The fire was crackling in the fireplace as Jake lay awake on one sofa while Kaitie read, lying on the other. Jake was surprised at how comfortable he was on the couch. He stared at the fireplace, hoping the dancing flames would help him fall asleep, but it was useless. He could not fall asleep. “We really shouldn't have had that coffee,” Kaitie's voice broke the silence, her words echoing Jake's thoughts, making him question if Kaitie had read his mind. “I’ve noticed. And your cat has abandoned me, so I can’t even listen to his purr to help me fall asleep.” Kaitie looked over her book at Freckles, lying in front of the fire.
