CHAPTER ONE

The wind ruffled through her hair as she ran aimlessly down the narrow cobblestoned alley, she wasn’t sure where exactly it was that she was headed but she ran only with the sole priority of getting away from them. Heavy footsteps behind her told her that they were close and it wouldn’t be long before they caught up with her.  She looked back at them over her shoulder, and heavens, they had their weapons drawn. Without thinking or caring to check if the streets were clear she dashed out of the alley into the busy streets, and at that moment the honk of a car blared loudly drawing her attention to the bright headlights approaching her.  It was at that moment that she realized she had dashed right into the middle of a busy street at what……midnight?  Impulsively she ducked and raised her hands over her head to shield her from the unfortunate impact she had been expecting.  Better to die, yes. It was better to die than go back to living like that, if you could even call that living. If freedom would come in death then she’d gladly have at it. The loud screeching of tires braking abruptly was all she heard, she felt nothing, the car ought to have hit her by now, yet she felt nothing.  Slowly she lowered her hands and pried her eyes open, the first things she saw were the blinding headlights, she squinted her eyes, and it was then she saw the two front doors open and feet with slick leather shoes stuck out, followed by the men who owned them.  She looked up at the two men dressed corporately in jet black suits, identical man buns and shades, they struck her as the mafia type, however they were the least of her concern at the moment, she took a quick glance at the chasers and realized they were still after her.  “Miss, are you out of your mind?”. One of the men spoke. “Are you looking to get yourself killed?”.  They looked influential, or at least intimidating, perhaps they could help her.  “I…..i need help”. She managed to say, her breaths left her in heavy pants. “Some men are after me”.  Tears clouded her vision but she managed to blink them away, she wouldn’t cry, not in front of strangers.  “Look Miss, we have a place to be”. The other one said. “You best get back to running”.   She shook her head almost desperately.  “Please, they’ll…”. The words stuck in her throat, they threatened to choke her. She tried again. “They’ll…..”.  “Get of the road please”.  “Please help me”. She pleaded.  Her gaze shifted from them to her chasers panickedly.  “Please”. She added.  The men exchanged meaningful looks before one nodded and began walking towards her, his intention clear, he meant to get her out of their way.  “Wait, please, you don’t understand……”. She choked. “Please”.  He grabbed her by the arm and began pulling her to her feet.  “Wait”.  She had never seen a grown man follow an order so quick, he seemed to pale on hearing the voice from behind them. He released her at once and stepped aside giving way for her to see who had spoken.  She watched another man step out of the car regally, he was dressed in a black suit too, but even a blind man could tell that his and theirs weren’t even close to being the same, perhaps it was the accessories he had on, or the fact that he exuded a billion dollar aura.  She felt everything come to an abrupt standstill for a moment as she stared at him, one would think that after all that she had been t5hrough she’d hate every man she saw yet she couldn’t feel the slightes thint of resentment toward the handsome specimen she was looking at. His black hair seemed to glow in the specks of the white headlights, his lean but well-built physique exuded majesty, the entirety of him summed up power personified. Slowly he took off his shades to reveal striking grey eyes which made her breath hitch even more, why every other person using the road was chill with the hold up she had caused; she wasn’t sure, what she was sure of was that she needed help and she would beg for it.  She fell to her knees at once.  “Help me, please”. She begged.  She glanced at her chasers again, they were just across the street, if she hadn’t been panicking and pumped up with adrenaline she would have realized that they had stopped running, they just stood there watching, as though they didn’t dare get closer.  His striking gaze scrutinized her, she felt bare under his raw scrutiny, felt as though he saw through her very soul.  “What is your name?”. He asked her, his voice deep and clear.  Her name? it had been so long since anyone had called her name, hell it had been long since anyone cared to ask.  “Madeline”. She answered.  “Why should I help you, Madeline?”. He asked, her name rolling off his tongue almost naturally.  “They’ll …..”. she couldn’t get the words out.  She blinked back her tears again.  He arched a brow questioningly.  “They kidnapped me”. She said. “I am trying to escape”. She said.  “Yes, but that doesn’t concern me”. He said causing alarm to flash in her eyes. “I am a business man Madeline, helping you will bring me nothing but expenses”. She shook her head desperately. “Please”. She pleaded.  “I will give you another chance”. He said. “Now tell me, why should I help you?”.  “I’ll do whatever you want, I’ll do whatever I can in return, please just help me”. She begged.  A small smile curved his lips, something sinister loomed behind.  “Very well then”. He said, his gaze shifted to the men who had been chasing her. “I’ll help you”.  He spoke loud enough for everyone to hear, the warning was clear, she was under his protection now.  She had never felt more relieved than she felt at that moment, she was free, she was saved, she was finally saved.......or so she thought.
