Outside, lighting flashed as the skies rumbled with the promise of rain, the breeze had turned chilly and had begun howling quietly, it rustled the leaves of the trees noisily. Madeline lay on her bed with her face inclined heavenward, she had been like that for a while, after tossing and turning endlessly she had settled for lying on her back and staring at the ceiling. She had tried her best to not think about anything all day, she had tried to focus solely on the fact that she would be out and away from here if she did as she was told. She had tried to picture herself living in a small apartment which had everything she needed; it’d be quiet and peaceful, there’d be no one to make her life miserable, it’d be just her.
