The scent of blood was still in the air.
Luna Hayes stood at the edge of the Black Moon territory, her hands trembling. Behind her, the castle walls that once held her prisoner now felt like a cage she didn’t want to leave.
“Don’t go,” a voice cut through the silence.
Alpha Kael. The man who destroyed her pack. The man whose mark still burned on her neck.
He stepped out of the shadows, his black coat soaked from the rain. His golden eyes were not cold tonight. They were… broken.
“You should have killed me that night,” Luna whispered. “When you slaughtered my family.”
“I tried,” Kael said, his jaw tightening. “Every night since, I’ve tried to hate you. But fate is cruel, Luna. The Moon Goddess tied us together.”
Luna laughed bitterly. “Fated mates? To the Alpha who orphaned me? That’s not fate. That’s punishment.”
Kael took one step closer. The bond between them pulsed painfully, like a wound that refused to heal.
“Then break it,” he said quietly. “If you hate me so much, reject me. Here. Now. In front of everyone.”
His words echoed across the courtyard. Wolves from both packs were watching. Waiting.
Luna raised her head. For years she dreamed of this moment. Revenge. Freedom.
But when she looked into his eyes, she didn’t see the monster from the war. She saw a man drowning in guilt.
“I…” Her voice cracked. “I can’t.”
Kael’s expression shattered. “Because you’re weak?”
“Because it would kill me too,” Luna admitted, tears falling. “The bond won’t let me.”
Silence.
Then Kael did something no one expected. He dropped to one knee in front of her. The mighty Black Moon Alpha, bowing.
“Then let me earn it,” he said. “Not as your enemy. Not as your Alpha. As the man who will spend every day trying to deserve the life I took from you.”
A gasp went through the crowd.
Luna stared at him. The rain mixed with her tears. The bond between them tightened, warm for the first time instead of painful.
