Marked By the Moon

Vargan smiled. “Silver works on lesser wolves.” He grabbed her by the throat and lifted her off the ground. “But I am something more.” Her lungs burned as she struggled against his grip. Across the street, Kael staggered to his feet. His eyes widened. “Vargan—!” The Alpha tightened his hold. “Watch closely, old friend.” Aria’s vision blurred. The world dimmed. Then— Something inside her chest pulsed. Warm. Bright. Vargan’s eyes widened. “What—” A burst of silver light exploded from Aria’s body. The force blasted Vargan backward, sending the massive Alpha crashing through the wall of a nearby barn. Aria dropped to the ground, gasping. Kael stared at her. “…What did you just do?” Aria blinked, equally stunned. “I… have no idea.” The barn wall exploded outward. Vargan stepped from the wreckage, smoke rising from his fur. For the first time— The Alpha looked uncertain. His red eyes narrowed at Aria. “…Interesting.” He lifted his head and howled. The remaining wolves immediately retreated toward the forest. The battle stopped as quickly as it had begun. Vargan backed toward the treeline, never taking his eyes off Aria. “This isn’t over,” he said softly. Then he vanished into the woods. Silence fell over Blackridge. Smoke drifted through the ruined street. Wounded hunters groaned. Villagers slowly emerged from hiding. Kael approached Aria cautiously. “You want to explain the glowing moon explosion thing?” Aria rubbed her throat. “I was hoping you could.” Kael shook his head slowly. “I’ve never seen anything like that.” Across the street, the Silver Order hunters were staring at her. Not with gratitude. With suspicion. Their leader spoke first. “What… are you?” Aria met his gaze. For the first time in her life— She didn’t know the answer.
