Chapter 4: A Dinner Invitation

1167 Words
In the evening, Catherine made her way to the dining hall, which is very large; her heart beats faster with a mix of excitement and nervousness as she approached the fancy doors before her; the big doors were decorated with shining gold details that sparkled in the light. She heard soft voices as she got closer to the door, the sound of silverware clinking and the gentle rustling of clothes. Catherine had never had the opportunity of dining with royalty before, and the idea of her having dinner with Alexander made her feel both thrilled and scared. At that moment, so many questions filled her heart: how good she looked in her clothes, how she should act, and whether she would make a good impression. She decided to put on a long, flowing dress in deep green, which felt soft and enhanced her features, though she was still nervous. As soon as she stepped into the room, her sight amazed him, and the dining hall was stunning, with long tables set beautifully and adorned with fine sparkling crystal glasses. Chandeliers made of gold could be seen hanging from the ceiling, casting a warm light that lit up the detailed arts on the walls. Alexander stood at the head of the table; he looked important yet welcoming. His smile helped calm her nerves when he saw her. His warm look seemed to compel her to feel comfortable and be at ease. Catherine took a deep breath; she knew this was an opportunity to connect more with him. She moved closer, and everything else faded away. The only feeling left was the anticipation of that which will happen that evening. The mixture of anxiety and excitement made every one of her steps feel like a big leap into the unknown. When she finally entered the hall, the greatness of the space surrounded her as she fixed all her attention on Alexander. He stood up from his place where the table was elegantly set, and when their eyes met, it felt like the rest of the world was fading. His gaze was warm and inviting, and his genuine smile instantly made her feel seen. Catherine had a calming breath, and her initial nervousness started to disappear, much like morning mist under the sun. The tight feeling in her stomach began to loosen as she saw the excitement and comfort in his eyes, silently telling her everything would be alright and she belonged here. Crossing the room, the soft glow of candles revealed the details: the rich adornment on the walls, the polished wooden floors, and the exquisite table settings, but Alexander's presence overshadowed all this, and his charisma filled the room, making the lavish surroundings less daunting. Alexander’s smile widened slightly, showing how pleased he was to see her, and that helped ease the tension that had built up inside her before this evening. With every step closer to him, she felt more relaxed, and the earlier worries about dining with royalty began to fade away. “Catherine,” he said, his voice rich and warm, breaking the spell of silence that had settled around them. The sound of her name on his lips was like music, further calming her nerves. She returned his smile, feeling a connection that transcended the formality of the occasion, and in that moment, she knew she was exactly where she was meant to be. “You look so beautiful," Alexander said while he reached out his arm. "Please, join me,” he said. Catherine took a seat beside him and blushed at the same time. As they ate, they engaged in a delightful and enjoyable conversation. Alexander told her sweet stories about his travels to far places full of experiences and adventures, while Catherine also talked about her childhood. She talked about the memories and moments that shaped her life and made her the person she is today. As the evening went on and at that moment, Catherine felt more attracted to Alexander. She noticed how his eyes crinkled charmingly when he smiled, and she noticed the gentle curl of hair at the back of his neck. By the end of dinner, Alexander leaned in closer and said softly, “Catherine, I’ve really enjoyed tonight. Would you like to walk with me in the gardens tomorrow evening?” Catherine’s heart began to beat faster. She was aware that a servant spending time with royalty wasn’t proper, but the idea of refusing didn’t seem possible. “I’d love to,” she whispered back. Alexander had a big smile on his face. This made Catherine’s heart flutter. His gladness was infectious, and she couldn’t help but chuckle, too. “let’s meet in the gardens at sunset,” he said with confidence, and his enthuse made her heart race even more. His eyes had a spark of anticipation, and the sunlight reflected through the trees creating playful shadows, and his words became so promising and inviting Catherine to explore new possibilities with him. He then imagined the sunset painting the sky with orange and pink, which will make the perfect setting for their meeting. “Sunset is perfect,” he continued with his gaze on her. “The gardens will be alive with colours, and the air will be sweet with blooming flowers. That is my favourite time of day.” Catherine felt thrilled at the picture he painted, and she could almost hear the leaves’ soft rustles and chirping birds in the distance as they settled for the night. Then, the thought of walking through the gardens with Alexander while sharing stories and laughter as the day ends made butterflies dance in her stomach. “Will you promise to be there?” he asked earnestly. She nodded with a broad smile. “It's a promise,” she replied, her heart anticipating another time together, and as they shared a final glance, the connection between them felt real and sparked hope with excitement for the evening to come. As Catherine made her way back to her quarters, a whirlwind of excitement and trepidation surged within her. She was acutely aware that she was playing with fire; her feelings for Alexander, the respected captain of the guard, would never be returned. He was part of a world much higher than hers, while she was just the daughter of a minor noble. Yet, their quiet talks and secret looks had created a longing she couldn’t stop. She was caught between her feelings and the real world, then she decided to talk to her best friend Eliza, hoping Eliza would help her to understand and deal with the strong emotions that were filling her heart. It doesn’t matter how hard she tried, she could not change her feelings, even when she lay in bed and try to fall asleep, thoughts about what the future holds for her and Alexander filled her mind. She wondered if there was any hope for them or if she was just dreaming of something impossible.
