The Beginning Of Everything
"Aww!"
"Ah, sorry. Are you okay?"
Amanda turned her head, looking at the man who had just stepped on her sandals from behind. Blame Amanda too, who went to a public place wearing oversized sandals.
Amanda nodded, and then smiled. "I'm okay," she said.
Currently, Amanda was waiting in line at a very crowded food stall. It was so crowded, Amanda had to be willing to queue along the Chinese wall. Actually, she was tired, but she was still curious about the taste of the food that had gone viral lately.
"Huaaa..."
Amanda immediately turned her head when she heard the sound of a toddler crying behind her. The man who had stepped on her slipper was struggling to calm the toddler. I don't know where the initiative came from, but Amanda suddenly offered to help the man.
"Can I hold the child?" Amanda asked.
The man seemed to think for a while, as if he was hesitant to hand over his child to Amanda.
Amanda smiled, as if she understood what the man was thinking.
"Don't worry, I'm not a criminal," Amanda said.
The child cried again, making Amanda immediately take over the child from his father's arms.
"Cup... cup. Handsome boy, he's crying already," said Amanda, as she held the boy, who was about one year old.
Miraculously, the boy immediately fell silent and looked at Amanda with his innocent face. Amanda smiled, then pecked the boy's forehead anxiously.
"It's really cute. Her cheeks are chubby, her nose is sharp, her eyes are round, her lips are small. Aunty wants to bite you, kiddo!"
Hearing Amanda's babble, the toddler immediately laughed crisply. It made Amanda even more anxious to see him.
Seeing the interaction between his son and another woman, the man was silent and smiled a little. Many eyes were looking at them, perhaps people thought that they were a happy family.
The man cleared his throat, making Amanda immediately look at him. "Um. You just sit with my son. Let me order the food," he said.
Without thinking, Amanda immediately nodded her head. After all, her legs were already very sore, and the queue was still long. There was no way she could refuse this very lucrative offer.
"What would you like to order?" the man asked.
"The viral ramen and sweet iced tea," Amanda replied.
"Okay, have a seat."
Amanda walked to find an empty seat. The shop had been very busy lately, thanks to its new menu campaign that had caught the public's attention. Not only teenagers, from children to grandmothers also visit this place. Because in addition to the delicious food, this shop also provides a mini play ground and several photo spots that spoil the eyes.
After finding a place that could only seat two people, Amanda immediately sat the child at the table, facing her.
"Is it cold? Didn't you bring a jacket?" Amanda asked.
The child chattered, as if answering Amanda's question. Making Amanda chuckle as she pinched the child's cheek lightly.
"So cute, geez!"
The night air was indeed very cold. Amanda was surprised at the man, who had the audacity to bring his child to a public place like this at night.
Fifteen minutes later, the man came over to Amanda and her son. He was carrying a tray of ice that they had ordered.
"Ramen yet?" Amanda asked.
"Not yet. It will be delivered later," he replied. He sat himself down on the chair in front of Amanda.
"Here. With Papa," said the man, lifting his son from the table.
But unexpectedly, the child immediately cried loudly when he was on his father's lap.
Hurrying Amanda immediately took over, making the man immediately grunt in annoyance.
"Hey, already sweetheart! Cup... cup," Amanda said as she held the child, trying to continue to calm him down.
In an instant, the child fell silent and went back to babbling while playing with Amanda's hair. It made Amanda chuckle, this toddler on her lap was really cute and adorable. She wanted to take him home and adopt him as her son.
Meanwhile, the man was just silent watching their interaction. Staring at Amanda with an unusual gaze.
"What's your name?" the man asked matter-of-factly.
Amanda stopped her laughter, then turned to look at the man.
"Amanda," Amanda replied briefly.
"How old?"
"24."
"Already working?"
Amanda just nodded. Then she went back to joking with the boy.
One week ago, Amanda had just been hired by the Food World Company. A large company engaged in the food sector. She works as a "Public Relations", whose job is to build and maintain the company's good image by conducting publicity campaigns.
In addition, Amanda also has several responsibilities ranging from, planning campaign strategies, producing presentations for press releases, to organizing and attending several events, such as promotions, press conferences, exhibitions and company visits.
"Do you like children?" the man asked again.
Again Amanda just nodded. She was too busy playing with the child.
Feeling neglected, the man chose to open his cell phone. Then shortly after, the food he ordered arrived.
"Two ramen and two dimsum, sir, ma'am," said the shop assistant, placing their food on the table.
"Thank you ma'am," Amanda replied.
