Encounter

The voice was so soft, calm. Too calm. Adriana stood. Luna turned slightly, just enough to face her, not fully, but enough that their proximity shifted from accidental to undeniable. Up close, the details were sharper. Her eyes were clear, steady and observant. Adriana recovered quickly, her expression smoothing into composure. "Should there be?" Luna studied her for a second. Not intimidated. Not impressive, just observing. "You've been following me," she said simply. She was not accusing but stating facts. Adriana tilted her head slightly, a faint smile forming. "Following is a strong word." Luna responded, "Is it?" Then there was a pause. Neither of them looked away. For the first time, the silence between them felt deliberate. Adriana stepped slightly to the side, closing the distance by fractions. "You're interesting." Luna blinked once, as if processing the statement. "Am I"? She asked. Adriana responded, "You don't seem to care about being first." "I don't." The answer came too quickly to be false. Adriana's smile sharpened. "Then why are you?" A beat. Luna's gaze didn't waver. "I could ask you the same thing." That wasn't the answer Adriana expected. Something flickered behind her eyes. Not irritation, something closer to intrigue. "You're avoiding the questions," "And you're not answering yours." A quiet standoff. Equal footing. That, more than anything, was new. Adriana exhaled softly, almost amused. "You're different than I expected." Luna responded. "I didn't know you had expectations." "I didn't." Adriana admitted. "That's the problem." For a moment, neither of them spoke. Students passed by, voices rising and falling around them, but it all fell distant. Irrelevant. Luna shifted her bag slightly on her shoulder. "If that's all, I have somewhere to be." A dismissal, polite, final. Adriana stepped back just enough to let her pass, but Luna paused. Not turning, just stopping. Adriana's gaze remained steady. "That's not how I work." A second passed. Then Luna continued walking. But this time, there was the slightest change in her steps. No hesitation, not quite, but something had registered. Adriana watched her disappear into the crowd, her heart was steady. Her mind, sharp, focused, engaged. For the first time in a long while, something felt unpredictable and she liked it. No, that wasn't right. She didn't like it, she needed it, a challenge. A variable she couldn't immediately solve. Luna Reyes wasn't just a name anymore. She was a problem. One Adriana fully intended to understand and defeat. But as she turned and walked in the opposite direction, one thought lingered uninvited, unwanted. Why didn't she look intimidated? Adriana's grip tightened slightly. "Interesting," she murmured again. But this time the world felt different. Heavier.
