LUCENT I tossed and turned on the bed and sighed. All I kept thinking about was the leader and his illness. I have seen it somewhere and I can’t figure out where I have seen it before. Slipping out from under the covers I hissed from the cold. The tile floor should have been as cold as the air but they must have had the tiles heated. I put my feet into the fur-lined boots by my bed and looked around for more clothes. This place was a frozen Hell. I saw a heavy blanket with a colorful print on it, it looked warm so I wrapped it around my shoulders like a cape. Shuffling out of the room I decided to go to the library. I hoped they had things there I could use to make notes with. Pushing open the doors for the library, I was relieved that it was warmer in there than in my room. There was also a light bobbing around in the library. “Hello? Is there anyone here?” There was the sound of books crashing and a woman muttering. I followed the curses and came face to face with the most beautiful woman I have seen outside of fairy. My jaw dropped as she was bending down to pick up books. Her hair was a raven sheet of silk as it fell over her shoulders. “You are stunning!” The woman looked up at me and I blushed. “Oh, I am so sorry. I was told that I should get some materials for you.” She was nervous and I hurried over to help her with the books. “I am Lucent, who are you?” I held my hand out to the woman and she narrowed her eyes at me. Did I say something insulting again? “So you are her? Cadence’s mate.” I rolled my eyes and put some of the books on the table. “I am not a mate to anyone. Why has everyone just been rude to me? As I said to that Omega, I am sorry for whatever I did to be offensive it isn’t like I wanted to be here. I was forced to be here.” I was so tired of everyone treating me like garbage. “I’m sorry, I also apologize for Omega’s attitude. I am Amka I will be helping you adjust to life here in Alaska.” The woman still looked bitter and like she wanted to rip my head off. “Did you and Cadence have something going on?” The woman blushed and I couldn’t crush the worm of jealousy that was creeping in my stomach. “It is nothing you need to worry about my Luna.” I rolled my eyes, this woman wanted the man I never met, she is welcome to him. “I never met him. As I said I was forced to be here. You are free to have him.” Amka looked shocked. “That is unheard of. You are his mate and his Luna; you cannot just pawn him off to another woman.” She was irritating me now. “Well if I don’t want him and you don’t want him, there has to be something wrong with this guy.” Amka’s eyes went wide and then she snorted. All of a sudden, she was laughing so hard that tears were flowing down her face. I couldn’t help but join in on her laughter and we both continued to pick up the books in companionable silence. Once we had everything sitting on the table, I picked up a journal and flipped through it. “That belonged to Cadence’s mother. It should help you with pack politics.” I tucked it under my arm and wondered if the next question I asked would insult her. “I have a question; I don’t want to be offensive but it is something I need to know and they don’t talk about this in Fairy too much.” I was playing with the fringe of my blanket. “Sometimes I forget that the world is not as educated about the supernatural creatures as they should be.” She gestured for me to go on and I exhaled. “Ok, what is the difference between lycan, shifter, and werewolf.” Amka winced and I immediately wanted to take it back. “Lycans are created. A virus that attacks genetics and transforms them. The virus was originally created using other animals but the humans wanted the loyalty that wolves showed. Hence Lycan. After generations, it is just ingrained in the DNA of offspring.” “Interesting that seems like something that could have been created by the crackpot scientists in Fairy.” Amka giggled. “Well, it could have been who knows.” “Shifters are not just canines they can be birds, reptiles, cats, etc. Do you know what a skinwalker is?” I shook my head and she went on. “Skinwalkers are a Navajo legend, they are a witch that can wear the skin of an animal and turn into that animal. That is where shifters come from.” Frowning I made a face. “Well not exactly, shifters are natural and are not ruled by the moon.” “That leaves were animals which are ruled by the moon. They are humans that have been attacked by shifters and they are infected. Were animals being sort of like a virus.” I filed this all away and hoped I could remember it. There wasn’t much of a difference between shifters and Were animals. Lycans were the only canines. “Come on let’s get you back to your room.” I winced because it was too cold in my room. “It is too cold there.” I couldn’t help the whiny tone and she laughed. “They must not have turned the heat on. I will show you how to build a fire.” I followed her and grabbed a few books to bring with me.
