THE LAST EMBER CROWN 1
Chapter 1: The Village of Ashes
The morning sun painted the rooftops of Ashvale in shades of gold. Smoke drifted lazily from stone chimneys, children laughed as they chased one another through the narrow streets, and the rhythmic clang of hammers echoed from the village forge.
Kael Ashryn wiped sweat from his brow as he struck a glowing piece of iron. At seventeen, he was known as the quiet apprentice blacksmith. While others dreamed of becoming soldiers or mages, Kael was content making horseshoes and farming tools.
"You've been staring at the mountains all morning," old Master Rowan said with a smile. "Looking for adventure?"
Kael chuckled. "No... just wondering what's beyond them."
Rowan laughed. "Sometimes what's beyond the mountains is better left unseen."
Those words lingered in Kael's mind.
That evening, Ashvale celebrated the annual Ember Festival. Lanterns floated into the sky like tiny stars, music filled the village square, and families danced around great bonfires.
Kael stood apart from the crowd, watching the glowing embers drift into the night.
Suddenly...
One ember stopped in midair.
Then another.
The wind disappeared.
Silence fell over the village.
A deep roar echoed across the valley.
The ground shook violently.
People screamed.
From the darkness beyond the mountains emerged enormous shadow creatures with glowing crimson eyes. Their bodies looked like living smoke wrapped around black armor, and wherever they walked, flowers withered and trees turned to ash.
"The Hollowborn..." whispered Rowan, his face drained of color.
"They're real."
The village bell rang frantically.
"Run!" someone shouted.
Chaos erupted.
Homes burst into flames.
The village guards charged bravely, but their swords passed straight through the monsters as if they were cutting smoke.
One by one, they fell.
Kael searched desperately for his master.
"Master Rowan!"
Before Rowan could answer, a Hollowborn raised a massive claw.
"No!" Kael screamed.
The creature struck.
Rowan was thrown across the square.
He looked at Kael one last time.
"Run... Kael..."
His voice faded.
Tears blurred Kael's vision.
Anger consumed him.
He grabbed a blacksmith's hammer and rushed toward the monster.
"You took everything from me!"
The Hollowborn laughed—a cold, hollow sound that echoed through the burning village.
The creature swung its claw.
Kael closed his eyes.
Then...
A searing pain shot through his right hand.
A blazing ember-shaped mark appeared on his palm.
The ground exploded with golden fire.
A wave of brilliant light swept across the village, throwing every Hollowborn backward.
For a heartbeat, the world stood still.
Even the flames seemed frozen.
The monsters stared at Kael in shock.
One of them whispered in a voice older than time,
"It cannot be..."
"The Ember Bearer lives."
Before Kael could understand what had happened, the earth beneath him cracked open.
A blinding pillar of crimson and gold light shot into the heavens, visible for miles across the kingdom.
Far away, in ancient castles, forgotten temples, and hidden fortresses, powerful rulers looked toward the sky.
They all spoke the same words.
"The Last Ember Crown has awakened."
Kael fell to his knees, staring at the glowing mark on his hand as the village burned around him.
His ordinary life had ended.
And a war older than history had just begun.