"You just eat. I'll take Gavin," the man said, taking over the child. Fortunately, the child didn't cry anymore when he was in his father's lap.
"Oh, his name is Gavin. I forgot, I didn't ask for his name," Amanda said, chuckling softly.
"By the way, isn't Gavin's mom coming?" asked Amanda, only to be shaken by the man who was still focused on his cell phone.
"Is it okay if we eat together like this? I'm afraid I'll be mistaken for a harlot."
Now it was Amanda's turn to continue babbling. Making the man a little furious, because Amanda had not yet eaten her food.
"Eat first, your ramen!"
Amanda pursed her lips. Then immediately ate her ramen with gusto. She had been craving this food for a long time. Seeing the many influencers promoting this food, made Amanda very tempted and wanted to taste it immediately. Luckily tonight she had some free time to visit this very crowded shop.
After finishing her meal, Amanda returned to pick up Gavin who was wailing, asking to be carried by Amanda.
"Gavin, why didn't you bring a jacket? It's really cold," Amanda said.
"I left it in the car," said the man.
"That's too bad. What if you catch a cold?" asked Amanda.
"Take some medicine," replied the man lightly.
Amanda chuckled in annoyance. What kind of father doesn't care about his child's health. If it wasn't in a public place, Amanda would have cursed him out.
Amanda then took off the cardigan she was wearing, leaving a dress with shoulder-length sleeves. Then she wrapped it around Gavin's small body.
The man continued to look at Amanda with an unusual gaze. The sharp look in his eyes made Amanda a little uncomfortable. She covered her exposed shoulder when his eyes turned to stare at her bare shoulder.
"Ah, sorry. I feel sorry for Gavin, that's why I took off the cardigan," Amanda said, smiling awkwardly.
"No problem. Aren't you cold?"
Amanda shook her head with a smile. "The important thing is that Gavin is comfortable," she replied.
The man cleared his throat, then said something that made Amanda a little surprised.
"Um. So, I need a babysitter. Do you want to be a babysitter for Gavin? I'll pay you double the salary of your current job," the man said.
Without hesitation, Amanda immediately shook her head while smiling sweetly. There was no way she could give up the job she had aspired to, just to become a babysitter for a rich man's son. The salary offered by the man was nothing compared to Amanda's struggle so far. Even though the amount was much higher than her current salary, Amanda wasn't interested. Because for now, Amanda still really loves her job.
She struggled so hard to get where she is now. It's impossible, right, if she just let go? Unless the man offered a salary of 100 million per month, Amanda would not think twice.
"Sorry. But my job is more valuable," Amanda refused.
"Where do you work?"
"At a food company."
"How much is the salary?"
"Five million per month."
"I'll triple your salary."
Again Amanda shook her head with a smile.
"Four times?" the man asked again.
"Why are you being so pushy? There are still a lot of babysitters out there who need work," Amanda was annoyed.
"Gavin is already comfortable with you."
"Sorry, sir. I can't."
"Isn't money more important than work? Just give up your job, and accept my offer," the man coaxed, making Amanda immediately look at him disapprovingly.
She had worked hard on journals, proposals, and theses in college, in order to get a degree that could lead her to her current company. But so easily, this strange man told her to give up the job she loved so much.
The man then took out an ID card from his pocket, and handed it to Amanda. On the ID card was the name "Jeffrey Antonio" along with his phone number, email and home address. Under his name, the title "President Director" was written. But there was no mention of the company he worked for.
"Call me if you're interested," the man said, taking over Gavin who had fallen asleep on Amanda's lap.
"Thank you for the offer, Mr. Jeffrey. But I'm sorry, I really can't," Amanda replied with a smile. Then she returned the card to its owner.
"Just keep it with you. Who knows, you might need it later," Jeffrey said with a flat face.
Amanda let out a rough breath. It was exhausting, dealing with a stubborn person like this.
"I'm going home first," Jeffrey said, to which Amanda only nodded.
After Jeffrey left. Amanda massaged her forehead, which was suddenly dizzy. Meeting a man as handsome and gallant as Jeffrey, of course, made Amanda's heart tremble a little. Honestly, she was fascinated by the man's good looks, and she often stole glances to see the perfect sculptures on Jeffrey's face. But remembering that the man already had a child, Amanda pushed her feelings away. She didn't want to fall for a married man.
Amanda put the ID card into her bag. She had to go home now, and she had to get some sleep. Because tomorrow morning there was a press conference scheduled with the company's top brass.
"Amanda..." Amanda, who was waiting for public transportation, immediately turned her head towards the source of the voice. And how surprised she was, when she realized who the person who had just called her was.
