Strange Encounter
Sarah’s POV:
I nervously scanned around as I walked down the crowded high school hallway, trying to spot a familiar face but I couldn’t.
Why? Well because I just moved here.
My name is Sarah, my mom and I recently moved into this town. We moved from the city because my mom and dad just got a divorce and my mom decided she would like to get a fresh start which basically meant she wanted to be away from my dad and all the drama. I couldn’t really blame her, I loved my dad and all but she left him because he was kind of a careerist. He prioritized his career over almost every other thing, sadly including my mom. At a point she couldn’t take it anymore so she ended things with him.
Anyways it was joint custody so I was still going to stay with my dad. He was going to come pick me up every Friday so I would stay with him for the weekend, and I didn’t have a problem with staying with him, I mean it would give me a chance to see my best friend again but what I didn’t look forward to was the hour drive to the city. I wasn’t the biggest fan of road trips and now I might need to take one every weekend.
I didn’t want to move at first for a number of reasons but the main reason I didn’t actually want to move was because I wasn’t the best in making friends. After all the years I spent in my old high school I only kind of had one friend, Sam. Sam was my best friend in the whole world, I really doubt I would be able to meet anyone like her over here and besides she already warned me not to replace her, even though I could never. I wasn’t even sure how I was going to survive high school over here without her.
My mind had wandered off a bit as I walked through the hallway and I mistakenly bumped into someone, my books dropped to the ground and I immediately bent down to pick them up.
I started picking up my books when I remembered the person behind me. I turned back quickly to apologize. ‘ I’m so... ‘, I began but stopped because I was completely mesmerized by the person in front of me.
He was tall and fair, almost pale white, with piercing blue eyes and a brooding expression. He looked like he belonged in a gothic romance novel, not a high school hallway. What was a guy like this doing here? My heart literally skipped a beat. But…
…my heart shattered when I noticed that he was glaring at me like I was some piece of trash. ‘ Watch where you’re going ’, he said rudely.
I wasn’t even able to utter a word before he turned back and walked away.
I hadn’t felt so embarrassed in my whole life. I didn’t want to look back because I knew people were watching. My first day in school and I had already made a fool of myself. I seriously wanted to stand up and leave, my mind was telling my body that but it just couldn’t move. I just froze there. I wished the floor could just open up and swallow me.
‘ Hey, you need help with that? ‘, someone from behind me asked.
My body finally responded. I turned back to look at who it was. It was a tall and muscular guy, he had a dark hair and he wore a varsity jacket and had a very nice build so I immediately knew he played some kind of sport. He looked like he could be a model but there was something rough and untamed about him. Just how many hot guys were in this school?
I finally snapped myself out of my daydream. ‘ Oh, oh yeah. I’m alright, thanks’, I said then I continued picking up my books but then he joined me and helped me pick up a book.
He got up and then I did. ‘ Here ‘, he said as he handed me the book.
‘ Thanks ‘, I said as I collected it from him.
There was this awkward moment of silence for a while, I didn’t want to jump into conclusions but it felt like we had a ‘thing’.
I couldn’t stop staring at him and it literally felt like my mouth was open and I was drooling. s**t, get it together Sarah.
‘ Daniel ‘, he finally said as he stretched his hand to me.
‘Uh? ‘
He chuckled a bit. ‘ My-name-is-Daniel ‘, he said slowly. ‘ How about you? ‘
Shit, I felt so stupid. It was my first day but I had already embarrassed myself twice.
‘ Sarah ‘, I finally mustered enough courage to say as I stretched my hand out to reach for his handshake.
I shook him. He had a very firm handshake but what was shocking was that I felt a tingly feeling when I did. Could he have felt it too?
The bell rang interrupting what was to me a very beautiful moment.
‘ I’ll see you around Sarah ‘, he said as he smiled at me.
I tried to say something but I didn’t know what to say. Come on Sarah say something, anything.
‘ Are you in the football team? ‘. Those were the words that nervously came out of my mouth. Of all the things I could have said, that was all I managed to say. s**t. I was sure I had definitely scared him off, this was what I meant by I couldn’t make friends.
He laughed softly. ‘ Nah, I’m in the basketball team ‘, he said.
‘ Oh ‘
‘ In fact, we’ll be playing this night, you should come ‘.
‘ For real? ‘. I asked him because I really couldn’t believe this was happening. I needed someone to pinch me to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.
‘ Yeah ‘, he said as he chuckled. ‘ 7pm, I’ll love to see you there’, he added.
I needed to play it cool. ‘ Alright, I’ll check in with my assistant to see if I’m free’, I said. Okay, that wasn’t cool at all, but…
He laughed. He really laughed, I couldn’t believe it.
‘ Alright. I hope you are free ’, he said as he smiled at me. I smiled back at him and this time I was definitely sure that we had a thing.
‘ Uhm, don’t you have a class now? ‘, he asked me and laughed and that was when it clicked to me that the bell had already gone off and I was now late for class.
‘ Oh s**t, I have to go ‘. I said to him before I ran quickly to where I was to have my class.
‘…I ended up being late to class but my teacher pardoned me because it was my first day’, I said.
‘Wow, your day was really…’, my best friend who was on the other side of the phone said then paused.
‘Shitty?’
‘Yeah’, she said and then we both burst into laughter. ‘But anyways you have a date with a cute basketball player’, she added then squealed right after.
I chuckled. ‘Calm down, I don’t think it’s a date. He just invited me to come watch his game ’.
‘ You know it’s a date and you know he likes you. You guys definitely had a vibe ’.
‘ You weren’t even there ’
‘ Well I just know ’
I chuckled again then I rolled over on my bed. I stared at the roof and I couldn’t stop smiling as I thought about the whole thing again. Yeah, we definitely had a vibe.
