CALISTA SYLVERINE’S POV
I don’t know what led me in front of the women with both of my arms stretched sideways, supposedly to defend them from getting whipped with the rope that contained wolfsbane, which was deadly.
The heavy beating of my heart made it harder for me to breathe. Although that wasn’t a reason for me to ignore the two who don't deserve this kind of cruelty.
“Get out of the way, Calista,” Alpha Donovan firmly ordered me, and I didn’t move an inch out of my spot. “If you wish to be whipped together with them, then I don’t mind.”
He wasn’t joking around when he said that. He tremendously hit the three of us with that rope. The two couldn’t scream in pain because of how drained their energy was. On the other hand, I yelled my lungs out as tears immediately streamed down my cheeks.
The pain in my forearm was unbearable.
It was burning my skin, and it felt like my flesh was getting torn apart one by one.
No matter how absurd it sounded, it was like my forearm was going to be detached from me.
“I-it hurts…” I muttered as my knees gave up.
I breathed in as quickly as I could. There was nothing I could do to help the two, and I only got myself in trouble.
“I warned you but you didn’t listen. What else did you expect? You’re in my territory, Calista. The one and only person you should and must follow is me. My words are absolute,” Alpha Donovan declared as he looked down on us with such a fierce gaze.
My lips trembled. If I could, I would’ve bitten my tongue by now just to escape this hell. But that would only give me another reason to scream in distress.
“Why are you doing this to your own pack? You’re the alpha and as you said, you’re supposed to be strictly followed…” I forced myself to stand back up, still trying to protect the women behind me. “But why are you hurting your own people?”
A loud scoff escaped through his mouth. “My own pack? My people? Those two are mere Omegas of this pack.” The alpha repeatedly shook his head. “That’s nonsense. Even if everyone drops dead in front of me, I would just laugh it off. Your life doesn’t concern me at all.”
He says that, but the second he returned the rope to one of his guards, I caught his eyes softening up.
The alpha’s words and actions don’t match at all, and it’s confusing me.
I immediately looked at the omegas behind me when the alpha left us, and even though I was injured, I still helped them sit and let them lean on the wall.
“I-I’m sorry… I didn’t know that he would really punish you just because I didn’t eat,” I sincerely apologized as I bowed my head, clenching both of my fists in frustration and regret.
One of the omegas cupped my cheeks. “It’s fine, Miss Sylverine… This much is nothing compared to what we went through before we were accepted here. You don’t have anything to apologize for.”
“We should be the ones sorry because we tried to force you to eat, even though we knew you were…” the other one tried to speak, but she coughed up blood, so I tried to tend to her wounds.
My abilities weren’t enough to fully heal her. I wasn’t a doctor and never have I been in the medical field. I only know the basics when it comes to first aid, and that might only apply to humans and not werewolves. I kindly asked the guards to bring over some doctors or whoever was responsible for healing them, and thankfully, they didn’t complain.
I walked up the stairs in search of the alpha’s room, and I saw him standing near an opened door.
“After what you’ve done to them, you’re out here, casually smoking?” I approached him with heavy steps. “Who do you think you are? The alpha, yes, I know, but does that give you the right to kill?”
My eyes widened the moment that Alpha Donovan grabbed my neck with one hand, strangling it as tightly as he could. He pushed me to the other side of the door, forcing it to close as we entered the room.
“You’re just a lowly she-wolf bought from an auction. Do you think you’re special just because my delta bought you for three billion? That amount doesn’t even match an hour of our daily wage,” the alpha said.
His crimson eyes were literally burning and I could sense his intense bloodlust. I shouldn’t have provoked him this much.
“I-I can’t breathe…” I held his arm with both of my hands, trying to pull it away from me, but it was inevitable.
“The next time that I hear from anyone that you haven’t eaten or even touched the food served to you, I will never let you near any food or water again. I don’t care if you drop dead from hunger and thirst—I won’t even let you have a smell of someone cooking,” he threatened me before he decided to release me.
I sat on the ground on my legs, holding my neck as I tried to catch my breath.
I should’ve just died back when my parents tried to kill me…
***
SEVERAL WEEKS LATER
Nothing changed. Alpha Donovan still continuously punishes everyone he wanted to.
Even me.
I felt like he was purposely abusing me and treating me way worse than those omegas.
I’ve had enough. No matter how many times I executed my plans to escape, none of it seemed to work as I was always caught by the beta, the delta, the gamma chief, and even the mere guards who were standing by the packhouse’s gates.
“If you want to go out of this place, you’re free to go now. Run away from me if you can. If I catch you, I’ll never set you free and I’ll totally claim you as mine,” Alpha Donovan whispered to my ears from behind.
I didn’t sense his presence nearby, as if he had miraculously teleported.
Without any second thoughts, I ran as quickly as I could. No one dared to stop me, unlike before. They didn’t even bother glancing my way.
“He must’ve told them something,” I thought to myself.
I initially thought that I was free the second that I stepped out of the gates. I hurriedly ran and ran, letting my feet take me wherever. I kept looking back, afraid that the alpha was only a few inches away from me.
Luckily, he was out of sight.
My face bumped on something as soon as I faced forward, causing me to stumble on my ass. Looking up, I saw a person with a mask covering half of his face.
“H-help me—”
The man covered my mouth with his big hand. “Shh… Someone is coming.” We hid behind a thick trunk.
“I-I need to run, please let me go,” I murmured, hoping he would hear me.
He suddenly knelt in front of me and showed me his pinky. “Promise me one thing…”
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. “I don’t have time for—”
“Promise me that you will stay strong and wait for me. I promise that I’ll come back to save you,” he seriously said as he reached out to my pinky, letting them touch, serving as a pinky promise that mustn’t be broken.
The man ran ahead, deeper into the forest, without waiting for my response. His crimson hair and eyes definitely seemed similar to someone I know.
“I found you, Calista,” Alpha Donovan uttered as I felt his arms around my body, my back touching his chest. “You’ll never get away from me this time. I own you as mine.”
The alpha leaned his forehead on my shoulder, letting me feel his hot breath brushing through my skin.
“I’m going to make you mine, get you pregnant, and mark you as my mate, Calista Sylverine,” he continued.
