The Final Piece

Kael met her eyes. “Because if he controls you…” Realization hit her. “…he controls every wolf.” Kael nodded. “That’s why he didn’t kill you tonight.” Aria crossed her arms. “And here I thought I was charming.” Kael stepped closer. “Aria, you need to understand something.” “What?” “Vargan isn’t just powerful.” His voice dropped. “He’s patient.” “How patient?” “He’s been preparing for a war with humans for twenty years.” Aria stared at him. “And now the Moonborn shows up.” Kael nodded grimly. “To him, you’re the final piece.” Before Aria could respond— A distant howl rolled across the forest. Then another. Then several more. Kael’s head snapped toward the trees. “Those aren’t Vargan’s wolves.” Aria groaned. “Please tell me that’s good news.” Kael didn’t move. “No.” “How bad?” His golden eyes sharpened. “Three different packs.” Aria blinked. “They’re already here?” Kael nodded slowly. “The Alphas move fast.” She looked toward the dark forest. “Well,” she muttered. “Guess I’m popular.” Kael’s voice was quiet. “You have no idea.” From the shadows beyond the trees— Massive wolves began to emerge. Not one pack. Three. And at the center of each… An Alpha. Aria exhaled slowly. “…This is going to be a long night.”
