dealt with a bunch of e-mails.
Jeff had sent one. He seemed calmer than in the last one, but perhaps bitter. She didn’t want him to stay that way.
Where are you? You’re not on Long Island yet, I know that. Are you with someone? You can still come back. We’ll tell people you had to go to deal with your aunt’s estate. Nobody has to know.