‘I gotta go, I have a ton of homework to do. I’ll call you after your date’
‘It’s not a...’, I said then paused midway because she wasn’t going to listen to me anyways. I laughed a bit. ‘Alright’, I gave in and said. ‘I can’t wait to see you this weekend’, I added.
‘Me too. I’ve been looking forward to it all week’, she said back to me.
A smile made its way to my face.
‘Alright, byeee’, she said. ‘Don’t get run over’, she added. That was her way of saying goodbye to me. Sam wasn’t the mushy type so I got to hear things like this rather than the whole conventional take care drama but I had gotten used to it and it honestly meant so much more to me than a regular goodbye.
‘Bye b***h!’, I said and then she hung up.
I checked the time on my phone. I needed to start getting ready for my… oh, what the hell… my date.
I threw my hands down on the bed as I hummed softly. It was hard to believe but things were actually going well over here, well asides from the fact that I practically got humiliated by the guy that I collided with earlier. To be completely honest, I kind of had a thing for him when I first saw him because even though he was a jerk he was still hot but now I hated his guts and I didn’t care about all that anymore. In fact I was kind of glad I bumped into him because if I hadn’t I never would have met Daniel.
I turned to check the time on my phone again and I knew I had to begin heading over to the game. I jumped off my bed.
I went downstairs quickly and was about to head out when my mom stopped me.
‘And where are you going to young lady?’, she asked from the kitchen pass through window.
‘I’m going for a basketball game’, I said as I smiled at her.
‘Really?’, she asked sounding really shocked and I didn’t blame her because honestly sports wasn’t really my thing.
‘Yes mom. I want to try new things’, I said to her.
She laughed gently. ‘Alright then, but be home by nine’
‘Mom!’, I whined.
‘ Fine, ten ’, she said with a snicker.
‘Thanks mom’, I said then I smiled at her.
‘Also maybe you should get a hoodie or something, it might get a little chilly at night’, she added.
‘Oh yeah’.
I rushed back upstairs and grabbed my hoodie. It was my favorite hoodie, it was black and it had a little Winnie the Pooh picture by the left chest side. I put it on and then I dashed back downstairs.
‘Bye mom’, I screamed as I went out the door.
‘Byeee’, she said back to me. ‘Don’t forget to be home by nine ‘.
I made some funny noises to make it seem like I didn’t hear her then I closed the door quickly.
The match was by 7 and it was already 6;14. I needed to hurry.
I paced quickly because I didn’t want to be late and I was finally close to the school. I looked at my watch to check if I wasn’t late yet and then I accidentally bumped into someone.
I turned quickly to apologize, but of all the people on earth I could have bumped into it just had to be him… again.
He stared at me and I was really shocked when I noticed that he recognized me.
‘Have we met?’, he asked me.
‘No’, I lied as I nodded my head.
Please don’t remember, please don’t remember.
‘Are you the girl from the hallway?’, he asked me.
Fuck me.
‘I- ‘, I tried to say but he interrupted me before I could finish.
‘I’m really sorry about earlier’, he said.
Wait, what?
‘Honestly I was going through some s**t at the time and I really didn’t mean to react how I did’, he continued.
I was actually really shocked. I had this mental image in my head that he was one of those sexy hot but very mean guys. Okay I didn’t need to add the sexy hot but come on, I almost lost focus just staring at him as he talked.
‘Oh, it’s alright. Thanks’, I said to him.
He chuckled a bit. ‘Alright, cool’. He stretched his hand to me and said, ‘I’m Nate by the way’.
‘Okay’, I said back to him and left him hanging.
What are you doing Sarah?
‘Okay, I totally deserve that’, he said as he brought his hand back down and snickered. ‘So what’s your name?’, he asked me.
‘You know what, I really have to go’, I said to him.
Okay now for real, what the hell Sarah?!
I honestly didn’t know why I said that. It could be because I actually had somewhere to go or because I was still a little bit angry about the way he acted earlier.
‘So Pooh then?’, he said.
‘What?’
And then it clicked to me that he was talking about my hoodie.
‘That’s not funny’, I said to him.
‘Okay, I’m sorry, I’m sorry’, he said as he laughed gently.
I glared at him and I knew he found it funny.
‘Goodbye!’, I said then I frowned at him. I turned back and continued walking.
‘Goodbye Pooh’, he said from behind me.
I pouted my lips as I walked. After about a few seconds I turned my head back and I saw that he had also continued walking to wherever the hell he was going.
‘Jerk’, I said to myself. I turned my head back forward but before I knew it, someone pushed me to the road side.
It was as if time froze and everything was happening in slow motion. I was sure there was no one by my side and even as I looked to where I was before, even though it was a bit dark I was still sure that there was no one there but I was still certain that someone pushed me.
A car was approaching and at that moment I saw my life flash before my eyes. So that was it, even after all of Sam’s warning, so this was still how I would go.
I closed my eyes and waited for my faith but…
A few seconds passed and nothing had happened to me. In fact it felt like someone was holding me.
I slowly opened my eyes and it was Nate.
‘Are you alright?’, he asked me.
‘Yeah’, I said without thinking. ‘Wait! How did you…’, but then I noticed something even more strange. ‘Your eyes’, I pointed out. His eyes looked different than it was before, now it was like red.
‘Oh s**t, he said as he let go and looked away a bit.
What the hell?
‘ Sarah! You made it ’, someone said from a distance. I looked to see who it was and it was Daniel.
There was a confused look on my face because I was still trying to process the whole thing that just happened. I turned back quickly to look at Nate but he was gone.
