I am the empire’s only Healing Saintess. For a century, I was also the fated mate of its Vampire King, Lucian. My blood healed his people and fed the wards around his realm. Then he brought Elona, his first love, back to court. Whenever she claimed to be ill, he opened another of my veins. He called each cutting necessary and promised I would recover. Tonight, he took the last of my heart’s blood so she could wear his crown. I have only a few hours left. They will be mine.

Chapter 1 The Last Heart's Blood
The night before Elona’s coronation, King Lucian summoned me to the Blood Chapel. He wanted the only thing I had left. My heart’s blood. I stopped under the chapel arch and held on to the black stone until my knees steadied. A century ago, the runes in these walls had turned gold when Lucian accepted me as his fated mate. Tonight, each one was dark. A brazier burned beside the altar. On the white velvet between us sat the Bloodstone Crown. Elona reclined beside it on a silver chaise, wrapped in lace and pale silk. One hand rested over her heart while the other played with the edge of her sleeve. Physician Alaric stood at her shoulder with the grave face he always wore before Lucian ordered another vein opened. Lucian waited in ceremonial black, already dressed for the future he had chosen. He watched me struggle across the floor without offering a hand. Once, he would have crossed the chapel before I had taken a second step. “You are late.” “I was in the infirmary.” I held out the report the sisters had sealed less than an hour ago. Black veins had spread from the bite marks toward my heart. “They tested my life flame twice. There is almost nothing left.” He glanced at the seal. Elona shifted on the chaise, and his attention went straight back to her. “Alaric says the crown requires one final blessing from a Healing Saintess. Then it will accept a queen outside the fated bond.” He nodded toward the altar. “After the rite, you may rest.” He spoke of the fated bond as a flaw in Elona’s coronation. Alaric had offered him a way around it, and the cost would come out of me again. “A blessing comes from the palm. Alaric asked for blood from my heart.” I set the report beside the crown. “This is the last of it, Lucian. Take it and I die.” His ruby eyes stayed on mine for one breath. I saw the man who had once carried me home from a battlefield, and I waited for him to hear what I had said. Elona coughed. The sound was soft, precise, and enough. Lucian turned before the second cough came. “No,” she whispered. “I cannot let Seraphina suffer for me again. Postpone the coronation. If the clans reject me because I am too weak to wear the crown, I will bear it.” Alaric lowered his head. I caught the small pull at the corner of his mouth. “Lady Seraphina is frightened,” he said. “The heart’s reserve renews. Distress and jealousy have aggravated her weakness. Her life is safe.” “He is lying.” I pushed the parchment closer to Lucian. “Read the report.” He picked it up. My body leaned toward him before I could stop it. The seal remained unbroken when he held the page over the brazier. Fire took the corner, crossed the sisters’ warning, and curled the parchment inward. The healer’s seal split in the heat. He let the last black scrap fall without reading it. “I will not allow another performance to disrupt the succession. You have resented every drop used to keep Elona alive. Tonight, for once, you will put the realm before your need for attention.” Every drop. He counted them as if they were coins from his treasury. He had forgotten the fever after each bloodletting and the hours I spent unable to close my hands. I backed toward the door. The royal guards crossed their spears behind me. “Lucian.” My voice shook. “You once called me your soul. If any part of that man remains, let me leave.” His face closed. Royal dominance locked my joints. My knees struck the floor, and two guards seized my arms before I fell. The force of it felt like a thousand pounds across my shoulders. I could breathe and feel every hand on me. The command simply denied me the use of my own body. Elona looked away. Her smile remained visible in the altar’s polished silver. Lucian knelt in front of me. “It will be quick.” “For you.” He gripped the back of my neck and sank his fangs into my chest, directly above my failing heart. My body stayed rigid under his command while the guards held my arms. The pain from a wrist vein had always been clean and sharp. This bite went deeper. It found the sacred core of my gift and pulled. Golden light moved under my skin, passed through his mouth, and flooded the runes at our knees. The Bloodstone Crown blazed crimson, hungry enough to throw red light across every wall. My heartbeat slowed. One. The infirmary sisters telling me to run. Two. Lucian promising a century ago that no one would ever use me again. Three. Elona smiling at me in the silver. Lucian pulled away. A gold ribbon coiled through the crown’s ruby and vanished. The relic had accepted her. I fell against the altar steps. Black blood ran from the punctures and soaked the front of my white gown. Alaric saw the color and lost his smile. For the first time that night, the physician looked afraid. He recognized what came from a Saintess whose life flame had gone out. Lucian missed his reaction. Elona had stood to admire the crown. “Return Seraphina to her chambers,” he told the guards. “She will attend the coronation once she recovers her senses.” My numb hand caught the edge of the altar as they released me. A thumb-sized recording crystal rolled under my palm. Several blanks had been set out to preserve every coronation vow for the royal archive. I hid it in my sleeve and made myself stand. Elona’s gentle expression had returned. “Rest well. Tomorrow is such an important day for all of us.” I had spent months trying to make Lucian hear me. He had burned the last warning unopened. Love had failed first. The fated bond had followed. The hours I had left would belong to me. I left the Bloodstone Crown behind and walked to the Elder’s Council chamber to sever the bond.
