When she woke up again, Evelyn found herself lying in the hospital.
Two young nurses nearby were chatting.
"It was so touching. When Aaron carried Fiona to the hospital, his back was still gushing blood, yet he insisted that the doctors treat Fiona's injuries first."
"True love since childhood. It's different."
Evelyn listened as if she were overhearing gossip that had nothing to do with her.
The doctor said she was found in the bushes of the greenbelt during the final sweep by the firefighters, after everyone else in the villa had been evacuated.
Just a minor fracture in her leg. She'd heal.
They were staying in the same hospital.
Every day, she could see Aaron and Fiona in the special care ward.
A constant stream of people came to visit them.
"Aaron, how many times do you have to risk your life for Fiona to win her heart?"
"Isn't it obvious? Getting injured together is a sign they're inseparable."
Aaron just smiled.
A few days later, he sent Evelyn a message.
Aaron: Are you still upset? I'm injured and missing you. Why haven't you come to the hospital to see me?
Aaron: Sweetheart, you have to trust me, Fiona is really just my sister-in-law.
Aaron: Once I'm discharged, I'll take you to see the Northern Lights, okay? We promised each other.
Evelyn didn't reply to any of them. 'Aaron, some promises become void when they expire.'
She just wanted her leg to heal quickly.
That day, Evelyn went for a scan, and the doctor said she was recovering well.
Just as she was about to return to her ward, she ran into Aaron in the corridor.
"Perfect. Saves me a call. Fiona wants some fish soup. Yours is the best. Go make some and bring it here."
Anger flashed across Evelyn's eyes.
Aaron loved fish soup, and she had tried it dozens of times, just to earn a single satisfied "Delicious" from him.
Now, he was asking her to do it for another woman, as if it were her due.
"I don't want to," she replied coldly.
After speaking, Evelyn turned to leave, and at that moment, Aaron noticed her limping leg.
"Evelyn, what happened to you? How did you get injured?"
She didn't bother to explain.
"I just twisted it accidentally while walking, it's nothing."
This time, his tone shifted to a command. "Since you're fine, go and take care of Fiona."
In the special care ward, Evelyn was in the kitchen, listening to Fiona acting coy.
"Aaron, I'm so useless. You even have to feed me soup. I'm such a burden. Ms. Williams, why don't you feed me?"
Evelyn stood by the bedside, holding the bowl of fish soup, her hands slightly trembling.
Aaron remained silent.
Evelyn forced herself to sit down and feed Fiona the soup.
Unexpectedly, after just one sip, Fiona spat it out, splattering it onto Evelyn.
"It's so fishy. Disgusting."
Evelyn had simmered it for a full two hours, and anger flashed in her eyes.
As Evelyn stood up, Fiona bumped her elbow.
Evelyn's grip loosened, causing the scalding soup to spill onto Fiona's thigh.
She screamed out loud.
Aaron rushed over and forcefully pushed Evelyn to the ground.
"Get out!" he roared. "How could you? Get the hell out!"
Evelyn fell to the ground, pain piercing through her leg, as she watched Aaron in a panic.
"Fiona, are you okay? I'll go get a doctor for you."
His voice carried a tension and gentleness she had never heard before. It hit her harder than any physical pain, a blade twisting deep in her chest.
She scrambled to her feet, somehow, and fled.
