You’ve Got to Be Kidding Me

234 Words
A growl rumbled somewhere nearby. Aria froze. The man sighed. “Too late.” The sound came again—closer now. Heavy paws against the leaves. Aria turned— And a massive wolf burst from the trees. Silver fur. Eyes blazing gold. Her dagger flew up— But before she could strike, the man grabbed her wrist and yanked her backward. “Are you trying to die?” he snapped. “I had it handled!” “Against that?” The wolf lunged. The man shoved Aria behind him—and then something impossible happened. Bones cracked. His shoulders twisted. A growl ripped from his throat as moonlight swallowed him. When he turned again— He wasn’t human. Fur rippled across powerful limbs. Claws carved into the dirt. Golden eyes burned brighter than the moon. Aria stared. “Oh,” she breathed. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Two wolves now faced each other in the clearing. The newcomer snarled. Her wolf — snarled back. The fight was brutal and fast. Teeth flashed. Bodies slammed against tree trunks. Aria watched in stunned silence until the enemy wolf finally fled into the dark with a wounded yelp. The clearing went quiet again. The surviving wolf exhaled heavily. Then bones shifted once more. Minutes later the man stood there again—barefoot, breathing hard, and very naked except for torn fabric at his waist.
