“Esme!” I heard my aunt scream my name out. It was sure enough to wake me up from my sleep. My dreams had been becoming more and more frequent and it was always the same thing, and they felt more real than just a dream. I lay in bed for a while, then I got up and went straight to the kitchen. “Sleeping beauty.” Aunty Hilda said to me and she made pancake. “Are you up?” I yawned. “Good morning Aunty.” Then I went on to help her with the dishes She smiled at me. “You slept really late last night.” “I was studying.” I said. “Studying or writing one of those your romance novels?” She winked at me. “Tell me has Salvador proposed to Maria yet?” I gasped in horror. “Aunty! You’ve been reading my books!” I said in horror. “Don’t worry.” She smiled. “It’s really interesting.” Then it dawned on me that if Aunty had really read my books, I wondered how much she had actually read. And then I remembered the few parts of the books that were rated eighteen and I grew pink at the thought of my Aunt reading those scenes. “How much did you read?” I asked swallowing. She looked at me with a side eye and a mischievous smile. “Enough.” She said and she laughed and I wish I had the chance to, I would have strangled her there and then. Then she turned off the gas and turned to look at me with a straight face. “What’s wrong?” I said. Was she in disapproval of my books? “You don’t think my books are okay?” “What?” She asked then she massaged her hair. “Oh no. Your books are lovely.” Then she took my hand and made me sit down with her and my heart began to race even more. “There is something I need to tell you.” She said. “Your father called and- “My dad?” I jumped. “Is he okay?” She nodded. “Yes he is. He is perfectly okay. Your father is fine. Your father spoke to me this morning. He said that he wants you to come down to America.” I looked at her. “On vacation? But school is currently in session.” She shook her head and I was further confused. “Not school or vacation my love.” She said. “Your father wants you to come live with him, in America. He told me has prepared everything your school. He has it all worked out for you.” I looked at my aunt in awe. All my life I had wanted to live with my father. But he had left home in Guatemala right after Mama had died and I had been just six by then. Mama had died as a result of insufficient health care and financial issues. She had been sick and dying for a while and when papa had finally gotten my mum the money to get her treated, it was too late. She had died in my very front and in Aunt Hilda’s arms. I knew that it had affected him because papa had been determined to look for greener pastures and so he had secured a passport to America where he said he was going to look for a better Job. I hadn’t seen him since he had left, I had simply only spoken to him on phone calls, Skype or video calls and I missed him very much. And just hearing that he wanted me to come and not just see him, but live with him overwhelmed me with Joy. Then I turned to Aunt Hilda. “What about you aunt Hilda? You and Mario?” “We would be fine.” She told me. Ever since Mama had died, Aunt Hilda who was my father’s sister had take care of me and been like my own mother. I could not imagine a life without her. “Moreover you’re going to America to secure a better life for us and to come get us when you can.” She kissed my forehead. I felt my eyes begin to get teary. “But this is the only home I know. I love Guatemala.” “And Guatemala loves you too.” She said. “Your friends here they love you equally. But sometimes we have to make sacrifices to secure a better future for ourselves and also for the ones we dearly love. You’re my pumpkin. And I love you very very much. I only want what’s best for you.” The tears couldn’t stop and I let them flow as I tied her into a tight embrace. She hugged me and I couldn’t stop myself. I began to weep profusely. Then she gently pulled me away. “Look at you crying.” She said pretending to be okay, but I could see that she was hurriedly hiding the tears in her eyes, so that I too wouldn’t see them, but it was too late. “You’re sixteen and you’re crying. Of course not! You’re a Pedro!” I laughed. “When am i leaving?” I asked. “Tomorrow.” She said matter of fact. “Tomorrow????” I said in Alarm. “But I haven’t arranged my things. I haven’t told my friends that I am leaving.” “We can do that today. You can get yourself dressed and tell everyone in. School goodbye.” Aunt Hilda advised. “Your passport and papers are already ready.” “Does Mario know?” I asked. “You know how he is.” She shook her head. “I didn’t even dare tell him. He would weep.” “Can I be the one to tell him?” I asked. “Why not?” She said. At that very moment Then my little cousin, Mario