ISLA’S POV
I had moved into a studio apartment about an hour’s drive away from my firm. I wanted to go
but when I imagined my father's face I was happy I was here. My father was a former judge,
some ten years ago a scandal came out that involved his name. It tarnished not just his name but
also dried his account. He was not even an option.
It was evening already, I just closed my eyes hoping sleep would come. Two weeks had passed
since I left Grant, it was on the news that he engaged her, her name was Piper St James. Her
father was a real estate mogul. That was why Grant said she had something to offer.
“Uhm…that's not what the news says, it says you're toxic.”
That was the second person for today, I had started calling my old clients. They loved me right?
At least one person would agree, one person would give me their design to handle. But no,
nobody. I took three deep breaths and called again.
“So why did you leave your husband then?” The lady on the phone asked.
“We left each other ma’am.” I answered her. She was one of my biggest clients over the years I
hoped that if anyone understood, it would be her but she didn't. She only asked questions about
Grant and our divorce.
Grant really had won this time. I called eighteen clients and they all rejected saying that he was
right, or that I probably cheated on him.I had to leave. But to where? I began searching for cheap flights online. Anything that would
make me leave this place. While searching a news feed popped as a notification. “Monster or
Mentor” it was the Montgomery CEO, Kaeleen. I just ignored the post but then it came up again.
So I read, I kept on scrolling till my eyes hurt I had forgotten I was meant to look for a flight,
exhausted I wanted to rest up for a while.
“Come on babe, it's just water it wouldn't hurt.” Grant said, holding me by the waist and licking
my earlobe.
“Stop, it tickles” I said giggling.
He took my hat and ran so I could chase him, we ran till we fell on the sand.
“I love you babe.” I said looking into his eyes.
“I love you more than the fireworks on the fourth of July.”
“That's so sweet.” I said.
He got up and said he was going to get us a drink, and splashed water on my face before he left. I
watched him as he walked away, this man was so fine. I just wore my sunglasses, lay under the
sun and was sunbathing.
He came back this time, and splashed water on my face again.
“Stop babe.” I said. Except he wasn't laughing not playing, he poured the water on my face
again, this time with a bucket that I was sure wasn't there initially. He turned back to leave and a
lady came and he scooped her from the ground. Everywhere became dark.
I blinked my eyes open. There was no Grant, no beach, just me and my leaking ceiling. From my
small rest, I had fallen asleep.
“You now haunt me in my sleep. Way to go guys.” I said coming down from my bed, strolling to
my work table, asides my clothes and other necessities, my work table was very essential and
that was why I carried it.
“Grr grr” my phone buzzed. I had missed three calls from Nora. Nora was one of my clients back
in the day, she also helped me move things around with Grant to get his job and she was also the
executive assistant to Kaelen. What did she want now? I rolled my eyes and tried to call her back but it went straight to
voicemail.
“That's it, the universe doesn't want me to talk, so beautiful.” I said in a sarcastic tone
As I got back on the bed, to continue sulking before I slept, she called back.
“Whuch do you want? A storytime, a picture of my ex husband, or you just want to mock me
coated with pity.” I was getting tired of all of them.
“Hi Isla, I'm sorry about your divorce, I have a proposal for y-” she said halfway before I cut her
short.
“Nope, nope, I'm not dating anybody you have for me.”
“What, no! I recommended you to Kaeleen Montgomery and he liked you work, that he had seen
a portfolio years back, you have an interview tomorrow by nine in the morning, he doesn't play
with punctuality. All you have to do, is slay.” She said hanging up before I could reply.
What? A job? Was she tripping? Someone finally wanted to work with me even after Grant's
threat? “In your face Grant.” I scoffed.
What if this was a scheme? For Grant to publicly disgrace me? Although I had nothing to be
afraid of, the feeling still lurked.
I couldn't sleep, I rolled from side to side on the bed, hoping and praying for the best. “Monster
or Mentor” the words flashed in my mind again. Well there was only one way to find out. I tried
to use my imaginations as a safe place for me to fall asleep but Grant and his girlfriend kept
showing up, the thought of them together made me barf.
“Phew!” It was morning already. The weekend passed quickly because I was pumped for this
job. Today was the big day, even though Nora said slay all I had to do was make a good
impression.
I brought out my skirt and suit I had bought yesterday and packed my hair in ponytail style. I
entered a cab and prayed for luck.
When I arrived, all I did was gasp.
“Montgomery.” I said under my breath.
