CHAPTER 1
Nia's scissors snipped through hair with precision, her hands moving in rhythm. Her salon, "Nia's Nest," was bustling with activity. Jade, her assistant, burst in, holding a phone. "Nia, it's Avery. He needs an emergency haircut for a big meeting." Nia raised an eyebrow but couldn't resist the charm of Avery's smile on the phone screen. Nia's mind raced as she handed the phone back to Jade. Avery's smooth talk and charming smile always made her heart skip a beat. She couldn't deny the attraction, but she also couldn't ignore the warning bells in her head. Avery was trouble, and she knew it. "Jade, get Avery's measurements, and let's get him looking sharp," Nia said, trying to sound professional. Jade nodded and began typing away on her tablet. As Nia started prepping for Avery's haircut, she couldn't help but wonder what kind of trouble he was getting her into this Avery arrived at the salon, his confident stride and charming smile commanding attention. Nia felt her heart flutter, but she pushed aside her feelings and got to work. As she began cutting his hair, their banter flowed easily, like a well-rehearsed dance. But amidst the laughter and teasing, Nia noticed something off. Avery's usual bravado was tinged with a hint of nervousness, his eyes darting around the salon as if he feared being overheard. Her curiosity piqued, Nia probed gently, trying to uncover the truth behind his sudden need for a haircut. As Nia worked her magic on his hair, Avery's gaze lingered on her face, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "You know, Nia, you're not just a talented stylist, but a stunning beauty," he said, his voice low and smooth. Nia's cheeks flushed, and she laughed, trying to brush off the compliment. But Avery's eyes held a sincerity that made her heart skip a beat. "Thanks, Avery," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I think you're just trying to distract me from your emergency haircut." Avery chuckled, his eyes never leaving hers. "Maybe a little. But honestly, Nia, I couldn't resist the chance to see you again. You light up the whole room." Nia's heart fluttered at his words, and she felt a spark of attraction she couldn't ignore. But she also knew Avery's reputation as a heartbreaker, and she wasn't about to fall for his charms easily. Jade, ever the observant assistant, noticed the tension between Nia and Avery and decided to intervene. "Avery, you're being awfully charming today," she said, raising an eyebrow. "What's got you so smitten?" Avery's eyes never left Nia's face, and he smiled, his voice dripping with sincerity. "I'm just appreciating the beauty in front of me, Jade. Inside and out." Nia's cheeks flushed, and she glared at Jade, warning her to stay out of it. But Jade just winked and continued to probe Avery, her tone playful but firm. "Save it for someone who doesn't know your reputation, Avery. Nia's not buying it." Avery's smile faltered for a moment, and Nia caught a glimpse of something more genuine beneath the surface. Nia's hands moved deftly through Avery's hair, her mind racing with thoughts. She couldn't deny the attraction between them, but she also couldn't ignore the warning bells in her head. What was Avery really after? And why did she feel like she was getting pulled into a world she didn't understand? As she worked, Nia snuck glances at Avery's reflection in the mirror, her eyes meeting his in a flash of connection. She quickly looked away, her heart skipping a beat. What was she getting herself into? Nia's thoughts swirled with questions, but she pushed them aside and focused on the task at hand. She had a job to do, and she couldn't let Avery's charms distract her. As she finished his haircut and styled his hair, Nia felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. She had created something beautiful, and Avery looked stunning. As she stepped back to admire her work, Avery caught her eye in the mirror. "You're incredible, Nia," he said, his voice low and sincere. "Your talent, your beauty... it's all so captivating." Nia's cheeks flushed, and she looked away, trying to hide her smile. But Avery's words lingered in her mind, making her feel seen and appreciated in a way she hadn't experienced before.
