THEY WERE MEANT TO BEChapter One: A Meeting Written by FateThe morning sun rose gently over the city of Lagos, painting the streets with shades of gold. Cars honked impatiently, traders arranged their goods, and people hurried to work, each carrying dreams that only they understood.Among the crowd was Samuel Adeyemi, a twenty-seven-year-old man whose smile hid years of pain. Dressed in a neatly ironed blue shirt and black trousers, he carried a worn leather bag over his shoulder. Although life had never been easy for him, Samuel had one rule:"No matter how difficult today becomes, never stop being kind."After losing both parents while he was still in secondary school, Samuel had struggled through life alone. He worked countless jobs to pay for his education, graduating with honors in computer engineering. Despite his qualifications, jobs were scarce, and he now worked as a customer service officer in a small technology company. His salary barely covered rent, food, and transportation, but he remained grateful.Every morning before leaving home, Samuel knelt beside his bed."Lord," he prayed softly, "I don't know what You have planned for me today, but help me become a blessing to someone."Little did he know that this ordinary Tuesday would change his life forever.Across town, Anita Johnson stared at herself in the mirror. At twenty-five, Anita possessed natural beauty that made people turn their heads wherever she went. Her dark curly hair framed her bright brown eyes, but what made her truly beautiful was her heart. She lived with her widowed mother, Grace, who had sacrificed everything to raise her."Breakfast is ready!" her mother called."I'm coming!"Anita had recently been employed as a marketing executive for one of the city's largest companies. It was her first real job after university, and she couldn't wait to prove herself. Her mother smiled proudly."I prayed for this day."Anita hugged her tightly."I'll make you proud.""You already have."The roads were unusually busy that morning.Samuel boarded a crowded bus while Anita ordered a taxi.Neither knew their paths were about to cross.Halfway through Samuel's journey, heavy rain suddenly poured from the sky.People ran in every direction.Samuel jumped off the bus because traffic had come to a complete standstill."I'll just walk," he muttered. At the same moment, Anita's taxi broke down."What happened?" she asked."The engine has overheated," the driver replied.Frustrated, Anita paid him and stepped into the rain. She opened her umbrella and hurried toward the nearest bus stop. The pavement had become slippery.Without warning—She lost her balance.Everything happened so quickly. Her phone flew from her hand. Her handbag landed in a puddle. Before she could hit the ground...Someone caught her.Strong hands held her securely. When Anita opened her eyes...She saw Samuel. For a few seconds, the world around them disappeared."I'm so sorry," she whispered.Samuel smiled warmly."It's okay."Their eyes remained locked.Neither of them could explain the strange feeling that filled their hearts. It was as though they had known each other forever."You dropped these," Samuel said, picking up her phone and handbag."Thank you.""You should be more careful.""I know," she laughed nervously. The rain continued falling.Samuel noticed she was shivering.Without hesitation, he removed his jacket."You'll catch a cold.""Oh no, you'll get wet.""I'll survive."She hesitated before accepting it."Thank you... I'm Anita.""Samuel."The names felt strangely familiar to each other.Almost like destiny had whispered them years before. They waited together beneath a small bus shelter.Conversation came naturally."So where do you work?" Samuel asked."I start my first day today.""Congratulations.""What about you?""I work nearby.""You seem like someone who enjoys helping people."Samuel smiled."I just believe kindness costs nothing."Anita couldn't help smiling. Not many people thought that way anymore. Before long, the rain stopped.A bus arrived."This is mine," Samuel said."Oh."He climbed aboard before turning back."I hope your first day goes well.""Thank you."The bus pulled away.Anita watched until it disappeared. She didn't know why...But she hoped she'd see him again.Days passed.Neither Samuel nor Anita could stop thinking about the stranger they had met in the rain.Samuel caught himself smiling at work. His colleague noticed."You look unusually happy today.""Do I?""Who is she?"Samuel laughed."No one."But deep inside...He knew she wasn't "no one."One Saturday afternoon, fate intervened again.Samuel visited a bookstore to buy a second-hand programming book.Meanwhile, Anita entered the same bookstore looking for a novel. As Samuel reached for a book on the top shelf...Another hand reached for it too."I'm sorry," they both said at the same time. They looked up.Their eyes widened."You!""You!"For a moment, neither spoke.

