The Luna's Crown
The night smelled of roses, woodsmoke, and destiny. Aria Stone adjusted the silver-threaded dress that hugged her frame and stared at her reflection in the mirror one last time. Her heart fluttered with excitement, nerves, and a weight that pressed on her chest like invisible chains. This was her night—their night. Tonight, she would be crowned Luna of the Moonstone Pack. Tonight, she would stand beside Alpha Damon as his equal, his partner, his mate. Her hand trembled as she touched the delicate crescent-shaped pendant at her throat, a gift Damon had given her when they first realized they were fated. You’re my moon, my light in the dark, he had whispered then. She had believed him. Goddess, she still did. Outside, the full moon glowed bright, silver light spilling across the pack house courtyard. Wolves from every corner of the territory gathered, dressed in ceremonial robes, their eyes gleaming with reverence. Aria could feel the hum of their anticipation even from inside her room. This wasn’t just about her—it was about tradition, legacy, and the bond that united them all. A soft knock sounded at her door. “Aria? Are you ready?” It was Lila, her childhood friend and loyal beta. Aria opened the door to find her grinning wide, her fiery red hair braided intricately. “You look like a queen,” Lila said, giving her an approving once-over. Aria laughed nervously. “Let’s hope I don’t trip in front of everyone.” “You won’t. You’ve got this. Damon chose you for a reason.” Damon chose me… The words echoed in her mind, soothing and unsettling all at once. They descended the stairs together, the low hum of drums filling the air. Pack members turned to look at her, eyes filled with awe, some with envy. Whispers rippled through the crowd: beautiful… the Luna-to-be… fated mate of the Alpha. At the base of the steps stood Damon. Tall, commanding, every inch the Alpha he was born to be. His black suit was sharp, his dark hair perfectly styled, his golden eyes gleaming under the moonlight. But he didn’t smile. For a brief, confusing moment, Aria’s heart stumbled. His jaw was tight, his shoulders stiff, as if he were bracing himself for battle rather than celebration. Still, when he extended his hand, she placed hers in his, drawing strength from his touch. His palm was warm, steady, but his grip lacked the usual tenderness. The ceremony began. The Elder of the pack, an ancient wolf with a voice like gravel, raised his arms to the sky. “Under the light of the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness the crowning of a Luna, chosen by fate, bound by love, destined to lead alongside her mate…” Aria listened, her chest swelling with pride. She could already imagine her future: guiding the pack, standing beside Damon, raising pups, serving the Goddess. Then, as the Elder brought forth the Luna’s crown—a silver circlet studded with moonstones—Damon’s hand tightened around hers. When she glanced at him, his eyes weren’t on her. They were distant. Cold. A prickle of unease slid down her spine. “Do you, Damon Blackwood, accept Aria Stone as your fated mate and Luna?” the Elder intoned. This was the moment. The vow. The beginning of everything. Aria turned to Damon, her breath caught in her throat, waiting for him to speak the words that would seal their bond. But Damon didn’t answer. Seconds stretched into an eternity. Murmurs rose from the crowd. The Elder frowned. “Alpha?” Damon’s golden eyes flicked to Aria at last. What she saw in them made her stomach drop. Not love. Not pride. Not even hesitation. Regret. “I—” His voice cracked. He cleared his throat, his grip loosening. “I cannot accept her.” The world tilted. The drums stopped. Gasps exploded around them. Aria’s knees nearly gave out. “W-what?” she whispered, voice breaking. Damon let her go completely, stepping back. His words rang out, sharp as a blade: “I reject you, Aria Stone, as my mate and as Luna of this pack.” Aria’s entire destiny shatters in front of her pack as Damon publicly rejects her on the very night she was meant to be crowned.
