Chapter 1:
Two years later, when I saw Henry again, I was about to ask him why he didn’t come to our initial appointment. He looked at me and then turned to the person next to him, speaking politely and calmly, “Who are you?” Those three simple words almost brought tears to my eyes. As I waited, he forgot me completely. When Olivia Anderson wrote this in her diary that day, she thought that she and Henry Taylor would have no further connection in this life. Who knew that two years later, she would end up living in his home… On the fifth day of Olivia’s stay at Henry’s house, she finally encountered the real Henry. It was late at night, and Olivia was drifting off to sleep, feeling drowsy, when she suddenly sensed someone lying beside her. Her whole body trembled, and she instantly woke up from her dream. The person lying next to her was a man. The dim night light in the room cast a faint glow, making it hard to see the man’s face clearly, but with just one glance, she recognized him as Henry. After two years of not seeing him, suddenly meeting again made Olivia both nervous and dazed. She pretended to stay calm and steady, speaking in a composed tone, “You’re back?” Henry didn’t answer Olivia, nor did he even glance at her. He quickly took off his clothes and turned to press her down beneath him. The heat from his body made Olivia inexplicably fearful. She didn’t expect it to be like this, despite imagining the reunion. Instinctively, she resisted, trying to escape. Henry seemed to find her reaction amusing and let out a bitter laugh before effortlessly restraining her. He grabbed her chin, forcefully lifting it, and leaned close to her ear, speaking each word with disdain. “Why pretend? You went through all this trouble to stay in my house and repeatedly asked Grandpa to let you stay, all so I would sleep with you, right?” Olivia was stunned by his mocking words. While she hesitated, he pulled the blanket covering her, roughly tore her nightgown, and touched her skin with no tenderness. The next morning, when Olivia woke up, Henry was already gone. The aches in her body and the shredded nightgown on the floor were the only evidence that last night wasn’t a nightmare she had imagined. Olivia got out of bed, went to the bathroom to wash up, changed into clean clothes, and went downstairs for breakfast. As she passed the hallway, she habitually glanced over the railing at the living room on the first floor. Henry stood by the window, his back to her, talking on the phone. Olivia instinctively stopped, her mind flashing back to last night’s events. Before she could snap out of it, Henry finished his call. The butler, who had been standing respectfully nearby, spoke up, “Mr. Taylor, the car is ready.” “Okay,” Henry replied indifferently. Olivia, coming to her senses, watched as Henry took the coat handed to him by the butler and walked toward the front door. As he changed his shoes and was about to leave, he paused, as if remembering something. Without looking at the butler, he spoke coldly, “Go buy a box of morning-after pills. When she wakes up, make sure she takes them.” His words were like ice-cold water, dousing Olivia in a harsh reality. Her body trembled, and her mind went blank. Their encounter two years ago involved his question, “Who are you?” was already bad enough. She hadn’t imagined that meeting again two years later would be even worse. Standing by the second-floor railing, Olivia watched Henry’s retreating figure, unable to see clearly how he left the house. She distinctly felt a heaviness in her chest, her heart weighing her down with each painful beat. When she finally regained her composure, she could only hear the faint sound of Henry’s car starting outside. Fearing that the butler might return and see her in this disheveled state, she quickly turned and went back to her room, closing the door behind her. It was only then that she realized her eyes had blurred with unshed tears. Olivia waited until the moisture in her eyes had dried and her emotions had completely settled before pretending to have just woken up and heading downstairs again. When the butler saw her, he immediately stopped what he was doing and respectfully greeted her, “Miss, you’re awake?” The butler was supposed to address her as “Madam,” but Henry had forbidden it, so he could only call her “Miss.” Olivia didn’t mind, calmly replying with a simple “yes” before heading to the dining room. In the past, when Olivia had meals, the butler would bring the dishes and quickly leave. Today, however, the butler stood by the dining table, not moving an inch. Olivia pretended not to notice, calmly and slowly eating her breakfast. When she finished her porridge, the butler, standing nearby, hesitated for a moment before finally mustering the courage to speak, “Miss…” “Do we have any morning-after pill here?” Olivia interrupted him, cutting off what he was about to say. She knew what the butler was going to say next, but hearing it from his mouth would make her feel even more humiliated. Although she understood the butler knew how much Henry despised her, she didn’t want to let anyone see her being ridiculed. Olivia glanced at the butler and coldly added, “If there is, bring it to me.” The butler, surprised by her words, said nothing more and did as she instructed. In front of the butler, Olivia calmly took the pill, then slowly wiped her mouth with a handkerchief before gracefully standing up and leaving the dining room. She had barely taken a few steps when the butler called out from behind her, “Miss…” Olivia stopped and turned around. “Miss, Mr. Taylor said that Mr. Taylor Senior will leave for Hainan tonight…” The butler hesitated for a few seconds before continuing, “Mr. Taylor also said that since you have no support, avoid bothering him if you have nothing urgent.” She had thought that by taking the pill herself, she would regain some dignity. But she hadn’t expected Henry to instruct the butler to relay such hurtful words. Olivia’s fingers trembled slightly, but her face remained impassive, as if the butler’s words had nothing to do with her. She asked calmly, “Anything else?” The butler didn’t reply, and Olivia turned and walked away. It was already one in the morning, and it seemed Henry wouldn’t be coming home tonight. Since he had ordered the butler to make her take the morning-after pill a month ago, he hadn’t returned. That day, when he had instructed the butler to tell her not to bother him, she had taken it to heart. For the past month, they hadn’t seen each other, nor had they exchanged a single phone call. Olivia stared at the clock, lost in thought, before slowly turning back to the TV. Although her favorite actor was in the movie playing on the screen, she wasn’t in the mood to watch. She switched off the TV and went to her room. Perhaps thinking about the time downstairs had made her think of Henry. For now, lying in bed, she couldn’t fall asleep. Even with her eyes closed, her mind wandered for a long time before she finally felt sleepy. Just as she was drifting off, the phone on the bedside table rang. It was Susan, the longtime housekeeper of the Taylor family, calling from the old mansion. Olivia answered, and Susan’s voice came through, “Madam, I’m sorry to call so late. Mr. Taylor Senior called earlier. He said he has returned to Tomaso City this morning and invited you and Mr. Taylor for dinner at the old mansion tonight.” Susan was the only person in the house who dared to call her “Madam” despite Henry’s disapproval. “Don’t forget to inform Mr. Taylor!” Susan added. Remembering Henry’s warning not to bother him, Olivia instinctively wanted to tell Susan to call Henry herself. But before she could say it, she recalled his threat. He had warned her that his grandfather was his only family, and if not for her manipulations, she wouldn’t have been allowed to stay with him. He despised seeing her and wanted her to keep their strained relationship a secret from his grandfather. If his grandfather worried because of her, Henry would make her pay dearly. Thinking this over, Olivia decided not to trouble Susan and instead said, “I understand. I’ll inform Henry.” After hanging up, Olivia leaned back against the bed, hesitating before finally picking up her phone to dial Henry’s number. The phone rang, and Olivia held her breath in anticipation. One hour, two hours, three hours! Before the fourth ring could sound, the call was abruptly cut off without a trace of mercy! Henry had hung up on her! Olivia bit her lip, refraining from calling Henry again. Instead, she composed a text message and sent it to him.
