Chapter 1
My adoptive father, George Gray's face darkened abruptly.
My adoptive mother, Amelia Hart, looked utterly incredulous.
In their eyes, I had been obsessed with power and status since childhood, desperately trying to squeeze my way into the Reed family.
To curry favor with the Reed family, I spent ten whole years studying coffee brewing and high-society etiquette. Isabella Reed loved Northmere pastries, so I would get up before dawn to knead dough and cook the fillings. Daniel Reed had a weak stomach, so every week without fail, I went to the Reed Villa to deliver herbal tonics.
Throughout the entire Gray family, who didn't know that I, Victoria Gray, was determined to win the position of Mrs. Reed?
But now, I actually took the initiative to give this great fortune to Olivia Gray.
Olivia stood awkwardly in place, her hands tightly clutching the hem of her washed-out clothes. A trace of panic flashed through her eyes, followed by a flush of excitement.
George furrowed his brows deeply and rebuked me in a lowered voice, "Victoria, what nonsense are you talking! Mr. Reed came here specially to discuss the engagement details with you! Marriage is a major matter. How dare you treat it as a game!"
My voice was completely steady, "Father, I'm not joking. Olivia is the Gray family's real daughter. I'm nothing but a fake who occupied her identity for twenty years.
"The Reed family is a top-tier wealthy household in Penbrooke's elite circle; marriage alliances emphasize matching social status and noble lineage. As an adopted daughter with no blood relation, I'm truly unworthy of the lofty Mr. Reed."
Amelia sneered upon hearing these words. "You finally have some self-awareness. I thought you actually considered yourself the Gray family's legitimate eldest young lady."
Amelia walked over to Olivia's side and took her hand tenderly. "Olivia has suffered twenty years out in the countryside. She deserves every bit of this. You've stolen everything that was hers. Returning it to its rightful owner is only just."
I lowered my gaze, the pad of my thumb unconsciously rubbing the blood-red jade thumb ring I'd worn around my neck since childhood, the one Amelia had always despised.
George looked troubled and turned to Daniel, seated in the center of the sofa.
Daniel was dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, his demeanor cold and dignified. He was the sole heir to the Reed family, notoriously detached from romance within Penbrooke's elite circles, and had no patience for deceit.
George gave an awkward smile. "Mr. Reed, what do you think about this... Our Victoria has been spoiled and speaks without restraint. But Isabella has always taken a liking to Victoria..."
Daniel slowly set down his coffee cup and lifted his deep gaze at me. "Victoria, is this your decision?"
I met his gaze without the fawning or reserve from my past life. I simply nodded faintly, "Yes. Mr. Reed is a man of such noble character. I'm simply not worthy of you."
Daniel's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly.