They were meant to be
Chapter One: A Promise Written in the Stars The morning sun stretched across the quiet town of Adebayo Hills, painting the rooftops with shades of gold. It was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone, where children still chased one another through dusty streets, and where dreams often seemed too big for the people who lived there. Samuel Adeyemi stood outside his small family house, staring toward the distant city skyline. At twenty-three years old, he carried dreams much larger than the town that had raised him. His father had been a carpenter for over thirty years. Every day before sunrise, he would leave home with his worn-out toolbox, returning long after sunset with tired hands and aching feet. Samuel had watched him sacrifice everything so his children could have a better future. "One day," Samuel often whispered to himself, "I'll give my parents the life they deserve." Unlike many of his friends, Samuel believed hard work could change a person's destiny. He spent his evenings reading books, learning new skills online whenever he could afford internet access, and working odd jobs to save money for university. Although life wasn't easy, he refused to complain. His smile became known around town. Whenever someone needed help carrying groceries, fixing a bicycle, or tutoring a younger student, Samuel was always the first to volunteer. People admired his kindness. Little did they know that kindness would eventually lead him to the love of his life. Across town lived Anita Williams. Anita was twenty-one years old and had recently returned from the city after completing her diploma. She was intelligent, graceful, and possessed a smile capable of making even the saddest person forget their worries. Unlike Samuel, Anita came from a wealthy family. Her father owned several businesses and expected his daughter to eventually marry someone from a respected and influential family. Love, according to him, came second. Status came first. Anita disagreed. Ever since she was little, she believed true love wasn't measured by wealth but by character. Her mother often laughed whenever Anita shared her dreams. "You've watched too many romance movies," she would tease. Anita would simply smile. "Maybe," she'd reply. "But I know real love exists." One Saturday morning, Anita decided to volunteer at a local community library. Children crowded around the reading tables, excited to hear stories and learn new things. Unfortunately, one of the volunteers canceled at the last minute. The coordinator sighed. "What are we going to do now?" Just then, the library door opened. "I'm sorry I'm late," a calm voice said. Everyone turned. It was Samuel. "I heard you needed extra help." The coordinator smiled with relief. "You came at the perfect time." Samuel spent the next several hours helping children solve math problems, fixing broken bookshelves, and making everyone laugh with funny stories. Anita watched him from across the room. There was something different about him. He wasn't trying to impress anyone. Everything he did came naturally. When lunchtime arrived, Anita finally introduced herself. "Hi," she said. Samuel looked up from arranging books. "Hello." "I'm Anita." He smiled warmly. "I'm Samuel." For a brief moment, neither of them spoke. It wasn't awkward. It simply felt... peaceful. "So," Anita asked, "do you volunteer here often?" Samuel nodded. "When I have free time." "Why?" He shrugged. "Because someone once helped me when I needed it most." She tilted her head. "What happened?" Samuel hesitated before answering. "When I was twelve, my father lost his job. Things became difficult. A teacher secretly paid my school fees for almost two years." Anita's eyes widened. "You never found out who?" "I did." "Did you repay them?" Samuel smiled. "They refused the money." "So how did you thank them?" "They told me something I'll never forget." "What was it?" "'Don't pay me back. Help someone else instead.'" Anita felt something stir inside her heart. Most people she knew talked about success. Samuel talked about kindness. There was a difference. A big difference. Over the following weeks, they continued meeting at the library every Saturday. Sometimes they talked about books. Sometimes about music. Sometimes about their dreams. One afternoon they sat beneath a large mango tree outside the library. "If you could travel anywhere," Anita asked, "where would you go?" Samuel laughed. "Honestly?" "Yes." "I'd travel around Nigeria first." She looked surprised. "Really?" "There are beautiful places in our own country that I've never seen." "What about Paris?" "Maybe one day." "Dubai?" "Eventually." "London?" "If life allows." She smiled. "You're different." "So I've been told." "What about you?" Samuel asked. She looked toward the sky. "I want a life filled with peace." "No luxury?" "I already have enough." "No fame?" "It disappears." "No expensive cars?" "They get old." Samuel nodded. "So what do you really want?" She answered softly. "I want someone who chooses me every day." Samuel looked away. Something about those words settled deep inside his heart. Neither of them realized they were slowly falling in love. To everyone else, they looked like ordinary friends. But friendship has a strange way of becoming something much deeper. A shared laugh lasts a little longer. Conversations become more personal. Goodbyes become harder. And before anyone notices... The heart has already made its decision. One rainy afternoon, Samuel forgot his umbrella after leaving the library. The rain poured heavily. Anita ran after him. "Samuel!" He turned. She held out her umbrella. "You'll get soaked." "What about you?" "We'll share." For several minutes they walked silently beneath the same umbrella. Their shoulders occasionally brushed against each other. Neither moved away. Instead, both secretly hoped the walk would never end. Meanwhile, Anita's father had begun making plans. One evening during dinner he announced, "Next month we're hosting an important business dinner." Anita smiled politely. "Okay." "I want you to meet someone." "Who?" "The son of one of my closest business partners." She stopped eating. "I'm not interested." "You haven't even met him." "I don't want an arranged relationship." "It isn't arranged." "What is it then?" "An opportunity." "For you," Anita replied quietly. Her father frowned. "For this family." Anita excused herself and went upstairs. She stood by her bedroom window, staring into the night. For the first time in years... She felt trapped. Elsewhere, Samuel sat outside his house looking at the stars. His younger sister sat beside him. "You've been smiling a lot lately." He laughed. "Have I?" She grinned. "Who is she?" "There isn't anyone." She nudged his shoulder. "Liar." Samuel smiled but said nothing. Because deep down... He was beginning to realize something. Every Saturday had become the best day of his week. Not because of volunteering. Not because of the books. But because he got to see Anita. And without knowing it... She had become the most beautiful chapter of his life. Far above them, countless stars shimmered in the night sky. Some people say that every love story is written among the stars long before two people ever meet. Neither Samuel nor Anita knew what lay ahead. They could not foresee the storms that would test their hearts, the secrets that would threaten to separate them, or the sacrifices they would have to make. All they knew was that, somehow, every step they had taken in life had led them to that little library, to that first conversation, and to each other. Perhaps it was only coincidence. Or perhaps fate had already decided long ago what neither of them yet dared to believe. Perhaps... They were meant to be. — End of Chapter 1 —
