LUCENT
There was a soft knock at the door and I winced at the sound. I felt like I had a hangover but I knew I wasn’t drinking last night. I should have been well rested.
Whoever was at the door they weren’t leaving. I padded over to the door and shivered as I glowered at the fire. It had gone out at some point during the night.
I hoped it wasn’t that guy again. I never asked his name. Why did I bother not to ask his name?
A young boy was standing outside my door and he looked like a younger version of the woman I met last night.
“Are you related to Amka?” His eyes went wide and he shook his head, then he frowned. He took a pad out of his bag and wrote something down.
“Sorry, I can’t speak. Yes, Amka is my sister.” I nodded and let out a sigh of relief, thank goodness all those long hours of boredom paid off.
I started to sign to him and he grinned, he was missing a front tooth and I wanted to hug him.
Amka said I should take you to the dining hall. I nodded and then looked down at my pajamas.
What is your name?
Uki, means survivor.
It was a lovely name and I guessed he wanted to get to breakfast right away. I motioned for him to come in and he shook his head.
Let me throw on a sweatshirt, it is just too cold up here for me. He gave me a strange look and I wrapped my arms around myself, I already had two sweatshirts on.
I am not used to the cold. Please wait for me. He let out a laugh and I grinned at him. I disappeared back into the room and threw on a hoody that when I put it up gave me kitty ears.
I didn’t bother brushing my hair, I just put it in a bun and pulled my hood up.
Uki saw my hoodie and started laughing again.
Meow Meow, that is a cute hoodie. I think Cadence will like it. I tried not to frown and ruin the mood.
We left my room and went down the hall and back out to the entranceway. I tried to remember the way to the dining room so I wouldn’t need an escort all the time.
We came to a large room with chandeliers made out of deer antlers. A huge river stone fireplace occupied one wall and was flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows.
Sven was seated at the table, Amka, and a few other faces. Then I laid eyes on him and he was sitting next to Amka. The man that keeps giving me an attitude problem. Maybe I will finally learn his name.
Uki grabbed my hand and led me to two seats across from Amka and the man. He glanced up at me and narrowed his eyes. I ignored him and turned to Uki.
Will there be anyone else joining us? Also are there any customs I should know about how you guys eat?
He glanced at me and gave me a strange look. I guess I should explain to him that in the fae court we had to wait for the Queen and Prince to be served and then they needed to be halfway done with their food before the rest of us could start eating.
Sorry, where I’m from we have to wait until those who are in charge are halfway done and we aren’t allowed to talk or even look at one another. His eyes were wide.
Your home sounds like it is horrible. There are not that many rules here. He grabbed a plate and started heaping it with eggs and bacon. Then he poured himself some orange juice and tucked into his food.
“Thank you for joining us Lucent. I trust you slept well?” I glanced at Sven and saw he was even frailer looking. His veins were a sickly blue-green color and his skin was tinged yellow. I could still see that sickness in him.
“I had a rough start to the night but Amka was kind enough to show me how to start a fire. Sadly I don’t think the heat is working well in my room.” I put some eggs on my plate and then put some French toast and waffles on my plate.
Wolf boy was staring at me with his mouth open and Amka was playing with the food on his plate. I drenched the French toast and waffles in butter and gravy.
“That is unfortunate. I will have someone look into it for you. I apologize.” I waved him off and continued to shovel food into my mouth while wolf boy kept gawking at me.
“Is there a reason you keep staring at me with your mouth hanging open? If there were flies in this place they would surely be taking up residence in your big mouth.” Amka started laughing and Sven looked like he was ready to collapse.
“She has a point Cadence, why are you staring at her so rudely.” I nearly choked on my food and saw Cadence wince.
“You’re the one I’m supposed to marry?” I stood up and felt sick to my stomach. He glanced at Amka and then his father.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” My voice was starting to get loud and the other people at the table were shifting uncomfortably.
“You never asked you assumed I was an Omega.” I picked up my half eaten waffle and threw it at him. It smacked him in the face and landed on the table with a plop.
“I didn’t assume anything you could have said you were the one I was supposed to marry instead you continued to lie to me. You’re an ass!” I turned on my hell and stalked out of the dining room.
He had a point, I didn’t bother asking his name and rank, but I wasn’t about to let him know that he was right about something.
What….a…douche…canoe.
