Zeeb emerged from the serene cascade that marked the entrance to Lunaria sometime later at midnight along with two others. His tall lanky figure was soaking wet, and so was the little figure slumped over his shoulder.
He reached to check on Skye's pulse, and heaved a deep sigh of relief once he figured she was well and alive-- albeit, unconscious.
' What a disaster this has turned out to be!' Zeeb shook his head and sighed again, this time internally.
He was scared for himself and the entire clan of lycans in Lunaria after witnessing the horrifying manner in which Darren had killed one of them earlier.
Zeeb knew Darren was dangerous, very dangerous, but he'd actually undermined the extent of the threat he posed when provoked.
' How could a single lycan tear another into shreds within a matter of minutes?' Zeeb just couldn't fathom what had happened earlier.
Regardless of the fact that he was an Alpha or not, Zeeb didn't think Darren would be capable of such a feat.
He had no idea if it was because Darren had been living out in the wilderness alone or if this had been his nature all along, but he knew for certain that this wasn't the same Darren he used to know.
He'd become even more feral and wild!
Zeeb didn't doubt for a second that if Darren really went amok, he could really bring an end to their very race. And that wasn't even a joke on his part!
Similarly, the two beside him had also pulled their hoods behind and had a ghastly expression on their faces. They were also horrified after seeing their brother and best friend being massacred by Darren, and only the looks on their faces could tell the story.
Zeeb, at the moment, had a bout of remorse and regret.
He really wished he hadn't taken part in any of this, as he had been Darren's good friend since childhood.
How could he have partaken in the abduction of his so-called 'friend's' daughter? He could as well have stabbed Darren in the back.
However, he also had no choice as a beta to the chief of his clan. There was no denying the Alpha's demands as that in itself would mean his own death.
And as such, he had no choice but to play two sides of the same coin.
Zeeb sighed for the third time in a row and looked ahead at the heavy haze that subdued the hidden home of these lycans.
The landscape was cloaked in a carpet of greenery lushness, with moss-draped mountains and huge trees rising majestically; their verdant contours stretching out in every direction to the hilltop where the chief's house stood.
Since it was late in the middle of the night, most of the Lunarian lycans were still in their homes, and there were only few still up and about, keeping watch around while the others prepared to go out hunting soon as it's dawn.
None of them knew that a terrible storm was brewing at the moment. They had no idea...
' In any case, I have to play my cards right!' Zeeb thought of the situation at hand, and decided to thread carefully. As long as he ensured the little one was safe, he believed that he could reason with Darren and stop things from getting out of hand.
' It's that senile old man's fault. If only he'd let go of his stupid grudges!' Zeeb seethed inwardly. He knew why Volke was doing all of this, but he just didn't understand why it was so important that he'd risk so many lives just to achieve his goal.
" Let's go. He must be waiting" Zeeb urged after a while, taking the initiative to make his way to report the success of their mission to the chief. He'd prepped his mind to go through with things as there was no going back now.
What's happened has already happened...
The others nodded indifferently and followed behind him as well.
When they got to the hilltop, Zeeb led his crew into the Chief's house where the alpha and chief of the Lunarian lycan clan, Volke Rannulf, sat waiting patiently.
His expression was as indifferent and cold as ever, his build brawly and boldly pronouncing his presence even in the large entrance hall.
His fur coat draped on him majestically as he stared straight down at the three who walked in.
He didn't seem surprised that only three out of the four he'd sent returned, he seemed to have anticipated just as much; if not worse...
" Greetings to the chief!" Zeeb knelt to greet, and the others followed.
" Is that the child?" Volke creased his eyes at the little figure slumped over Zeeb's shoulder as he asked in an unconcerned tone, almost as if he were talking about something worthless.
Not even the slightest concern in his tone about the fact that this was his very own granddaughter he was speaking of. It was as though it were just another strange hostage he was taking.
Zeeb exchanged confused glances with his peers for a short while before quickly saying, " Y-yes, chief! We managed to grab her, but Christoff... he couldn't make it back with us." He affirmed with a bow of his head, relaying that Darren was in hot pursuit.
Volke sat back hearing this, and waved his hand afterwards, " Take her away for now" He ordered.
Zeeb nodded and quickly moved to go put Skye in one of the rooms, just as he was ordered.
" The rest of you should take some of the men out there. Go ambush Darren on his way here and bring him to me!" Volke instructed the other two, who shook in place, nodded their heads, and hurried away to carry out their orders as well.
Zeeb paused hearing this, but he didn't linger too much and just ran to go put down Skye.
He had to stop those guys from walking right into their own death!
