The fire was crackling in the fireplace as Jake lay awake on one sofa while Kaitie read, lying on the other. Jake was surprised at how comfortable he was on the couch. He stared at the fireplace, hoping the dancing flames would help him fall asleep, but it was useless. He could not fall asleep.
