Ruthless Ruler

Finally Torren broke the silence. “So,” he said between bites, “anyone else want to talk about the giant glowing moon explosion earlier?” Lyra shot him a look. Torren shrugged. “I’m just saying. That was impressive.” Darius glanced toward Aria. “The MoonBorn’s power manifests differently depending on the individual.” Torren grinned. “Well if that was the warm-up, I’d hate to see the final form.” Lyra stopped pacing and turned toward Aria. “How are you feeling?” Aria hesitated. “Like someone dropped a mountain on me.” “That’s normal,” Darius said calmly. “Your body is still adjusting to the connection with the moon.” Aria rubbed her temples. “I didn’t even know that power existed until tonight.” Lyra crossed her arms. “The MoonBorn is tied to the natural balance of the werewolf world. When that balance is threatened…” “…the power shows up,” Torren finished. Aria looked toward the forest where Vargan had disappeared. “He killed the last MoonBorn.” Darius nodded slowly. “Yes.” “Why didn’t anyone stop him?” Silence fell for a moment. Lyra finally spoke. “We tried.” Her voice was quiet but firm. “But Vargan wasn’t always what he is now.” Kael sat beside Aria again. “He used to be respected among the Alphas.” Torren snorted. “Yeah. Before he went completely insane.” Darius continued. “The last MoonBorn attempted to prevent Vargan from expanding his territory. He believed the ancient laws limited the strength of our kind.” Lyra clenched her jaw. “So he challenged the MoonBorn directly.” Aria frowned. “And won?” Kael’s expression darkened. “Barely.” Torren added, “He nearly died doing it. But the MoonBorn underestimated how ruthless he’d become.”