ran into the room. He was just aged five. “Aunty Esmeralda.” He screamed as he rushed towards me and I immediately scooped him up into my arms. “How is little little little monkey.” I said as I spun him around and then I made kissing noises on his cheek and everywhere else on his body. He giggled. “Aunt Esmeralda I’m going to pee pee myself.” Mario said and I dropped him because the last time he hadn’t even had the strength to say it, he peed straight down on me. “Thank God you dropped him.” Aunt Hilda pointed at me. “Or the two of you would mop this floor.” “Aren’t you late for school?” I asked him. “No.” He said. “I bathed myself and I’m already ready.” Aunt Hilda’s eyes grew wild. “You did what?” She said in alarm. “I know you didn’t wash yourself well. Come on up! Up! We’re going back to the bathroom.” Mario started to whine. “But I’m a big boy now. I can do it myself. All my friends have their bath by themselves.” “Well you’re going to show me how you had your bath mad we can testify if you should be left to bath on your own or I should bring the sponge for you.” Aunt Hilda said shooing Mario away. He scowled and whined and complained but had no choice as his mum dragged him back into the room. I got up to take a pancake and my nephew flew right into the kitchen and picked a pancake and rushed it into his mouth. “Mario!” She screamed. And Mario ran back into the bedroom with her. I cleaned the kitchen, and completed the pancakes for breakfast whilst thinking of what my aunt had just told me. I was going to leave, Guatemala, my home to be with my Dad in America. It was crazy and out of this world. I had always dreamt of something like this, hoped for something like this, but it had always been a dream, never expected it to be reality anyways. And here I was, my aunt telling me that I was going to America tomorrow and I had only today to tell my friend and everyone else goodbye. I had my bath and got dressed and ate my breakfast. By the time I was done, my cousin and aunt came into the room. “He doesn’t know how to bath.” Aunt Hilda told me. “I’m going to be bathing him until he turns twenty if I’m not careful.” “I only missed a spot. A spot!” Mario whined. “Look at you! Big man!” Aunt Hilda mimicked him. “Such a shame that you’re going to have your cousin leave you while you’re still a baby.” And then Aunt Hilda realized what she had just said and her mouth dropped open. She wasn’t supposed to tell him, not hey at least. Mario’s head sharply turned to me, his face demanding an apt answer. “Leave? What is Mummy talking about?” He asked me. I started to scratch my head unsure of how to respond when the bus horned. “Ahhh ha!” Aunt Hilda clapped. “That’s your hus. Go on out.” She quickly packaged his breakfast and squeezed them into where his lunch was. “Alright you too be in your way.” She said as she kissed Mario and kissed me too. We waved goodbye and Mario and I raced down the stairs. “What was mummy talking about you leaving?” He asked as he ran down the steps of our apartment. We lived on the seventh floor and so we had to March down a long flood of steps. “Mario if you don’t watch where you are going, you’re going to fall and we are going to miss the bus and I don’t want to run to school.” I told him. And he obeyed until we went to the ground floor. We greeted out co-tenants and hopped onto the bus. I sat on my seat and Carried Mario and set him on my lap. “Are you leaving us?” Mario asked. I sighed. “Yes.” “To where? Why?” He demanded his lips quivering. “America. Because my dad called me to.” I explained but I knew that trying to explain to Mario was going to be difficult. He was a very intelligent child, but when he chose not to, he wouldn’t care to understand. And I knew that he didn’t want to understand anything as long as it involved me leaving him. “But I’m coming back.” I told him as I spoil him with kisses. “I’m going to be coming to visit and when I get enough money you and your mummy can come and stay with me.” He started crying, and I had to snuggle him tightly because I myself wanted to cry. “Oh monkey.” I said through his hair. “I’m going to miss you too.” Then we came to his bus stop and as usual, I came down with him, kissed him goodbye and gave him an extra candy from my lunch and made him promise he wasn’t going to cry anymore. After he went into his school, I walked to mine. Usually I would run, but then I remembered this was my last day of school and I knew that I couldn’t be punished by Mrs Rodrigo. I got to school and met my friends. “Hiya.” Isabella said to me. I had known Isabella since I was a child. She was my best friend and it broke my heart to tell me that I was leaving. But to my dismay, Isabella was excited for me. “America! To live
