Friend or Foes Who Will Know

The forest edge rippled with movement. Aria stood beside Kael in the center of Blackridge’s ruined street as three enormous wolves stepped from the darkness. Each moved with the quiet confidence of something used to being feared. Behind them, their packs lingered in the shadows. Watching. Waiting. Kael’s voice was low. “Stay behind me.” Aria crossed her arms. “Pretty sure they’re here for me.” “Exactly why you should stay behind me.” The first wolf shifted. Bones cracked and twisted as fur pulled back into skin. A tall woman with dark braided hair stepped forward, her eyes glowing amber even in human form. She wore leather armor stitched with wolf teeth. “Moonborn,” she said calmly. The second Alpha changed next. A massive man with pale skin and white-blond hair. Scars crisscrossed his chest like old lightning strikes. The third Alpha remained in wolf form a moment longer before shifting into a lean, sharp-faced man with black hair and cold gray eyes. Three Alphas. Three packs. And all of them staring directly at Aria. The woman spoke first. “I am Lyra of the Northern Pack.” The scarred man crossed his arms. “Torren of the Ironfangs.” The last Alpha gave a slight bow. “Darius of the Shadow Vale.” Aria blinked. “Wow. Very dramatic introductions.” Kael muttered under his breath, “Try not to insult them.” “No promises.”
