Sarah pulled out her phone, her action causing a ripple of surprise among the crowd. Could she actually know Roxanne?
For a moment, the gathered onlookers hesitated. What if they had misjudged her and inadvertently offended the legendary Penny? However, Sarah glanced at her phone in frustration. "Roxanne's phone is temporarily unavailable, but I really am..."
Before she could finish, Pablo, already impatient, sneered. "Save it. You're just full of crap. Next time you try impersonating someone, at least find a decent excuse for why Ms. Jenkins isn't answering."
He mentioned Roxanne with respect simply because Roxanne's reputation had made her a household name.
Sarah sighed inwardly. She hadn't expected Roxanne to be unreachable at such a critical moment.
Eddie, clearly relishing the moment, gestured to the security guards. "Throw her out."
In an instant, multiple guards surged towards her.
Just as they were about to grab Sarah, a deep, commanding voice rang out, "Wait."
Sarah froze, turning towards the sound. Jacob stepped out from the crowd, his expression complicated. "Jacob?" she asked, startled. "What are you doing here?"
Could it be...
Jacob's gaze lingered on her, filled with uncertainty. "My mother is in critical condition. Sarah, are you serious about this?"
Relief flickered across Sarah's face as she seized the moment. "Jacob, I really am Penny. I've already reviewed your mother's medical data. If we delay any longer, we might lose her."
Jacob hesitated. The idea of Sarah being Penny was difficult to process.
He had known her as a schoolmate, someone trustworthy and sincere. She was definitely not the type to pull a stunt like this.
After a moment of deliberation, he stepped aside.
"I believe you. My mother's life is in your hands."
Gasps erupted from the crowd.
Had he lost his mind?
Everyone knew that Penny couldn't possibly be this young woman.
Was this desperation clouding his judgment?
Sarah nodded firmly, her tone resolute. "I won't let you down."
Pablo, visibly alarmed by the turn of events, quickly approached Jacob. "Mr. Porter, please don't fall for her lies. She's too young to be Penny. Trust me, she's taking advantage of your desperation. Letting her in will only worsen your mother's condition."
Sarah scoffed, her gaze sharp and unyielding as she addressed Pablo, challenging his assumptions, "Is your idea of Penny someone who must be old?"
The crowd murmured in agreement, their collective scoff echoing through the room. 'Isn't that obvious?'
Even Jacob's earlier confidence began to waver. If it were any other situation, he might have indulged her claim.
But this was his mother's life at stake.
Pablo crossed his arms, glaring at her with disdain. "I swear on my years of medical experience, you're not Penny."
He couldn't allow her to jeopardize the patient's condition, nor could he accept the idea of Penny being someone younger than him.
The other doctors quickly chimed in, nodding in agreement. "Exactly. If you claimed to be just another doctor, maybe we'd believe you. But you're trying to pass yourself off as Penny? Do you even understand the gravity of the situation? That's Mr. Porter's mother in there. Are you out of your mind?"
"I..." Sarah started to respond, but a new voice interrupted her.
"Jacob, how could you even consider trusting her?" Jacob's sister stepped forward. "Our mother's condition is critical. We can't afford any mistakes."
Her gaze became sharp and accusatory as she turned to Sarah. "If you really know my brother, why not just ask him for money if you're desperate? Why resort to scamming our family like this?"
Sarah shifted her gaze back to Jacob, her determination unwavering despite his growing hesitation.
This situation was too serious to be entrusted to a young woman.
Seeing that Sarah refused to leave, Eddie barked, "If you don't leave now, don't blame us for throwing you out!"
Sarah's frustration deepened. Roxanne had made it clear earlier that the patient could stop breathing at any moment. Why wasn't Roxanne picking up her phone now?
As if answering her thoughts, the sound of a ringing phone echoed from down the hallway. Everyone turned as Roxanne came rushing towards them, slightly out of breath.
Sarah exhaled in relief, quickly ending her call.
Pablo's eyes lit up as Roxanne arrived.
Before Sarah could approach, the crowd of doctors surged forward like a wave, eager to greet Roxanne and secure her favor. Sarah found herself pushed to the back.
Pablo was the first to reach her, extending his hand respectfully. "Ms. Jenkins, thank goodness you're here."
Roxanne shook his hand briefly, her tone brisk. "How's the patient? Has the surgery started?"
Pablo hesitated, caught off guard. "Huh? But Penny hasn't arrived yet."
Roxanne frowned. "That's impossible. She should already be here. She's wearing a white dress. Did she get lost?"
Pablo's face darkened. "You don't say. Someone just tried to impersonate Penny and insisted on performing the surgery. Good thing we stopped her in time."
Roxanne's expression turned icy. "Who dared to impersonate Penny?" She had zero tolerance for people exploiting Penny's name.
Anyone who tried would face her wrath.
Before Roxanne could unleash her anger, Eddie stepped forward, smugly pointing at Sarah. "It's her!"
The crowd parted like the Red Sea, leaving Sarah standing in her white dress, fully exposed to Roxanne's view.
Pablo blinked, his voice trembling. "W-White... A white dress?"
