The impact blasted both of them through a wooden cart, shattering it into flying debris. Aria staggered back. Dust filled the air. From the wreckage came the sound of claws tearing wood. Then Kael burst out of the debris— Half-shifted. His hands had become claws. His eyes glowed brighter than before. Vargan followed, towering over him. The Alpha laughed. “You’re still holding back.” Kael bared his teeth. “I don’t need the wolf to beat you.” Vargan’s red eyes gleamed. “Oh, I think you do.” He swung a massive claw. Kael blocked it—but the force hurled him across the street. He slammed into a stone wall hard enough to crack it. Aria’s stomach dropped. “Kael!” Vargan turned slowly toward her. “Ah,” the Alpha murmured. “The little hunter.” Aria raised her dagger. “Come try your luck.” Vargan tilted his head. “You smell strange.” Her grip tightened. “That’s not creepy at all.” The Alpha stepped closer. “You carry the scent of the moon.” Aria frowned. “What does that—” Vargan suddenly lunged. Aria dodged just in time as his claws ripped through the space where she’d been standing. She slashed at him. The silver blade struck his arm— —and snapped. The broken dagger clattered to the ground. Aria froze.
