CHAPTER ONE - LUNAR MISTAKE
“I hope this works.” Elara mumbled, holding a gift bag, she got for her mate, Jax. She still thought about their argument nights before, and she wanted to make peace with him, or she believed she did. “Why is the door locked?” She mumbled. “But his car still in the driveway? Is he asleep? I’ll surprise him.” She inserted her spare key, opened the door, and walked in. The living room was dark, but she was able to hear the voices in the hall. A low laugh, old and very sharp, struck her instantaneously. Her stomach tightened. Kira. Jax's "best friend." Elara's heart skipped. She sneaked nearer, and paused in peering through the bedroom door. Jax was laying down on the bed, whilst Kira sat on his laps, his hands on her waist. They kissed, slowly, and sensuously. Elara's throat went dry. She swallowed hard. “You are too good, baby...” Kira whispered. “I hate she gets this too.” Jax groaned. "Stop talking about her." "Why?" Kira teased. Elara's hands curled into fists. “I am just with her because she is a good girl and mom only talks to me because of her. Right now, Mom is even not talking because we have had a fight, but I am tired. I can no longer continue to act as though everything is okay. I do sometimes wish that this relationship did not occur at all in the first place, I regret meeting her.” Jax said. Kira caresses his hair and kissed him. "Stop talking about her hm? She does not even have time to spoil our moment. I will work out a means of winning over mother. Then you'll break up with her." Jax didn't argue. Elara's chest tightened. Elara could not stand it anymore, rather than heartbreak, she was upset, her wolf's instincts clawing with betrayal. She decided to leave them alone. “I will deal with them at my own convenience.” She mumbled to herself and turned on her heel and walked away before anybody noticed her existence. She quickly went down the stairs, walked out of the house, and got into her car. Despite how hard she tried to not feel hurt, she could not help it because she had genuinely loved that man. She still saw them, heard them, experienced the betrayal lying in her chest. She had her head pressed to the steering wheel, trying to catch her breath. “I wish I never met her.” Those words hurt more than anything she had heard in her whole life and soon, tears began to rush down her face. “I-I need Selene.” She stammered, bringing out her phone to call her best packmate. She dialed. One ring. Two rings. Voicemail. “Okay, alright,” said Elara. I'll figure this out myself." She didn't go home. Home was questions that she did not want to get or answer. She didn't want to explain. She did not want anybody to see her in this way. Instead she found herself at the club which she and Selene occasionally visited on Fridays. Elara went straight to the bar. "Shot of tequila," she said. “As many as you have, bring em all on.” The bartender lifted an eyebrow. "You sure?" "Do you want to see my ID?" she muttered. “Never mind.” The bartender replied and handed it to her anyway. She gulped it down. “One…two …three.” She counted as she kept taking shots after shot. After a time, she ceased to count. She had a light-headed head, her legs felt heavy, a foggy mind. Whenever she saw Jax in her thoughts she took another shot, the alcohol stirring her inner wolf. After a few hours, she tumbled of the club. “Dear heavens,” she laughed as she almost fell whilst she tried to flag down a cab. “Take me… there.” Her worlds came out in a slur as she gave the driver Selene’s house address. Once again she drew out her phone and tapped on the contact of Selene. Still no answer. “Maybe she is asleep….” She mumbled. Several minutes later she reached Selene’s house. Her hand shook as she knocked. She wanted Selene to open the door, so she can hug her and cry to her. Rather, the door open to show Ronan Blackwood, the father of Selene. Her forbidden and secret crush, his alpha aura always pulling at her wolf. This man aroused something in her unlike other older wolves. For years, she fought against that feeling, knowing she should not feel anything towards her packmate's father. But she lost that fight every time. She has crushed on him since the first time she saw him, despite the fact that he was mated. Elara froze. "Oh... hi, Mr. Blackwood.” Ronan's eyes widened. "Elara? What are you doing here? It's almost midnight." "She's... not here?" Elara stammered. Ronan shook his head. “She is out on the weekend with her mother. Why are you out this late?" Elara leaned on the doorframe. "Oh I… okay. I’ll head home now.” She mumbled and attempted to move back, but she ended up on the ground. “You must not be out like this,” Ronan said, gently lifting her off the ground, his touch igniting pack instincts. "Come inside." He held her waist, leading her into the living room. Ronan led her to the couch. "Sit before you fall." She nodded, puffing her cheeks to prevent herself from throwing up. He watched her carefully. "What happened?" Elara laughed weakly. "Jax... he... he cheated on me. Apparently, he does not even…love me. He is only with me because his mother likes me, and would not talk to him if he is not with me. Apparently I am miss goody too shoes whilst his best friend, is the love of his life.” Ronan did not respond at once. He just nodded. "I see. I'm sorry." Elara rubbed her eyes. "I thought he was different." “People are not necessarily what we think,” Ronan said. Elara looked at him. “Why is that like experience talking?” “Mating bond,” he said, “teaches you things.” She snorted. “Your former mate did not leave you without a reason.” Ronan gave her a look. "Did Selene tell you that?" "Maybe." Elara shrugged. Ronan leaned forward. "Why didn't you go home?" “I did not want my mom to question me. Selene did not pick up, and I... came here. I thought she would be here.” Elara replied, honestly. He studied her. "You're shaking." "Anger... humiliation..." she whispered. He said, “You ought not to be embarrassed that some other person was unfaithful.” “Maybe I was just too ugly.” She mumbled. “Don’t say that, you are extremely pretty, Elara, one of the prettiest I've set my eyes on.” Ronan said, slowly wiping the tears from her cheeks. The room suddenly became hotter than it was, the alcohol fueling Elara and giving her courage she could never have on a normal day, her wolf's pull overriding reason. Elara swallowed. "Can I ask something?" "Sure..." came his hesitant reply. And then, unconsciously she leaned forward. “Can… can I kiss you?” He didn't stop her when she leaned forward, he didn’t stop her when her lips met his, he didn’t stop her when she held his shirt and sucked on his lower lips. Maybe because, it was his secret shame. He had always wanted this. But morals and the pack stopped him. The boundaries were tested with the first kiss being uncertain. Then it wasn't. One thing led to another. Nothing was any use now when she screamed and moaned his name, primal urges unleashed. Several hours later Elara awoke with a start. “Dad… Dad.” Selene’s voice came from outside as she knocked on the door to her father’s room.
