Chapter One
"How long do you think you can keep running from this, Emma?" Jason’s voice sliced through the tension in the room, his words biting as he leaned against the doorframe. Emma’s fingers fidgeted over the stack of bills, her eyes tracing the unforgiving red ink stamped across each one. Disconnection notices, overdue payments, a final warning from the bank — it was all piling up, and there was no escape. "Do you think I don’t know that?" she snapped, her voice brittle from days of sleepless nights. She wasn’t angry at Jason; she was angry at herself, at the weight pressing down on her chest. "I’m trying, Jason. I’m doing everything I can." Her brother sighed, stepping further into the room, his shoulders slumping with the kind of exhaustion Emma was all too familiar with. "Everything isn’t enough anymore, Em. The bank’s going to take the house." Emma pressed her palms to her face, trying to shut out the cold reality that had been creeping closer and closer with each passing day. She had been treading water for months, doing whatever she could to keep her family afloat. Since her father’s death, they had been drowning in debt, barely able to keep the roof over their heads. She worked double shifts at the diner, picked up freelance art commissions whenever she could, but it was never enough. The walls were closing in, and now the home that held every memory of her father, the home she grew up in, was about to be ripped from them. "I’ll figure something out." Her voice wavered as she stared down at the bills again, as if sheer will alone would make them disappear. She hated how weak she sounded, how helpless. "I just need a little more time." Jason’s eyes softened, though the frustration was still there, simmering beneath the surface. "You’re out of time, Em. We both are." She bit her lip, hard enough to taste blood, but she didn’t cry. Not anymore. She had used up all her tears months ago. Now all that was left was the weight of responsibility bearing down on her, the constant pressure to be strong for everyone else. Her brother’s voice softened, almost apologetic. "I talked to someone. Someone who can help." Emma’s head snapped up, eyes wide. "Who?" Jason shifted uncomfortably, his gaze dropping to the floor. "Damien Thorne." The name fell into the room like a heavy stone, making Emma’s stomach churn. For a moment, she was sure she had misheard him. "What did you just say?" "Damien Thorne," Jason repeated, as if the name itself didn’t carry enough weight already. "He—" "You went to Damien Thorne?" Emma’s voice rose with disbelief as she stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "Are you out of your mind, Jason?" Jason raised his hands in defense, his expression pained. "I didn’t know what else to do! We’re desperate, Emma. You know that." "Desperate doesn’t mean going to him!" Emma snapped, her heart pounding in her chest. Damien Thorne was the last person on earth she wanted involved in their lives. Cold, calculating, ruthless — the man was a walking power play. He owned half the city and crushed anyone who stood in his way. She had heard the stories, the rumors about his business dealings, how he never left a deal without taking more than what was offered. Her voice trembled as she pressed her hands to the table, leaning forward as if to make Jason understand. "What does he want in return?" Jason hesitated, his eyes flickering with guilt. "He… wants to talk to you." Emma felt the world tilt beneath her feet. "To me? Why?" "I don’t know," Jason admitted, his voice laced with uncertainty. "But he said he could help us. If anyone can fix this, Emma, it’s him." Emma’s mind raced. The last thing she wanted was to be involved with someone like Damien Thorne, but Jason was right. They were out of time. Out of options. The towering glass structure of Thorne Enterprises loomed above her, casting long shadows across the busy city streets. Emma stared up at the sleek, imposing building, every instinct telling her to turn around and run. She didn’t belong here. Not in a world of billionaires, power brokers, and ruthless businessmen like Damien Thorne. With a deep breath, she walked through the revolving doors, past the polished marble floors and the sleek receptionist who barely glanced at her. Every step felt heavier than the last as she rode the elevator up to the top floor, her heart thudding in her chest. This was a mistake. She should never have agreed to this meeting. The doors slid open with a soft ding, and Emma was escorted into a sprawling office that screamed power and wealth. Dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the city, and behind an impossibly large desk sat Damien Thorne himself. He looked every bit the mogul she had imagined — tall, impeccably dressed, with sharp, unreadable eyes that seemed to take in everything and reveal nothing. “Miss Carter,” Damien’s voice was smooth, calculated, as cold as the city skyline behind him. “Sit.” It wasn’t a request. It was an order. Emma swallowed her nerves and sat down, her eyes flickering to his face, searching for any hint of humanity in his expression. But there was none. He was as unreadable as ever, his piercing gaze settling on her as if she were just another deal to be made. “You’re here because your brother begged me for a favor,” Damien began, his voice betraying no emotion. “But I don’t do favors. I make deals.” Emma’s hands clenched in her lap, her heart pounding in her chest. “What kind of deal?” Damien leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly. “I need a wife.” The words hung in the air like a bomb waiting to go off. Emma blinked, unsure if she had heard him correctly. "Excuse me?" “A wife,” Damien repeated, his voice unnervingly calm. “You see, my father controls the majority of our family’s assets. And in order for me to secure my place as head of the company, I need to… settle down.” Emma’s breath caught in her throat. "And you think I’m the solution?" Damien’s lips curled into a small, humorless smile. "You need money. I need a wife. It’s simple." Simple. As if he were discussing a business merger and not her life. Emma’s pulse quickened. The audacity of it all — the cold, calculated way he was laying out her future as if it were just another transaction. "I don’t understand," she said, her voice shaking. "Why me?" "Because you’re in a desperate situation," Damien replied, his gaze never wavering. "And desperate people make the best business partners." His words hit her like a punch to the gut. He wasn’t wrong. Desperation had driven her here, had forced her to sit across from him and listen to this absurd proposition. But could she really do it? Could she marry a man she barely knew, a man who saw her as nothing more than a pawn in his power game? Her thoughts spiraled, her mind racing with questions, doubts, fears. This wasn’t just a deal. This was her life. Emma stared at him, feeling her world spin. Marriage? To Damien Thorne? The idea was so absurd it almost made her laugh. But the look in his eyes — cold, calculating, serious — told her everything she needed to know. He wasn’t joking. And he wasn’t giving her much of a choice.
